We had hoped that we’d learn more about Gevaudan, but apparently, mangaka Hirao likes to tease us readers of Ne0;lation. For our thirteenth chapter of Ne0;lation, we have the race ending with Brother Taa being the victor and retaining his temple that he almost lost. Boogie, meanwhile, ends betting on races and shows that he won’t tolerate anyone doing bets again, that poor dude’s arm…Aside from those developments though, chapter 13 of Ne0;lation only gives us a few small tidbits of interesting plot such as what the symbol of Gevaudan means and looks at—briefly—an image from ne0’s past. There was some elements we liked about our newest chapter of Ne0;lation but equally, some things we didn’t.
1. Is ne0’s past soon to be explained?!
The finale of chapter 13 of Ne0;lation showed us readers an interesting little panel. We see a young boy—assumed to be ne0—receiving a laptop from a young girl as a gift. Is this what led ne0 towards his hacker/cracker path in life? It’s a nice set up for the next chapter if we do actually see ne0’s backstory explained.
2. Is ne0 good?
We know that ne0—while just and on the side of good—helps others and uses his cracking/hacking skills to take down baddies, though we don’t really know why ne0 does this. Is ne0 doing this to truly help those less fortunate or is there an ulterior motive we haven’t seen divulged yet? Boogie paints this possibility when he talks to ne0 about his age and why he decides to help others and plants that thought in our minds as the reader. Ne0 might be on the side of good at the moment, but was he always good and or is there a reason for his actions?
1. No info on Gevaudan!
Here at Honey’s Anime, we anxiously waited for ne0 and his pals to learn more about the symbol for Gevaudan after winning the race. While we learn the origins of the symbol—which is neat to see it was based off a beast that devours humans while being disguised as one—we really don’t learn anything beyond that. At least there’s a hint that there are numerous followers of the symbol, but do they all act like Boogie or are they careful to hide in plain sight? Too many questions revealed this week and not enough answers.
2. It’s over
The race in Ne0;lation we didn’t expect to last hundreds of chapters or even more than a dozen. Yet, its quick wrap up makes the race feel kind of underwhelming. Add to that the lack of information as we mentioned above and you have this hollow feeling after reading chapter 13 of Ne0;lation. That isn’t a good theme to any manga and we hope this is the only time we feel this from Ne0;latioin.
Final Thoughts
Ne0;lation chapter 13 really didn’t do much for us. While we get some thought-provoking questions and learn a little about Gevaudan, the whole chapter left us feeling unsatisfied.
