Honey’s Highlights

I love Jigoku Shoujo's saying 'We will take revenge on your behalf.' It's so creepy and yet so cool. There really is no anime like it!

I agree. Then again, there are not many anime that deal with Hell as a topic. Maybe Hoozuki no Reitetsu? I think the best thing that they are doing is that they are bringing back all of the original seiyuu to make this. I really appreciate when a series does that. Do you think I would make a good Ren?
honey's anime character
Maybe in your dreams. Ren is so dreamy. But waiting each week is going to kill me between episodes, especially now that this season has a different storytelling format.

Shigofumi talks about Hell. The roles of the main characters are a bit different. Death Parade also deals with judgement. AND you have xxxHOLiC which deals with a system of granting wishes and requests at a great price of the customer. Check them out Bombon while you wait!

Synopsis

This is the fourth season of Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl). It will contain 6 original episodes and 6 “reflection” episodes.

“Hell Correspondence” can only be accessed at midnight sharp.

Here, if one writes the name of the person whom one truly hates and submits it, Hell Girl herself will appear and send that person to hell… Hell Girl’s name is Ai Enma. Among young people, this urban legend has spread far and wide as a rumor, but little do they know that it is true.

When she requests come from those who require her services, Ai becomes hell girl and sends her targets straight to hell.

……. However that is where the legend stops. However there is more……. A contract was made with a girl.

Thus, one day, a mysterious girl named Michiru appeared in front of Ai Enma. With no memories of who she is nor how she arrived, Ai begins to talk to her.

Who is she exactly though?

Slowly, her tightly hidden past begins to return...

Three Episode Impression

You all know the story (and if you don’t shame on you!), of Jigoku Shoujo. Ai Enma is a girl who ferries people to hell after other people who hate them enough, make a contract with her. Ai then gives them a straw doll akin to what looks like a voodoo doll with a red string. Should the person pull that string, the person they named to her will be sent straight to hell. The sender will also go to hell though at the end of their lives. The 4th season is supposed to possibly be a conclusion to the series as it juxtaposes the need for Hell Correspondence with the need for people to just talk about their issues with each other. The story is still episodic in nature with the underlying plot of the new character, Michiru, seemingly haunting Ai Enma while criticizing what she does. The servants can see her, but we have not seen them go head to head with anyone particularly just yet. The art is a bit rough this season. The series so far has kept the same, dark pace as previous seasons, but episode three has to have been one of the darkest, most disturbing episodes that we have seen so far in the entire franchise. Do not take our word for it though, check out the series for yourself. Just have Holy Water nearby to drench yourself in afterwards.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Ai Enma

Voice Actor: Mamiko Noto

Ai is the current serving hell girl and the main character of this story. She appears to be a mature, quiet girl, but she transforms into hell girl in order to send her targets to hell. She has been hell girl for over 400 years when her village sacrificed her to their mountain god to end a famine. They did so in a cruel manner thus leading her to die with hate in her heart. After a series of events, this allowed the Master of Hell to summon her soul and have her become Jigoku Shoujo. Ai lives in the Realm of Eternal Twilight with all of her servants as well as with her grandmother who is forever spinning thread.

Wanyuudou

Voice Actor: Takayuki Sugou

Wanyuudou is the original first servant of Ai and was a tsukumogami or an object that has been around for at least 100 years and obtains a soul and self-awareness. Wanyuudou has been alive for a very long time and appears to be an old man in traditional japanese clothing and a fedora. He transforms into a black straw doll with a red string around it’s neck when Ai makes a contract with someone. Wanyuudou was a tsukumogami but then transformed into a youkai and then finally received a new form. As such, he appears as a wheel perpetually on fire with his face in the place of the hubcap. When Ai or anyone else must leave the Realm of Eternal twilight, they have to use him as transportation.

Hone Onna

Voice Actor: Takako Honda

Hone Onna is the second servant of Ai. She is a beautiful woman who is about 200 years or more old. Hone Onna always dresses in a kimono with her hair up as a reference to her past as a Geisha. Hone Onna is a youkai. She roamed the earth for a while after her death but then Ai found her and took her in. When she transforms into a straw doll for Ai, she becomes a dark red straw doll with a red string around her neck. For her powers, she is able to transform her clothing into anything she needs to to assist Ai as well as she can expose bones in her body and can even use her fingers to stab others with.

Ren Ichimoku

Voice Actor: Masaya Matsukaze

Ren is the third servant for Ai. He is an attractive looking young man who is also around 200 years old. He also is/was a tsukumogami and tends to dress in a fashion forward sense. Ren gets along well with everyone but he does not like Kikuri. His soul was a katana that was given a soul and sentience. Ai found him after he had been discarded and took him in. When he becomes a straw doll for Ai, Ren is blue with a red string around his neck. As for powers, Ren is able to become an all seeing giant eye that can appear anywhere. It is almost always just one eye as his hair covers one eye at most times.

Yamawaro

Voice Actor: Hekiru Shiina

Yamawaro is the newest companion to Ai’s team and is a young boy. While Ren dislikes Kikuri, Yamawaro takes care of her. When he is needed as a straw doll, he transforms into a yellow one with a red string around his neck.

Kikuri

Voice Actor: Kanako Sakai

Kikuri is a little girl that was introduced in previous seasons and is a bratty child. She is wrapped in mysteries and loves to tease and torment the others in Ai’s group.

Michiru

Voice Actor: Masaki Watada

Michiru is the mysterious girl who one day appears in front of Ai. She has no idea who she is nor where she has come from, and appears to be wrapped in mystery. What exactly is her aim and her purpose?
