With the Fall season coming to a close, we'll be counting down five of the best drama anime of the Autumn months! Whether you are interested in character studies, developing romances, or battle royale betrayals, there is certainly an anime in the Fall lineup to satisfy your tastes!
5. Sankaku Mado no Sotogawa wa Yoru (The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window)
Kousuke Mikado has always been able to see spirits but, due to his overwhelming fear of them, attempts to suppress his powers by wearing glasses. After meeting a medium by the name of Rihito Hiyakawa, she reveals that the two were destined to meet. After interacting, Rihito promises that she can cure all of Mikado's worries as long as she is allowed to stay by his side. Now, teaming up to tackle a world of paranormal curses, Kousuke and Mikado how they are connected and track down the mysterious owner of the name Erika Hiura.
As Kousuke and Mikado work more cases, tracking down clues in order to uncover more about their relationship, we see not only a growth in Kousuke as he comes to face his fears but a painful insight into the manifestation of these curses. The two must learn about those they meet along their travels and it is all the more disheartening should the said person succumb to their curse. The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window is a tense mystery drama that should not be overlooked.
4. Taishou Otome Otogibanashi (Taishou Otome Fairytale)
Tamahiko Shima lives in Chiba by himself in the very peak of the mountains. He exiled himself to such a location after losing motor functionality in his right hand in the same accident that killed his mother. His family has all but disowned him and so Tamahiko spends his days in a terrible depression, trying his best not to bring any further dishonor unto his family name. However, after answering a late-night knock on the door, Tamahiko meets fourteen-year-old Yuzuki Tachibana. The girl claims that she has come to be his future wife and has been sent by Tamahiko's father.
Taishou Otome Otogibanashi is a well-executed character study into the minds of those with depression or anxiety. We learn so much about Tamahiko from his daily life and feel sympathy that he has simply resigned himself to suffer until death. However, the message this anime truly wants to preach is one of redemption. Tamahiko struggles to resist Yuzuki's dedication and thoughtfulness towards him and can progressively feel a regaining of his sense of self. All it takes is the right person to lift you out of despair and, thankfully, Tamahiko has found that special someone.
3. Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu (Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut)
After successfully sending a dog into space, the space race is on between the countries of this fantasy world. However, due to a dog's genetic makeup being so different from that of a human's, one country decides that it would be too risky to send a human to space untested and commissions a vampire to do so instead. We say "commissioned" but Irina Luminesk was more so taken forcibly from her home. Luckily, she is up to the task and is eager to enter into space. Accompanied by a top candidate to be the first human cosmonaut (Lev Leps), Irina begins preparations for her trip into space!
There is a lot of interesting elements to unpack in this anime. We firstly get to see an alternate history in which different countries try their best to beat the world into the cosmos. There is a lot of political unrest as worries mount that they may be beaten to the punch. However, for a show about traveling into the farthest reaches of the Universe, there is a lot of personal relationship drama to cover as well. Both Irina and Lev bond over the course of the show and their mutual love of space only ever brings them closer together. Definitely be sure to check out this drama!
2. Platinum End
After attempting to take his own life, adolescent Mirai is saved by a guardian angel, who proceeds to offer the overwhelmed teen a second chance. The said angel recruits Mirai to participate in a Battle Royale against 12 other candidates for a chance at becoming the new god. With 999 days to not only survive but ensure his competition is promptly taken out, Mirai must use his newfound supernatural powers to rise to the top!
Battle Royale? Becoming God? 12 contestants? Yes, you're not going crazy, this is the exact same premise as the ever-popular Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) series (even down to the number of players)! Well, we're here to say; if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Everything we loved about Future Diary is back in full force with Platinum End with an even greater supernatural twist to the story. Unlike Future Diary, our characters have access to a wide assortment of powers instead of having to rely on their unique diaries. Drama and suspense will unfold as untrustworthy allegiances are made and backs are stabbed all in an effort to remain the last person standing.
1. Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu Part 2 (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Part 2)
Jobless Reincarnation has gained a lot of traction since its controversial first series rolled out, with some praising its interesting and thought-provoking narrative while others writing off some of its more sensitive subject matter. Regardless of your stance on the anime, one thing is for certain; Mushoku Tensei is definitely an entertaining ride! This sequel picks up directly after the first season, as we see Rudeus transported to the Demon Continent. After teaming up with some of the locals, Rudeus must fight tooth and nail to return back home to Fittoa.
Series two of Jobless Reincarnation brings more of what you know and love from the original series along with a newly developing storyline. Rudeus is such a unique character and wherever he goes, drama is sure to follow. Wanting to break away from his traumatic past, Rudeus strives to find love and build relationships with people—something he was unable to do in his previous life. Jobless Reincarnation is certainly an anime to watch out for and, considering it has already received a sequel, there is most definitely more to come!
