RomCom anime has been growing as a genre over the last few years, and the first series of Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro is a good example of that released in the Spring 2021 anime season doing so well as to see a second season released this Winter. Adapting the manga of the same name, authored by 774 or Nanashi, the story follows Nagatoro and her interactions with her Senpai, Naoto Hachiouji, in his art club.
The second season of Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro is a classic example of if you like the first season then you will love the second. The relationship between Nagatoro and Senpai is the focus of the anime and their foray into romance is endearing to watch in this new season.
More of the Same is Great
The biggest draw for this anime is the relationship between Senpai and Nagatoro, and in season two of Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro gives more of this than the first, feeding fans with what they want. Their dynamic is perfect throughout the season, seeing outings to the zoo and training together for a school judo tournament, with Senpai’s awkwardness being put on a show as he confronts a couple making fun of Nagatoro’s drawing at the zoo, and Nagatoro illustrating how cool she can be by stepping in helping calm things down.
Their banter is unparalleled with Nagatoro teasing Senpai in the art club room constantly, as the two grow closer through the series they finally get to go on a date in the last episode, showing some romantic progress that is often ignored in a RomCom anime.
The More the Merrier
Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro season two has quite a few side characters returning from the first series, like Nagatoro’s friends Gamou and Yoshi, as well as Senpai’s president from the art club, but many more have been added. A good example is the president’s younger sister, Hana Sunomiya joins the art club giving Nagatoro the first sense of a love rival for Senpai’s attention.
Another is Nagatoro’s judo rival, Orihara who has been competing nationally in tournaments and the two take each other on in the school athletics competition. We also get introduced to Nagatoro’s older sister, Misaki, when Senpai visits their house for the first time after she catches a cold. These new characters help keep the story feel fresh with some new takes on teasing Senpai, like Misaki joking that Nagatoro should get a perishable Christmas gift like food if it is for someone that is not important or something they would regularly use if it is someone important to her, like Senpai.
Final Thoughts
Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro 2nd Attack has given us more between our favourite couple, with new levels of teasing, some new outings together, and finally a proper date between the two that brought romance back into focus for this sweet RomCom. The slew of new characters has helped refresh the story, giving us new dynamics but keeping the focus primarily on Senpai’s torture at Nagatoro’s hands. What did you think of the new season?
