Where do you even start with something that is one of the most classic space opera anime of all time being rebooted?

Well, you start with a lot of good seiyuu and the announcement of a trilogy of movies as the second season due out in 2019.

It's hard to draw parallels between other series and this, but the rebellion theme as well as warring factions helps. It should go without saying that Gundam fans will love this series. Code Geass and Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei fans as well will.

I hear the characterizations are out of this world! This should be a good indicator if I should go back and watch the original OVA with over 100 episodes.

Synopsis

A few thousand years into the future, humanity has now advanced into space. They have separated themselves into two different powers via their political systems. There is the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance; an autocracy and a democracy, if you will.

The dispute between these two powers has actually continued for 150 years, and, on the stage that is the void of space, this undying conflict has once again begun to repeat itself.

Both powers continue to fight this long war.

The decay of the aristocratic society has been undermining the Galactic Empire. The oligarchy that has emerged from the democracy has been undermining the Free Planets Alliance.

Then, at the end of the 8th century, two geniuses arrive on stage and history begins to change. They are the invincible genius, Reinhard von Logengramm, and the undefeated magician Yang Wen-li. These two lead the Empire’s Army and the Alliance’s Army repeatedly crashing into battle.

Three Episode Impression

First of all, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Nue These Kaikou has very big shoes to fill. Second, the series has very high aspirations with the second season not coming till 2019 in the form of three movies. That being said, let’s return to the first point which is simply, this anime is following on the 100+ episode OVA that the original series had. That is a lot to condense into 12 episodes. It seems to be doing okay, though, putting the first two episodes in some incredibly long battle told from one side’s perspective in one and the other side’s perspective in the next, makes for a dry 50 minutes. The art is nothing to write home about, but the third episode shows that under the surface, there is a swift current of rage and disapproval flowing. For a space opera in an era where they are basically dead, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu has a long way to go before it is going to even come close to its predecessor. However, it does make for a good watch if you love old space anime, or want something where a conspiracy is going to drive a character to overthrow a government a la Code Geass. We will keep watching, but to be honest, we just want to see Reinhard snap and lose his marbles. That alone will determine whether or not the series is worth watching.
