Synopsis
This movie is made up of two short stories, “Ishi Okoshi” (Stone Waker) and “Ayashiki Raihousha” (The suspicious visitor).
In “Ishi Okoshi,” Natsume is in the forest and meets a small youkai (monster/spirit) named Mitsumi. Mitsumi has been entrusted with the responsibility to wake up the divine youkai Gantetsu from its deep sleep. However, an intoxicated Nyanko-sensei as well as other youkai start planning to steal Mitsumi’s place, so Natsume decides to try to help Mitsumi out...

In “Ayashiki Raihousha”, a mysterious visitor suddenly appears before Tanuma. They come by almost everyday, talk to him for a little bit and then leave. Natsume learns that this visitor is a youkai and immediately worries about his friend, but it seems that Tanuma has started to enjoy these conversations he has with the visitor.
The visitor doesn’t seem to have any ill intentions, but Tanuma’s health slowly seems to deteriorate...

Takashi Natsume: HIroshi Kamiya
Like his grandmother, Reiko, Natsume has the unique power to see youkai. He lost his parents when he was young, and thus he grew up in various relatives’ homes. Ever since he found his grandmother’s “Book of Friends” he has spent his days interacting with many different types of people and youkai. The book has sometimes given him troubles, but he spends his days trying to return their names to the youkai who wants it.
Madara / Nyanko-sensei : Kazuhiko Inoue
Nyanko-sensei used to be in a different, beautiful shape and go by the name of Madara. But, he was sealed as a lucky cat for so long and has thus gotten used to his new body. Natsume has promised that the day he dies, the book of friends will be given to Nyanko-sensei, so he is always close by both as Natsume’s partner as well as a housecat. He’s very reliable but also a bit fickle.
Kaname Tamura: Kazuma Horie
Tanuma’s family runs a temple in Yatsuhara. He’s one of Natsume’s classmates and just like Natsume, although not as strong, he can sense youkai. Because of this, though, the moment he senses one, he gets sick. He’s one of Natsume’s dear, close friends.
Mitsumi: Hisako Kanemoto
Mitsumi is a small youkai that Natsume met in the forest. Its responsibility is the wake up the divine youkai Gantetsu that sleeps by a small shrine.
Visitor: -
This visitor suddenly appeared in front of Tanuma, and is actually a youkai. It comes by almost everyday, talks a little and then leaves. It’s unknown what its motive is.
Misuzu: Takaya Kuroda
Misuzu has a human body but a horse face. Their name is written in the book of friends, but because they’re curious about Natsume, they don’t ask for their name back.
Hinoe: Akemi Okamura
Hinoe is a curser. She hates men, and she had a crush on Reiko so she is curious about Reiko’s grandson Natsume since they look so much alike.
Chukyuu (Hitotsume): Takashi Matsuyama
They live in Yatsuhara, and are middle-level one-eyed youkai. Nyanko-sensei often plays with him when he’s drunk.
Chukyu (Ushigao): Hiroshi Shimozaki
They live in Yatsuhara, and are middle-level cow-faced youkai. Nyanko-sensei often plays with him when he’s drunk.
Chobihige: Cho
Chobihige is sometimes called “Chobi.” He claims to be a high-level youkai. He’s very calm and speaks politely, but he can be pretty rude.
