Oooooo is this going to be like Ben-to with the main character's obsession with gaming or Himouto! Umaru-chan?

Not entirely. This is an homage to old games that used to exist in arcades! It just happens to have those characteristics you mentioned. However, fans will enjoy it for sure.

There is romance too which means that this could end up being a very heartwarming anime with tons of nostalgia. I'm excited.

I am so on board for anything with games. I am not sure about the 3DCG art, but it moves smoothly it appears, so I think I'll be okay.

Synopsis

The high score girl is my journey to meet a girl better than myself at games.

‘What’s a polygon? Can you eat it?’ The arrival of the heyday of good old-fashioned 2D games was 1991.

In a corner of an arcade rampant with salarymen, delinquents, and otaku, she sat there quietly and coolly. This 90’s arcade romcom is told through the eyes of the main character, Haruo!

Three Episode Impression

This was a thing that we watched. Umm… it felt more like we watched a short movie than three episodes which leaves us oddly fulfilled? High score girl is about a girl who basically acts mute around everything and everyone and everyone loves her for it. She’s great at sports, grades, and even art, while Haruto is bad at everything but games. She aka Akira, has one thing she is really good at that she wants to do constantly: Games. So Akira goes to arcades and just happens to keep running into Haruto and they play games. A cute friendship develops, and they begin spending time together going to different arcades and homes, and playing games. The third episode is a twist to end all twists and we will not spoiler you.

The series is more or less an homage to everything classic games. It’s very old and it knows it. We hear about consoles that existed around the time that classic sega consoles and the NES existed. It’s pretty cool, but unless you know about retro games, you are going to be lost fast. The story is overall cute, but… how do we say it? It’s not really anything that will draw you in. Rather, what may keep your attention is Haruto’s countless expositions about old games and consoles and the fact that this is very well-done 3DCG art. At this point, we may watch another episode, but it really depends on what else we watch. If we are dropping shows left and right, maybe this is one to keep. If we are not, we may find ourselves struggling to keep up with High Score Girl.
