How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Omega quickly establishes to the audience that this isn’t going to be a new type of series despite now being done by a different animation studio. Just like season 1, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Omega is set on delivering magical action, plenty of comedic moments, and tons—and we mean tons—of ecchi content. In many ways, this format is refreshing as many harem anime try to change the formula when doing a second season—like Date A Live or Nisekoi—by increasing the romance or focusing more on drama. Omega is more ecchi, more oppai, and more of the same elements we saw in the original season. Does this retread work? Well, that, we will talk about in a few moments.

This new season of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord did a pleasant job of balancing old content and new. Rather than change the group dynamic by adding in the new priestess Lumachina and having Diablo now struggle between three waifu instead of two—he’s truly a lucky demon lord—Omega relies on prioritizing Rem and Shera’s relationship to our main man. Both leading ladies have fallen further in love with Diablo and continue to make him swoon—and us lose more blood from our noses—with oppai body-rubbing sessions and various moments of ecchi that was seen in the first season. These old tricks would have eventually made us dislike Omega, but the addition of a few new characters helped the harem elements grow without feeling forced. Yes, it’s a lot of the same old ecchi/harem we saw in How Not to Summon a Demon Lord season 1 but Omega knows what the audience wants and does an adequate job of delivering.

What kills How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω overall isn’t the lack of episodes—there are only 10 this season—or the repeated ecchi but the new adventure that just feels formulaic. Diablo’s biggest new enemy in Omega is Vishos and he ends up really just being a character we’ve seen before in other isekai-themed anime. Vishos has a God-complex and ends up becoming the main final threat to Diablo but our overpowered demon lord fells him like a hastily made tower of cards. In many ways, Omega falters because Diablo still is incredibly OP and thus makes his various journies through the new dungeon and his perils against new enemies seem…kind of pitiful. All in all, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω ends up being a boring new adventure and rarely gives any thrills that the first season did so well.

Many harem anime, especially when they introduce new girls, begin to form large love triangles/rectangles that make for some comedic ecchi moments. Omega—as we noted earlier—makes sure to really only focus on the two returning ladies Rem and Shera. Fanis Laminitus—a woman who becomes infatuated with Diablo—tries for his attention and so does our priestess Lumachina—which provides some A+ ecchi scenes—but they all play second fiddle to the original duo of girls. We apologize to fans of the girls introduced in Omega but they clearly won’t win Diablo like Rem and Shera have.

Our biggest gripe of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω isn’t the lackluster adventure, the repeated comedy/ecchi or even the fact that Diablo still has no enemy as strong as him. No, what we think Omega fails at most is being relevant as a second season. Ultimately, when Omega ends we are left wondering…what was the point of any of this? Did Diablo become stronger? Did Diablo find a way home? Did this second season establish a new greater threat waiting in the distance? All of those questions share "no" for an answer and that makes season 2 of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord just feel pointless. This season could have been an OVA and that—to us at least—would have made more sense.
