Science vs religion where people have supernatual powers. Where have I heard this pretense before? Was it another Square Enix anime?

Nah, you're thinking of To Aru Majutsu no Index and To Aru Kagaku no Railgun! Lord of Vermilion also seems pretty cool though. It's been a minute since we have had a good warring factions anime.

Synopsis

2030. Tokyo.

One day, the outskirts of Tokyo suddenly record a high frequency sonorant before being completely enveloped in a crimson fog. Those who hear the sound, regardless if they are human or animal, all lose consciousness. The government is now paralyzed and for the time being, it’s shifted to Osaka. The phenomenon is surmised to be the work of an unidentified virus, and with the fear that it could become an epidemic, Tokyo is sealed.

However, six days after ‘The Great Resonance’, all of the people who had lost consciousness suddenly wake up and return to their daily lives as if nothing happened. After that, the sealed city of Tokyo graturally returns to normalcy as services are restored. Nothing is that simple though, as from that day on, various ‘abnormal incidents’ begin to occur. Humanity is now starting to be eroded away by the extraordinary.

In the middle of all of this, young people start to have powers awaken that were hidden in their blood known as ‘Hero’s Blood Weapons’. Drawn towards each other’s power, they are engulfed by the chains of a cruel destiny full of unavoidable encounters, mutual understanding, and the shortening of each other’s lives.
Swayed by the Blood, led by the blood, and fighting against the blood.

Three Episode Impression

An incident happens where a red fog descends on Tokyo. Some people disappear leaving their clothes behind while others wake up a week or more later and learn that the world has moved on and they are sealed behind this red fog. Life is going on but the government has moved to Osaka and is sending aid to Tokyo much to the chagrin of the rest of the country. Chihiro is one such person who happens to be the very last person to wake up. But nothing is at is seems. People turn into monsters and he has a special blood called Heroic Blood that allows him to fight these beings from another dimension. The worst part is that once they change into monsters, those people are lost and must be killed. Furthermore, Chihiro has memories sealed away that are directly connected.

Guren no Ou comes at you fast and a lot like the Fate series, if you aren’t paying attention to everything and everyone, be prepared to get lost. Which, isn’t a bad thing. Heaven forbid we have a complicated story and a series that doesn’t hold our hands. Two factions aka the church and another are going against each other. The church fosters these powers with science while another faction aims to destroy all without hero’s blood to bring about what appears to be chaos, but is clearly hiding something that we do not know. Chihiro now teams up with new people to fight and it seems like it is going to be okay, but we need a few more episodes to find out. The cool thing is though is that this comes from a game, and the anime tries hard to give off that vibe and you can sense it. We think if you liked To Aru Majutsu no Index, you would like this as well.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Chihiro Kamina

Voice Actor: Yuuki Kaji

A second-year college student. He lost consciousness during the Great Resonance and, five months later, he awakes from a coma. That’s when he awakens to his power, Hero’s Blood.

Yuuri Shiraki

Voice Actor: Misato Fukuen

Yuuri is a mysterious, beautiful woman who appears from time to time in front of Chihiro. She has the power to change the people who have fallen into comas due to the Great Resonance into monsters. She has attacked Chihiro many times, but she seems sad to do so. Her words and actions repeatedly appear to be of someone who is an acquaintance of Chihiro’s and she appears to have some sort of connection to Chihiro’s mother who went missing, but she doesn’t reveal how. Chihiro’s meetings with Yuuri will have a great influence on him and have the cogs of fate move greatly.

Koutetsu Doumyouji

Voice Actor: Satoshi Hino

Koutetsu is a first-year student at Kamie University. He looks up to Chihiro who lives at the Doumyouji household, which also doubles as the Doumyouji Sword Arts Dojo, with free room and board. Koutetsu teaches Doumyouji-style sword arts there and even though he is considered top tier, he is fixated on frontal attacks and has never beat Chihiro. He’s very set in his ways and has a reckless personality, but unexpectedly is quite sensitive and timid. After losing his father, his Hero’s Blood awakens and and he offers himself up to fighting alongside his good friend Chihiro.

Isshin Kakihara

Voice Actor: Hiroki Touchi

Isshin is a freelance journalist. Previously, he was a very competent writer for a huge newspaper, but he was persistent to crack what seemed like a certain uncrackable double lovers suicide and eventually left the organization. He chases Chihiro. Isshin views Chihiro as an enemy and circles around him like he’s a snake. He’s sarcastic, hates crowds, and is unsociable. His journalistic instinct is top rate though and starting with the AVAL Foundation for Science, he has a track record of exposing various corrupt industries. It seems the only person he cannot say no to is his assistant and junior, Tsubasa.

Shouko Hanashima

Voice Actor: Ai Kayano

Shouko is a nun who serves at the St. Verrious-Mardious Church. She was one of the first people to have her Hero’s Blood awaken, and is discovered by the masked girl, Dux. Since then, she has followed the orders of Dux, she gathers allies to help fight against the chaos in front of them. She is working towards the creation of a new world. She is friendly, but that is nothing more than a front as she doesn’t show anyone what’s in the depths of her heart. She was taken in by the church when she was an orphan, and as such, she insists that she should outlive everyone else, and will do anything to do so.

Inuki Akaya

Voice Actor: Tomoyuki Midorikawa

Inuki is a doctor at Kamie University Hospital. He studied all of the people who fell into a coma due to the Great Resonance, and is Chihiro’s attending physician. Together with his great partner, a nurse named Koume Sakiyama, they are continuing to research ways to help people to have turned into monsters return back to their original forms. Inuki has a very strong sense of responsibility, and has a propensity to take anything and everything upon himself. He too was one who had his Hero’s Blood awaken early, but he fears this power that seems to come from within himself. He seems to be researching ways in secret to rid him of it.

Koume Sakiyama

Voice Actor: Aoi Yuuki

Koume is a nurse who works at the Kamie University Hospital together with Inuki. Her trademarks are her pigtails and her eyepatch on her left eye. She has a cheerful personality, but her choice of words and actions are wild and rough. At the same time, she does have a kind side to her that allows her to think of others... or so it seems. She too had her Hero’s Blood awaken early and tends to set the mood at St. Verrious-Mardious Church. However, she was forced to participate in a ‘certain past experiment,’ and that has now become her driving reason for fighting.

Jun Aoi

Voice Actor: Junichi Suwabe

Jun is the leader of the color gang, Blue Skull. He has gathered a massive group of people together with is overwhelming charisma leaving many tales of his heroics behind. Jun holds strong convictions to the point that he will not hesitate to make sacrifices. He is plotting to destroy Chihiro and make humans into monsters using the Great Resonance with a snap of his fingers. He has a very powerful Hero’s Blood and is the vanguard squad leader within his organization. Jun was raised in an orphanage and seems to have a deep relationship with Inuki Akatani.
