[Anime Culture Monday] Anime Recipes! Fried Cod & Tartar Sauce (Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara)

Food is king. This is not news. Food is not only, of course, what powers our bodies, but also what makes us happy and accommodating and not wanting to kill everyone in a hungry rage. No? Just us? Oh ok…. Welcome to eat like your anime faves! This week, we are consulting the almighty god of cooking aka Shokugeki no Souma for how to make delicious food! It seems like every week with season two aka Ni no Sara, that we are getting more and more delicious foods. Maybe this week should just be called “Shokugeki no Souma recipes”. Let’s not keep you waiting anymore and get right into it!

1. Fried Cod from Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara

Episode one of the new season pulled no punches with Shokugeki no Souma. We are just lambasted with different foods and all of them look divine! The bentou that presented in the first episode was enough to drive the judges nuts and apparently make them dance as if they were small European children. While we cannot promise that is what will happen to those who eat your cooking, unless you did something on the other side of the law, anyone and everyone can enjoy this one. Souma’s recipe was certainly complicated and only those who have received professional training probably are the only ones who can do it. That being said, we are sure you will find this adaptation much more feasible. Even those who are not big fans of fish should absolutely check this out! You never know, you may be able to conquer your distaste of them here.


Delicious. Utterly delicious.

What you will need: (Note: Serves 1-2 people.)

cod fillets

Cooking Sake/wine (ask an adult if you are underage)
~ 1 tsp

1/2 tsp

Panko crumbs
As much as needed (see optional notes for a twist!)


1 tbsp

1 & 1/2tbsp

Shredded/powdered cheese
A small amount to give it a slight flavor

for frying

to season

Optional Notes:

A common variation, as strange as it may sound, is to crush crackers to a pulp and use them in lieu of panko. Panko is the more traditional route while crackers would be a more modern effect.


How to Cook It:

    Wash the cod fillets and then try them well. Then, place them in a bowl and sprinkle the salt over them. Once this is done, pour the cooking sake/wine over them and let them sit for 15 minutes.

    While you are waiting, if you are going the cracker route, pulverize those bad boys now. A rough estimate is that for two small fillets, 13 crackers should be about enough. Set aside the panko or crackers in a bowl.

    After they have sat for 15 minutes, take the fillets and rinse them lightly. Then use paper towels to get rid of ALL MOISTURE.
  4. 4

    Start to heat up your oil in a frying pan, you only need enough for frying. This is not deep fry, but pan frying.

    Next, add in your pepper and powdered/shredded cheese. Mix well in a bowl.

    Once you have done this, add in your flour. Then beat the egg in a separate bowl.

    Dip the cod in the egg, then the panko/crackers. Do it once again.

    Put it CAREFULLY into the oil and cook it on middle heat gently moving them and flipping them every couple of minutes.

    Once they are all fried and done, melt your butter and then gently coat the drying cod fillets while they cool.

(Note: Be careful. This recipe calls for both raw fish and eggs. Clean as you go using hot water and soap at the very least. )



2. Tartar Sauce from Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara

You knew this was coming right? The judges not only flipped out in that first episode about the rice and soup, but they also loved the cod and the tartar sauce that came on top of it! You can put it any way you like, but tartar sauce, as strange of a name as it is, it is delicious. A good tartar sauce is creamy, slightly tangy, only slightly sticks to the food, and will probably take a few years off of your arteries. If it’s too watery, it’s not good, and it should not be entirely solid either. It goes extremely well with fish dishes, and ketchup does not. That’s like the people who put ketchup on steak; don’t trust ‘em! You can trust this recipe, though! Let’s go!

What you will need:( Serves as many people as you want it to. Seriously… 8 tablespoons of mayonnaise should not be consumed in one sitting.)

Hardboiled Eggs

Onion, Diced/Minced

Lemon Juice
1 tablespoon

8 tablespoons

Salt and pepper
to season

How to Cook It:

    The fun begins here. Boil your two eggs.
  2. 2

    While they are cooking, mince your onion. Then put it in the microwave for about one minute and steam it. Take it out after and let it cool. (The trick here is to cover it with plastic wrap).

    Once the eggs have boiled, dice the yolks while mincing the whites and put them into a bowl.
  4. 4

    Add in your now cooled down onion as well as the salt and pepper and mix together.
  5. 5

    Add in the Mayonnaise, lemon juice, and parsley and mix well!
  6. 6

    It is technically done once you have done this step, but it tastes better after about 30 minutes to an hour in the fridge.

(Note: You have to boil the eggs carefully so be sure to do it safely and not get burned by the steam or hot water. )

If you did everything right, it should come out looking something like this!

And there you have it! Here is another week and like we promised, delicious food all around. This time too, we finally and talk about and enjoy the deliciousness that is food from Shokugeki no Souma!
