Dual Parallel! Trouble Adventures / Plot (No Spoilers)

Imagine walking to school and seeing two giant robots going at it in the streets. When you react to it, people treat you like you’re crazy and no one believes you. If that happened enough times, you’d do exactly what Yotsuga Kazuki does and learn to ignore it. At least that is until his beautiful classmate Sanada Mitsuki’s mad scientist father sends him to a parallel universe. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, everything Kazuki has been seeing was real but in this parallel universe.

Dual Parallel! Trouble Adventures is a mecha comedy from the creator of Tenchi Muyo! and captures a very similar feel but in a world revolving around mecha warfare. Humanity is divided by the malicious RaRa group who seek to claim world domination with their superior mech creations. However, now that Kazuki is on the other side, he has showcased tremendous aptitude as a pilot. Together, not only is Kazuki hoping to win the war but also return home.

Everything Old Is New Again

Kazuki has to let go of his old world as things on the other side are drastically different. Professor Sanada Ken is there, but in this world, he has no daughter and therefore little attachment to Kazuki outside of getting him to pilot for the military. Obviously, giant robots do not come from the original Earth, but something special happened to Kazuki, allowing him to perfectly adapt to his new situation. Dual is a tried and true mecha anime, but it holds enough unique traits to keep things fresh.

Here’s Something for the Harem Fans

It wouldn’t be a Kajishima Masaki anime without a little bit of harem. As the creator of Tenchi Muyo! his works have a very similar feel to each other, but personally, we find his spin-offs like Dual to be a little more entertaining. Masaki quickly gains attention for being a mecha pilot, and along with that comes quite a bit of female attention. For the most part, Kazuki is a likable MC, although in typical harem fashion, he’s average in every way. All in all, it’s a mix you don’t see very often in mecha anime.

Ties into Tenchi Muyo!

War on Geminar, GXP, and Dual all tie in with the mainline Tenchi Muyo! series in different ways. All three bear a mecha element at some point of the series, have pervasive harem elements, and feature a quirky but loveable MC. Aside from that, Light Hawk Wings also make an appearance at key points in these shows, not to make too much of a spoiler, but it’s honestly to be expected.

Keeps You Wanting More

We loved Dual, but unfortunately, it was over as soon as it started. At 13 episodes and a bonus OVA, it just felt like it could have gone on forever. It did have a rather conclusive ending while keeping the door open for more, like everything Tenchi, but that’s all she wrote. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as it was good enough not to overstay its welcome, but we would have loved a full 26 episodes with this one.

Final Thoughts

Dual Parallel! Trouble Adventures is a classic in our books. It’s fun, interesting and has a good spin on the mecha genre enough to keep us watching. We loved remembering details about this one for our Anime Rewind and hope you check it out. Have any memories from this one or your own opinions? Let us know in the comments!
