Ever since Albert gains his vampiric powers, his life has fallen into an endless cycle of misfortune. There is a mishap at a meat processing plant in Nebraska. Albert has turned frozen in his bat form and shipped along with his meal to a foreign land. Found and arrested by the police for being suspicious and naked, he doesn’t know the Japanese language. Now, he has to rely on his new friends if he wants to get by in Tokyo, but he has to convince them that he is the bat!
Wow. We didn’t expect to find you naked in the meat factory at this time. What are you up to? Here, put up some clothes. Albert has been through a lot for eight years of his life as a vampire, and you have to give him a break. The problem is that we can’t just hand him over to the US embassy or the authority because he is already dead in the official documents. If he wants to live here, we need to teach him the basics, at least.
1. Love-Hate Relationship
When Albert, in his bat form, was brought to the Akira apartment by the detective, Nukariya, Akira was happy about having a bat as a pet and most probably to fill in the loneliness he had after his recent break up with his girlfriend. However, during Albert’s human form, Akira suddenly went hostile against him. He had all the reasons to be angry because, in his view, Albert breaks into his apartment naked and wasted his prime beef. There goes the meat… It is natural in a modern-day society where most individuals don’t believe in the supernatural.
Another is that Akira works as an Embalmer. Albert requested blood from Akira’s job, but he chose to comply because it is a matter of work ethics. He can choose not to drink blood as it won’t kill him, but he could feel pain from the inside. Akira may not agree with Albert in some situations, but he is kind enough to provide meals and shelter for a while so that Albert can learn a thing or two to learn how to live independently in Japan.
Most of the comedic element comes from Albert's problems during his bat form and his time living with Akira. He is cute in the bat form than when he is a human.
3. Cultural Exchange
The main problem for Albert in this situation is the language barrier. Language barrier is not something we should thread lightly, no matter where we are. It is important to understand languages, to a certain level, of the countries that you are going to visit for a job, university or holiday to access everyday services smoothly. Albert expresses his homesickness and worries about getting a job to pay for the necessities can be applied to everyone and reminds us not to take things for granted and live independently.
1. More of a Prologue
This volume is more about Albert trying to settle in his new home, Akira’s home, to be specific, and learn the culture in Japan. There was a hint of purpose-built for Albert in the end, but we probably will find out his potential job in the next volume.
Everyone will always have a new beginning in their lives. There are problems and difficulties we have to face, but that is just what life is. They are there to help us reflect on our flaws to adapt and improve ourselves and the society we live in. Albert has many things to prepare to find his life purposes in a foreign country while forming a bond with Akira and Nukariya. His only new friends know his secret and take care of him. We can’t wait to see how their relationship develops and what kind of future they have in store for Albert!
This manga is meant for readers interested in a BL between a vampire and a human being, but this volume about Albert just got into his new home and prepared himself to work in Japan. If you have read this manga, whom do you think is the top and bottom of Albert and Akira?
