Discussion Time
I Cannot Reach You is all about two childhood friends, Kakeru and Yamato. Yamato is the typical top of everything. He’s good at sports, smart, handsome, and attracts the attention of many. Perhaps the only peculiar thing about him is that he’s quite shy, which often translates to him being misunderstood by many. Kakeru, on the other hand, is Yamato’s complete opposite. According to him, he doesn’t have anything he’s good at. He doesn’t even have distinct features and isn’t also good at studying. He’s basically the average human. The thing is Yamato likes Kakeru, but he sucks at expressing it. Thus, we get to see their adorable interaction.
1. Adorable Yamato-kun
At first glance, I Cannot Reach You seems like your run-of-the-mill BL. However, Yamato single-handedly erases that. His characterization, to say the least, is unique. He has all that it takes to be an alpha or a lone wolf, but instead of going that way, we get the adorable, shy puppy that he is. His actions and intentions are just pure cuteness, and even the way his acts of kindness get misunderstood hits a spot in our hearts. We don’t want to seem like we’re having favorites here, but you get what we mean.
2. I Cannot Reach You Indeed
The first thing that caught our attention is the series’ title. We are even initially reluctant to give it a go, since it feels kind of tragic. When we did start it, it did justify its justice. Well, in a good way. Unlike the kind of tragedy we’re expecting, the title more likely pertains to how the characters’ feelings don’t reach each other. Both Kakeru and Yamato have a hard time grasping each other’s thoughts, which often result in a lot of misunderstanding. Things always end well, though, so we’re not really complaining or anything.
1. Not That Gratifying Yet
Don’t get us wrong. We really like the series. It’s just that the volume doesn’t give that much gratification just yet. Worse, is that it ends in the worst cliffhanger known in the history of cliffhangers. The volume focuses more on the initial stages of Kakeru and Yamato’s romantic tug of war. That means the series is still making us invest in their characters during the first volume, which in turn results in a lot less gratifying scenes.
Final Thoughts
To put it simply, I Cannot Reach You is an interesting BL series partly due to Yamato’s characterization. Even though it’s BL, the first volume is quite mellow in terms of showing the readers' lovey-dovey scenes between the two leads. Worse is that it abruptly ends when things have only started to get interesting. If you feel what we’re feeling, then join us as we demand the next volume as soon as possible.
