Offensive Combat: Redux! - OFFICIAL LAUNCH TRAILER

Who it Caters to

2017-09-03-4-Offensive-Combat-Capture-500x281 Offensive Combat: Redux! PC/Steam Review
A lot of FPS titles currently on the market tend to depict a very realistic and often times very grotesque playstyle, and while they’re incredibly entertaining they can sometimes put you off with all of the blood and guts everywhere. Not a lot of titles promote an atmosphere that’s wacky, fun yet still retains that frantic pace that we’ve all become so accustomed to playing, but then Offensive Combat: Redux! makes its appearance and that all changes. Offensive Combat: Redux! retains just about everything you’d expect from your typical FPS experience but it now throws in a ton of humor and quirky character designs to just make shooting your opponent more gratifying. You can run around in a chicken outfit and prance around your opponent’s dead body to taunt them, or shoot rubber chickens at people just for the fun of it. Whatever way you decide to play Offensive Combat: Redux! is entirely up to you but in the end the result is the same, and it’s that you’ll come out of it all laughing as opposed to ranting.

What to Expect

Laughter as we all know is perhaps the ultimate cure to all ailments of the soul, because it purifies us and brings us back into a state of calm. A lot of FPS titles that you jump into tend to create a lot of tension simply because the tempo is so high and a lot is on the line in most cases. In Offensive Combat: Redux!, that tension is facilitated as you have characters with strange weapons and costumes running around frantically, in a comical manner which just puts your mind at ease. You don’t really need to take things seriously as you play and so each kill you do get is more of a celebration of laughter, rather than a frustrating rebuttal to an enemy who randomly respawned and killed you in battle. While all the nuts and bolts of FPS are there this title erases a lot of gore and instead replaces it with wacky animations, random taunts known as ‘Pwning’, and just an overall feeling of joy. With more content coming down the pipeline starting this month, Offensive Combat: Redux! is a title that seems to keep on giving and is far from offensive despite the title. Well perhaps the taunting can be a bit over the top at times, but once you start to see how comical it all is it becomes more of a small jest than an insult.

Gameplay

So you can play through the single player campaign and blast your way through a group of CPU opponents, or you can jump into where the real party begins which is the online multiplayer where you can choose from Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. We would assume that any FPS aficionado would certainly buy the title to play with other real players and not the CPU, but that shouldn’t stop you from playing through single player to get a feel for how everything plays out. This game doesn’t really take itself seriously and that’s perhaps what makes playing it so entertaining, and you’ll notice that the minute you load up the game and start customizing your character. You can pretty much come up with any whimsical costume that comes to mind should that costume piece be available, but with the game bestowing you with a ton of cash off the bat you can let your imagination run wild. You want a chicken head with mummy arms? No problem. You want a robot head with the legs of a maid? Sure, go right ahead. We really mean it when we say this game really goes over the top with its comical approach and that’s the beauty of it.

Once you dive into the game and start racing around trying to shoot people, you realize that it’s actually a lot of action taking place and while there’s plenty to laugh it, you still want to compete and earn your fair share of kills. Each kill you receive earns you coins that you can use to purchase more wacky items as well as powerful weapons, and by pwning your downed enemy you can collect parts as well. So in the end there’s an actual reward for keeping your kill streak high and it motivates you to keep playing. Other titles do encourage a similar type of structure where you can receive perks that can help you and your team claim victory, but with Offensive Combat: Redux! a lot of that reward comes strictly by you most of the time which allows you to really go crazy with customizations. There aren’t kill cams or instant replays of the best kills, but the pwning makes up for all of that since you get a laugh at all the variants of taunts that other players use. You can fart on your opponent, tea bag them, do the peanut butter jelly time dance, or just prance around them like a ballerina. Whatever way you feel is best to humiliate your opponent is up to you and that’s the pure elation this game provides.

There’s also a weapon tree that resembles that of a skill tree and so, you can use the xp you acquire from games to level up your weapon and bring the heat into battle. If you need a little bit of practice before jumping in there’s also a gun range that you can take advantage of and try out some new weapons. So despite the game really being more of a joke than anything (we mean that in a good way), it actually comes with a lot under the hood, and provides that very same FPS experience you know and love. The Looney Tune style sound effects keep you chuckling while the large multiplayer maps have you racing around trying to find enemies to dance on. It’s an endless party, and when played with friends, it’s non-stop entertainment. We don’t expect this game to win FPS of the year award anytime soon because we’ll be honest, despite all the flavor it provides it still seems to lack in a number of areas one of which is the visual. While the map designs are very large and immersive, the details remind us of a PlayStation 3 game and there are times when the framerate drops which creates problems for you and other players. We did mention earlier that this game isn’t designed to be realistic so we can see why the team went with a more comical design, but be that as it may it could still use a bit of fine tuning.

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

2017-09-03-4-Offensive-Combat-Capture-500x281 Offensive Combat: Redux! PC/Steam Review
In the end Offensive Combat: Redux! is a title you’d play when you don’t feel like watching all of that blood and gore and just want to spend a few hours shooting people with lasers and other random items. The concept is very simple but is applied in a smart way so that you don’t ever feel bored as you play. Every map entails something fresh to explore and discover, adding new strategies each time you play it. Every gun has its perks as well as its cons so the game encourages you to try everything out at least once, which adds even more long term value. We definitely recommend this game to fans of the FPS genre because it truly is one fun title to play, and it comes with enough depth that you can spend a great deal of time just customizing and collecting coins.

Honey's Pros:

  • Very very fun and amusing to play not only alone but with friends.
  • The single player experience is worth it if you’re new to FPS games.
  • Online multiplayer is crazy, wild and totally outrageous.
  • Customization is surprisingly deep for an FPS game.

Honey's Cons:

  • Framerate issues often come into play.
  • Characters often go through walls when taunting.
  • Graphics aren’t really the greatest but not the worst.

Honey's Final Verdict

So you pretty much get the drift here with Offensive Combat: Redux! based on our assessment, and we hope that you give it a whirl because you’ll honestly have a ton of fun. It sounds repetitive but we can’t stress it enough how entertaining playing this game is and because it’s not really meant to be taken seriously, you can play with ease.
