Discussion Time

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den has shown a wide range of emotions in its nearly thirty chapter run. However, chapter 29 is where we get one of the most shocking stories of the series. Our story starts as we continue from last week’s big battle between Ben and Daruma. Despite being extremely tough and whittling Ben to half of his power, Daruma has run out of time on his transformation. Giving the reigns to the hesitant Hachimaru, Daruma unleashes his trainee’s key and reveals the past of Ben/Kotsuga to the samurai. In a desperate desire to see what Ben truly took from him, Kotsuga begs Hachimaru to sync up with him and allow him to see the story Hachimaru is learning. We then witness Kotsuga’s past and learn of how Ben truly took everything from him. Ben manipulated everything in Kotsuga’s life—who originally was named Sanda by his parents—and killed his mother, which in turn caused his father to die from losing his princess/wife and failing as a samurai.

Ben changed Sanda’s name to Kotsuga and replaced loving concepts a kid should grow up knowing with those of greed, lust, and desire. Now privy to the past, Kotsuga begs Hachimaru to forgive his actions against the team and defeat Ben Hachimaru watches the once samurai and tells him that he still has his samurai heart which we can infer as him saying he will indeed help the thief! Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den chapter 29 has impressed us in a multitude of ways that we could review the chapter for hundreds of pages but we’ll keep our review short and give you two reasons you can’t pass up this integral chapter!

Why You Should Read Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den (Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru) Chapter 29

1. Once His Name Was Sanda

Daruma allowed our young Hachimaru to see Kotsuga’s past via his key and wow… that revelation wasn’t an easy thing to take in. We learned that Kotsuga was once named Sanda by a loving family who was manipulated behind the scenes by Ben. Kotsuga was born from Ben’s desire to take on a young apprentice and impart in him the darker ways of living to breed someone just like himself. Truly Ben, you’re an evil person and we’re pretty sure all of you out there reading will agree with this statement.

2. Hachimaru, Your Turn

We knew full well that Daruma’s brief transformation back into his human form wasn’t going to last forever. What we didn’t expect was the form to end so quickly. Now Hachimaru is tasked with defeating Ben and while Ben might be weakened, he’s still far from a pushover. Does Hachimaru have enough strength to take up the task set by his master and unleash revenge for Kotsuga?

Final Thoughts

Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den 29 was incredible, that’s really what sums up our review. Kotsuga pulled a sneaky and cruel move by betraying his friends but seeing his past mired in darkness thanks to Ben has allowed us to forgive the thief. Now Hachimaru has to unleash a beat down on Ben and chapter 30 should be where said beat down occurs!
