Synopsis

Numerous books have been written by literary masters. The unique worlds and emotional stories that have been depicted in them, fascinated people's hearts and minds, and enriched the world. However, strange enemies appear to corrode those books.
They are called "Taints", born out of negative feelings about literature.
Only the literary masters who reincarnated with the power of the "Alchemist" can fight back against the Taints, who aim to invade the books and erase them from this world.
The literary masters delve into the corroded book to save it and defeat the Taints.
This needs to be done to protect the literature of this world.
This is a new story of literary masters written by those who have put their souls into creating their works.

Characters & Voice Actors

Ryunosuke Akutagawa: Junichi Suwabe

His representative works are "Spinning Gears", "Hell Screen", and "Rashomon". He looks detached and has a cool face, but he's actually a bit of an air-head. He has elegant and beautiful manners, which shows he has a good background, but because of this, he gives the impression of somebody who's hard to approach. Because of his personality and charisma, he tends to attract troublesome people.
Osamu Dazai: Yuichi Nakamura

His representative works are "Run, Melos!", "The Setting Sun", and "No Longer Human". A cheerful mood-maker whose true feelings border on narcissism. He's conscious of making sure that even parts of him that aren't visible stay stylish. He shows a profound respect for Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, which is the reason why he calls him "Akutagawa Sensei".
Tetsuya Kakihara: Chuya Nakahara

His representative works are "Poems of the Goat", "Songs of Bygone Days", and "Soiled Sorrow". A violent drunk who looks underage with his short stature. Despite his rough personality, when he recites a poem, he shows his surprisingly great sensitivity. He is often unilaterally involved with Dazai Osamu and is feared by him.
Touson Shimazaki: Shinnosuke Tachibana

His representative works are "The Broken Commandment", "New Life", and "Before the Dawn". He becomes insatiable if he doesn't get to the bottom of things. He also draws a lot of attention because of his frequent tendency to talk to people around him, pretending to be an "interview". He is particularly interested in the past of Akutagawa Ryuunosuke and observes him on a regular basis.
Sakunosuke Oda: Masaya Onosaka

His representative works are "Meoto Zenzai" and "The Paradox of Youth". He is a cheerful young man who was born and raised in Osaka. Grouped with Dazai Osamu and Sakaguchi Ango, the trio is self-proclaimed the "Buraiha"(Decadent School). He likes the unusual curry mixed with rice and roux, with a raw egg at the top.

An evil force trying to corrupt famous stories, huh? Well, even though this anime is based on a mobile game, the premise looks interesting enough.

Three Episode Impressions

By using bishounen to represent famous Japanese authors, Bungou to Alchemist is yet another anime that tries to make classic literature more accessible to us. Just like Bungo Stray Dogs or Aoi Bungaku, it adapts renowned short tales but with a twist: in this case, the evil Taints are trying to destroy these works and its authors, so the authors themselves (their souls, actually) have to fight them back to keep the story as is without dying in the process.

Starting with 'Run, Melos!' and 'In The Forest, Under Cherries In Full Bloom' proved to be a good decision; the first episode is about the most famous Japanese author, Osamu Dazai, while the other 2 episodes show us an interesting horror story, and horror is always a good choice when you want to get people's attention. That being said, if you know nothing about Japanese literature and these particular authors, you'll be missing a lot of references and inside jokes... like all interactions in episode 2.
