Celebrate Mario’s 35th Anniversary With These Themed Japanese Conbini Snacks!

Can you believe that Mario is celebrating his 35th Anniversary?! We don’t know about you but that makes some of us feel quite old. Of course, that doesn’t stop us from wanting to party hard with our favourite plumber and his friends, and Japan is taking the celebration very seriously! We are sure that more great collaborations and special events will be coming throughout 2021, but the party has officially kicked off at 7-11s across Japan. And what better way to start the party than with snacks?

That’s right, 7-11 Japan has released several special snacks to celebrate the Mario 35th Anniversary in style! With both savoury and sweet choices, and the Mario theme song regularly playing in the store, 7-11 is celebrating right. Let’s have a look at the different foods available!

Mario Mix Roll

If we are going to look at special foods for Mario’s 35th Anniversary, we had better start with the star of the show himself! The snack inspired by Mario is a savoury bread stuffed with many fillings. It’s a unique Japanese sandwich filled with spaghetti (stay with us here), tomato sauce, mushrooms, and egg salad. That might sound like a random assortment of foods but noodle-filled sandwiches are extremely popular for a quick meal in Japan, especially on the go. The Mario Mix Roll is sure to keep you from going hungry for a long time with all those carbs and protein - and it’s unlikely Mario ever worried about his figure, so why should you?

Bowser Spicy Chicken Roll

Of course we can’t have Mario without his arch-nemesis, Bowser. Bowser’s fried chicken roll is bringing the heat quite literally! It’s a fried chicken sandwich topped with chilli sauce. It even comes with a warning for children and people who aren’t used to eating spicy food, warning potential diners to beware that the sauce contains real chillies and black pepper. A spicy snack with a warning label is exactly what Bowser deserves - the question is if you are brave enough to face it!

Super Star Pineapple Agar

One of the Mario 35th Anniversary desserts available is agar, a kind of thick jelly that is popularly used for Japanese desserts. This treat is shaped like the famous Mario Super Star that grants players amazing powers throughout the Mario series - maybe eating this dessert will do the same in real life! We certainly have our fingers crossed. The Super Star Pineapple Agar has a jelly base with pineapple sauce on top for a dessert that delivers both sweet and sour to your taste buds (and hopefully a power-up, too!).

Princess Peach Dolce

The second dessert in the Mario 35th Anniversary line-up is Princess Peach Dolce. This dessert also advertises itself as being a sweet and sour treat. It’s a combination of strawberry “rare” cheesecake (Japan’s name for unbaked cheesecake) and strawberry jelly, served in a parfait-style cup. And of course, since it’s Princess Peach’s dessert, it’s all pink! The top of the dolce has yellow whipped cream in the shapes of stars for an added cute touch. The cheesecake layer is on top of the jelly base, so you can eat this dolce as-is like a true princess or mix it up for a party in your mouth.

Yoshi Melonpan

Next up is the final dessert in the Mario 35th Anniversary snacks collection - Yoshi Melonpan. If you don’t know melonpan, it’s a popular sweet bread in Japan made of a soft, sweet roll topped by a layer akin to a cookie. Sometimes melonpan also has cream inside, which is exactly what Yoshi’s Melonpan has! Despite the name, melonpan is not always melon flavoured (it’s named because of its shape) but this time the name says it all. The Yoshi Melonpan is filled with melon cream and whipped cream. And of course, since it’s made in Yoshi’s image, it’s all green! There’s even icing cross-hatched on the top for a little extra sweetness if the filling wasn’t enough to satisfy you.
