PassCode continues to redefine the boundaries of music, blending high-energy electronic sounds with heavy metal intensity and explosive vocals. Originally rooted in a more traditional idol style, the group has evolved into a genre-defying act, incorporating a wide range of influences while maintaining their signature edge.

With their latest track, “Liberator,” PassCode taps into a darker, more emotional direction inspired by the anime Roll Over and Die. And as they head into their 10th anniversary in 2026, the group shows no signs of slowing down. Dive into our interview with PassCode below!

Interview with PassCode

Thank you for speaking with us once again! But for those who are just discovering PassCode, could you tell us a bit about the group—how it started and what kind of music you create?

At the very beginning, our sound was what you’d typically expect from an idol group. Around that time, more idols were starting to incorporate metal and screams, and our music gradually shifted into the style we have now. While our sound is rooted in metal, we also incorporate a lot of different elements. Emily Arima’s screams are especially distinctive.

For your latest song “Liberator”, during the songwriting process, was there a particular mood, theme, or message you wanted to convey?

I hope the song can convey things like striving to become stronger to protect something important, and being reminded of the true value of the connections between people.

What’s the story or meaning behind the title “Liberator”? How did you decide on it?

I felt that SHY’s desire to bring happiness to others, despite all her struggles, is very similar to PassCode. The message we convey isn’t all that different, which is why this song reflects both SHY’s perspective and PassCode’s essence.

This song depicts the life of the anime’s protagonist, Flum, and the lyrics ask the listener, “To protect the people who matter to you, can you overcome your weaknesses, defy fate, and shape the future?” The title Liberator isn’t just about someone who saves others, it also represents someone who frees them from their constraints and even rewrites destiny.

How did the story or themes of the anime “Roll Over and Die” influence the way you approached “Liberator”?

We thought some people might skip the anime’s opening, so we decided to structure the song to start with the vocals right away.

Since there are so many monsters, I think the song ended up with screams that sound like growls, giving it a serious, intense atmosphere.

And if you could spend one day in the world of Roll Over and Die, which character would you want to be, and why?

Cyrill. I’d want to be Cyrill and clear up Flum’s misunderstandings.

I’d want to be Flum so I could watch the cute Milkit up close and have her all to myself.

I’d want to be Sara. Her heart is pure, she’s innocent, and above all, she’s adorable, so I’d like to be her and help a lot of people.

Flum! Strong, cool girls are the best.

What are your goals for 2026, and do you have any messages for your fans?

I want to do lots of things that will get our fans excited. And someday, I’ll go see everyone again.

Thank you always for your support. 2026 is our 10th anniversary year, so I want to make it an even more exciting year!

In 2026, I want to visit places I’ve never been before, both in Japan and abroad, whether for live shows or privately. Thank you for always supporting us, and please look forward to what’s coming next from PassCode!

Releasing lots of cool songs! We’ll continue evolving and come see everyone again.

We've been really enjoying Roll Over and Die, and PassCode’s opening theme is definitely one of the highlights!

After this interview, it’s clear just how much the group continues to grow and evolve, and it’s exciting to see where these talented artists are headed after a decade-long journey. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’ll be going back to blasting “Liberator” at full volume...
