Synopsis

The 2nd Season of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu.

Unable to forget the rendition of “Shinigami” that the great rakugo master Yakumo performed at his prison, Yotaro headed straight to the rakugo theatre after being released from jail. After begging Yakumo to take him on, Yotaro becomes his live-in apprentice. Now, having polished his skills, he has finally advanced and become a headliner. The professional name handed down to him? Sukeroku the 3rd. Just what kind of rakugo will Yotaro perform for his teacher Yakumo, for Konatsu, for the sake of changing the Sukeroku that lives within them both?

Three Episode Impression

We have been waiting for this moment all year. The moment when Rakugo comes back to entertain us with further storytelling. It opens with Yotarou aka the new Sukeroku, being promoted to shin’uchi and his celebration. Konatsu has had the baby and now she and Yotarou are living together. Yakumo has gone from being the sassy, feminine, very obviously in love with Sukeroku, storyteller, to a bitter old man who likes to complain about everything. He spends every minute of screen time being sour while Konatsu burns with indignation. We are still waiting to see what is going on, by the way, with her father aka Sukeroku and Yakumo. However, Yotarou gets wrapped up in a scandal where people see his back tattoo from previous days. This leads to a fallout in his attendances. He confesses to Konatsu and they begin to live together as husband and wife, but he gets involved with another issue with the former boss of the gang that he used to be in. There is a murky backstory with Konatsu and the boss, and if you put 2 and 2 together, things will make sense fast. Rakugo 2 is as dramatically enrapturing as the first season was, and the dramatic effects increase with each episode. For those who have missed season one and are wondering about it, Rakugo falls in our top-ranked shows this season. Beware though, those who do not have a good sense or respect for Japanese culture may find it a bit hard to get into, however the reward is well worth it.
