Asuka had hoped to live a normal life, but the trauma of her previous combat experience remains with her. Different from your typical magical girl anime, this series deals with dark topics like PTSD in a more realistic way. Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka centers around Asuka and the other surviving magical girls, though the girls have been introduced slowly each episode. The series has an interesting dichotomy, in that it includes plenty of fan service of Asuka and her friends, yet also has moments like in episode one, where Asuka flashes back to when she first came home to discover her parents have been dismembered by some of the Disas monsters. Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen is definitely not for the faint of heart, as it promises to be even more gruesome and bloody in the future. A much more militaristic take on a magical girl anime, this series could turn out to be the dark horse of the season!

Nozomi is Asuka’s classmate and a promising member of the track and field team. She often spends her time together with her classmate Sayako. She was the first person to approach Asuka who was isolated in loneliness in their class. Her father works for the intelligence bureau of public security for foreign affairs.

Sayako is another classmate of Asuka’s. She is timid and does have her introvert moments, but she harbors feelings of adoration for the magical girls who fight for humans. She’s a bookworm who belongs to the literary arts club. Sayako gets along well with her classmate Miki.
