What You Need to Know:
- It has been announced that Masao Maruyama and Hidenori Matsubara will be returning to Otakon this year.
- Maruyama was involved in the establishment of MADHOUSE in 1972. Since then, he has nurtured talents such as Tetsuro Araki, Atsuko Ishizuka and the late Satoshi Kon. In 2011, Maruyama left MADHOUSE and formed MAPPA, whose first major project was 2012's Kids on the Slope television anime series. Maruyama has also been an honorary Otakon staff member for many years.
- Anime director and character designer Matsubara joined anime studio Gainax in 1988 and was involved in the production of classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. After that he became freelance, and worked on shows such as Oh My Goddess!, Sakura Wars, and Space Battleship Yamato 2199.
