Doki Doki Literature Club is a game from 2017, and you probably have heard of it. As the title shows, it's a visual novel about a faceless guy joining a school club for book lovers, where he meets s group of young girls. However, not everything is as it seems in this cult classic...
A few weeks ago, an improved version called Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! debuted not only on PC but on consoles as well. Time to review it, ladies and gentlemen!
Welcome to the Club
Without a clue of what school club to join, the protagonist of the story joins the literature club. Along with his childhood friend Sayori, our guy will spend several days with a cast of archetypical anime girls, like the tsundere Natsuki or the enigmatic Yuri, as well as the club's president Monika.
Doki Doki Literature Club starts like any other dating sim, with some minigames and several scenes with your potential candidates (it's worth noting only Yuri, Natsuki and Yuri are romanceable). However, DDLC it's more than just a silly dating visual novel; it's one of the best psychological horror games out there!
A F2P Game Asking for Money Now?
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is nothing but a re-release of a PC cult classic, now available on consoles. However, what once was a free game now costs 15 dollars, so there has to be something "valuable" and new in it, right? Well, of course! Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! comes with 6 new side stories to explore, new full HD visuals and unlockable images, and lots of new songs that really enhance the OST. Is it worth $15 though? Well, if you're a fan of the first game playing on PC, consider this a way of thanking the devs—if you're a console gamer or this is the first time you hear about DDLC, then $15 sounds like a fair price for a game that's sure to play with your mind and now features better graphics.
If You Are New to DDLC, This Is What You Were Waiting for!
A regular playthrough will take you around 5 hours to complete, but playing it time and time again is highly encouraged since you might get alternative endings. Also, replaying it will give all dialogues and background details a new perspective! The extra content will double the original game's content in terms of gaming hours.
The main story is now considered a meta-game you can run as a desktop application in the Windows-like Metaverse Enterprise Solutions menu. Regardless, you can also launch any side story once you unlock them by playing a mini-game about writing each of the girls a couple of poems. After playing all 6 side stories, a seventh one becomes available.
Note that we're being vague about what the main story or these side stories are about. No, we're not lazy! We're just trying to avoid any kind of spoiler that could ruin your experience, as this is one of those games you want to play blindly. Just be warned that, as we mentioned before, this is not a generic dating sim about girls being cute to you; it's a horror game that will ruin the minds of many of you!
