About Made in Abyss:

If you haven’t watched the Made in Abyss series, this is a great opportunity to join the rest of the fans to fall in love with its dark, beautiful story. The enigmatic Abyss is an unforgiving and deadly place. Despite the dangers, it still captures the imagination of explorers like Riko who wishes to follow in her famous mother’s footsteps and trains hard to become a Cave Raider like her. One day, Riko receives news that her mother died in the Abyss, yet a mysterious note tells Riko that her mother may still be alive. Vowing to uncover the truth about her mother’s fate, Riko embarks on a journey with a mysterious humanoid robot boy she and her friends found named Reg. Together, Reg and Riko will discover if they have what it takes to survive where so many others have perished.

Why You Should Watch Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn

The first movie in the two-part Made in Abyss compendium does a wonderful job of collecting all the best moments from the first half of the series and adding to them to make a more beautiful and complete picture than one would normally expect from a compendium movie. Most series-to-movie adaptations end up missing a lot of information and glossing over parts we considered important or memorable. That is not the case with Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn. If you’ve never watched the series, you will never feel lost or like you missed something, whereas if you’ve seen it already, you’ll find the upgraded graphics and added scenes to be a lovely bonus you didn’t even know you wanted.

At almost two hours, Journey’s Dawn is not a quick watch, but it never drags. We quickly become acquainted with our main characters, fall in love with them, and set off on a journey with them. Every minute of Journey’s Dawn is filled with storylines, plot-driving relationships, important conversations, and of course, gorgeous and fantastical settings and character designs.

Though a lot happens in Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn, as the first installment, it also sets up the rest of the story and takes us through the beginning of Riko and Reg’s journey. We get to meet all the important characters, find out some interesting facts about their world, and we are plunged into the multiple levels of the Abyss, awestruck by the beauty and heaviness of it all while worrying about our adorable little heroes and whether they will reach their goals and find the answers they seek regarding themselves and the Abyss itself.

Final Thoughts

We expect nothing but greatness from Kadokawa and Sentai Filmworks so it’s no surprise that they would not only create such an incredible anime series but they were able to somehow make it even better and accessible to those who missed it and don’t have the time for a full binge-watch. At the same time, this gorgeous film is sure to be loved and enjoyed by those familiar with the series as well, and no doubt, when it is available on Blu-ray, it will be quite the collectible item.

Are you planning on watching Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn in theaters this month? Will you watch it dubbed? Or subbed? (They are both fantastic, by the way.) Will you be attending the red carpet premiere? Talk to us in the comments below, and see you at the movies!

An otaku as far as I can remember. I grew up playing video games, watching anime in Spanish in Mexico where I grew up, and then was a member of both anime clubs at UTEP for my entire university life when I moved to Texas. I love going to cons, I used to cosplay (always hoping to get back into it), and I got to live in Japan for 2 years and be an otaku there! It was literally a dream come true! Now back in the US, I love being a writer and editor for Honey’s. It’s a great chance to keep up with all the latest anime each season and up to date with all otaku news. And without our readers, that wouldn’t be possible so, thank you for being a part of our hive!!
