This... this isn't related to Bakumatsu Rock or Sengoku Basara... right? They are not connected... right?
Bakumatsu-300x417 Dive into The Three Episode Impression for Fall Action Bishounen Anime Bakumatsu!
No, this is an time travel/culture anime. It certainly does have a Code:Realize ~Sousei no Himegimi~ vibe to it overall based on the art. I'm not opposed to it if it ends up being like that.

I don't see a girl character though... Does that mean we get BL?!

Bishounen, yes. BL? Probably not. This could end up being similar to Touken Ranbu–Not Hanamaru–and I am okay with that.

Synopsis

The time is the end of the Bakufu.

The future of Japan is troubled, and the era is a period of passionate men devoted to their ambitions as a rivalry of local warlords.

Shinsaku Takasugi is a lucky adventurer from Choushuu. Along with his partner Kogorou Katsura, they infiltrate a ship of the Naval Shogunate commanded by Yoshinobu Tokugawa. They are in search of a legendary treasure that gives one the ability to control time known as ‘Jinshingi pocketwatch’ (Chronometer). Shinsaku heard a rumor that the Shogunate are planning to use the Jinshingi to rule over the entire country. So, he plans to steal the secret treasure with the goal of destroying it.

‘Using this to rule over the country is boring. They have another way to take control!’ However, Shinsaku has the Jinshiki in his hands for just a brief moment of time before it is stolen by a mysterious woman in all black clothing. In order to get it back and finish what they started by stopping Tokugawa from ruling the country, Shinsaku and Kogorou chase after the woman to Kyoto where the Shogunate is. When they arrive, they see a strange figure and reigning deity, Susanoo.

They are greeted with a completely different city to the one they knew, and the way the people look bewilders Shinsaku.

Here, this is another Shogunate dominated by Toki Mugen, the masked Shogun (general). Sticking true to their convictions, they push onward to fight against the Shogunate loyalists in a new battle that goes beyond time.

Three Episode Impression

Bakumatsu must draw its name from the Bakumatsu era when the Tokugawa shogunate was ending. With this anime, we get to see an alternate dimension where the shogunate has been replaced by a deity. Well, I want to say ‘alternate dimension,’ but they keep talking about time so it’s like they are insinuating that the future has something to do with this weird alternate future where the people are bombed by cannons and Japan will attack the rest of the world with a flying blimp. Really, the concept of time is distorted in Bakumatsu. I think they really want to talk dimensions, which really keeps me from getting to into Bakumatsu to begin with. Then there’s this thing where it’s basically like the other Touken Ranbu anime where the samurai are pretty boys, especially the Shinsengumi. However, I’d compare this work to Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu with its different take on Japanese history. Unfortunately, though, Bakumatsu’s story is extremely dry and not engaging. Parts of it appear to be lighthearted, but not enough for you to get to know any characters, and there are a lot of them right from the start. Bakumatsu is really just another Shinsengumi bishounen anime that isn’t even technically focused on the Shinsengumi at the moment, but I am willing to bet that changes in another episode or two.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Shinsaku Takasugi

Voice Actor: Yuuichi Nakamura

If it is for the sake of something he believes in, Shinsaku will charge into anything headfirst without a second thought. Kogorou tends to scold him frequently because of his pushiness. He is from Shouka Sonjuku where Shouin Yoshida guided him. He respects ‘Shouin sensei’ and treasures his teachings even now. He also has a natural strong disposition for an assumed sense of duty.

Kogorou Katsura

Voice Actor: Takuya Eguchi

Kogorou is generally cool, calm, and collected, as well as serious to a fault in his straight-man role. However, he does have a propensity to be dragged into troublesome things when acting with his fellow student Shinsaku when Shinsaku does anything. Still, they have a deep mutual trust in each other. His gallant figure is truly the ‘cool character.’

Ryouma Sakamoto

Voice Actor: Shinichirou Miki

Ryouma is an amicable character able to curry favor easily with anyone, but at the same time, he is smart enough to exhaust all avenues possible for his goals. He’s quick-witted, and he demonstrates an incredible business sense allowing him to play things by ear and wander from place to place. Izou is his convoy who he always keeps at his side.

Izou Okada

Voice Actor: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka

Izou is Ryouma’s convy and due to a certain reason, they act together. Izou has a delicate body and masters any kind of mission quietly. His swordsmanship stands out above the rest and is constantly honing his intuition. His raw explosiveness draws a line between him and others.

Toshizou Hijikata

Voice Actor: Toshiyuki Someya

Toshizou is the Vice-Commander for the Shinsengumi. He harbors the conviction to support the Commander, Isami. Because he is so strict with the law, those around him fear him, but in reality, he has his human side too as he worries about Saitou who is good at looking after others.

Isami Kondou

Voice Actor: Takuya Satou

Isami is the Commander of the Shinsengumi. No matter the circumstances, he always thinks of his troops first. His honest personality makes him popular in contrast with Toshizou’s strict personality, and commands the wild Shinsengumi as one. If it’s for the sake of his allies, then he can show his resolve as well as his unimaginably sharp and keen insight, stemming from his broad-mindedness, which allows him to see through to the truth.

Souji Okita

Voice Actor: Tsubasa Yonaga

Souji is the leader of the first unit of the Shinsengumi. He has a smile on his face always but he is a combat maniac. He hates compromise, and his excellent instinct allows him to succeed at work. However, whenever anything interferes with his goal, the chink in his armor shows which is that his childlike stubbornness rears its ugly head.

Hajime Saitou

Voice Actor: Keita Tada

Hajime is the leader of the third unit for the Shinsengumi. He is a skilled swordsman on the same level as Souji. He is often contracted to undertake missions of assassination or purges. If he has to be accompanied on missions, then it is more often than not that he is paired with Souji. He has sworn loyalty to Isami, but sometimes mumbles poisonous truths.
