Megalo-Box-300x450 MEGALOBOX
Ashita no Joe meets Steampunk and honestly I am dying for this to come out. I NEED this!
Megalo-Box-300x450 MEGALOBOX
This is for the 50th Anniversary of the series. I can't believe it has been going for so long! Junk Dog already feels like a Spike or Mugen. We may have a favorite new luck-pusher.

The steampunk elements are definitely helping the story evolve. Boxing anime are rare, so I think that we have a good work on our hands.

Well, we had Ashita no Joe, Ganbare Genki, and Hajime no Ippo among others so, I hope we can expect something good!

Synopsis

An original anime created for the 50th anniversary of Ashita no Joe.

A dark underground ring.

A man known as JD (Junk Dog) once more throws himself into a fixed match in order to live.

However, that’s when he meets his destiny - a destiny he wants to challenge with all of his might.

Three Episode Impression

Mad Dog aka is a man working in an unauthorized zone as a megalo boxer. Essentially, this is boxing but with robotic arms over the upper half of the human body. Joe works with Gansaku, his alcoholic manager who has a lot of debt and makes money fixing matches with Joe. However, when he comes across Yuuri, a supposed champion and is going to be in a megalo boxing tournament, a switch flips in Joe as we see his desire to become a major contender. However, he is not a legal citizen, so they fix up a fake ID and get him in. Now, the tournament begins.

As someone who has not seen Ashita no Joe nor has the desire to, there is something very interesting about the way Megalobox presents itself. Sure, there is lots of boxing and talk of boxing, but the rundown dystopia of the city in contrast with what Joe lives in beckons to the great cyberpunk era of anime and makes for a fun story. We see elements of the great Spike Spiegel in Joe making him all the more likeable. The story is setting itself up, and it’s clear that matches will start in episodes 4 or 5. The series looks like it was set in a world akin to Michiko to Hachin or Garo: Vanishing Line and honestly, we are here for it. If you want an anime that is going to probably be overlooked by the masses, then this is a fantastic watch for the season. It’s only 1 cour, but the story could get more from the way it is going as the world expands with each episode.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Junk Dog

Voice Actor: Yoshimasa Hosoya

Junk Dog is a man who only has a nickname and nothing more for a name. He is a megalo boxer in an unrecognized, underground district and has an unfocused irritation against those who win in fixed matches. However, a chance encounter gives him a sponsor and he awakens as a man.

Gansaku Nanbu

Voice Actor: Shirou Saitou

Gansaku is someone who gambles on fixed megalobox matches in the unrecognized district saving up his daily winnings. However he indulges in alcohol as well as the desires right in front of him which means he has a very large amount of debt. He is especially excellent at being a trainer for boxers and is instilling various boxing techniques in Junk Dog.

Yukiko Shirato

Voice Actor: Nanako Mori

Yukiko is the heir to the Shirato group of companies known as a ‘concern’. She is the chief executive and ringleader who arranged the Megalobox tournament known as ‘Megaronia.’ She’s of exceptional beauty and also has majestic ambitions.

Sachio

Voice Actor: Michiyo Murase

Sachio is a street urchin who lives along with other street children in the unrecognized district. They are well-versed in mechanics and computers.

Fujimaki

Voice Actor: Hiryuki Kinoshita

Fujimaki is the man who runs all of the underground megalobox gambling. He uses inhumane methods to collect debt from those who cannot pay back their gambling debts. Nanbu owes Fujimaki a lot of money as well and after he failed with a certain incident, he is pressing Nanbu to handle a certain issue.
