What You Need to Know:
- In the world of gaming, two major mascots reigned supreme in the 90's, Nintendo's Mario and Sega's own Sonic the Hedgehog. Both of these mascots went at it in what was known as the Nintendo vs Sega era, where much of the marketing strategy was "Sega does what Nintendon't", and really helped Sega to cement themselves as a worthy rival during that time.
- Sonic took the stage and was really the more appealing of the two because for one he represented a much younger and cooler design, which helped to market Sega as more of the hip and cool brand for the young demographic. Over the years Sonic became more than just a mascot and eventually he became a household name, generating a lot of titles such as Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for thr Dreamcast, then branching off into other avenues with kart-racing spin-offs. At one time in the 90's, Sonic had his own animated TV show which we still remember quite vividly to this day!
- Sonic and Mario continued their rivalry for what felt like decades up until recently where that iconic rivalry became more of a team-based effort, in order to bring the gaming community together. Sonic still continues to shine in many ways, most notably the recent live action Sonic movie that released in theaters.
