- Location : Javits Center
Intro: This Slime is Going Strong
As we were reminded by the host of the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Special Event, this series didn’t release without a lot of obstacles impeding it. Released in March of 2019, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime came out during the height of COVID-19 and that meant creating this adaptation would be no small feat. With restrictions to how people were moving around, travel bans, and businesses having to almost close, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was met with a challenge we doubt many would think possible. Yet, it did release thanks to the talented people working on it which we got to meet during the special event!
Kouhei Eguchi, Mika Iwahashi, and Bungo Kondo all came on stage to open the event by answering questions about the challenges they faced releasing That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and a little about the main event, the special preview/show for the new movie That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond! Despite the various challenges these great creators/workers faced, they showed that That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was always destined for greatness and a movie was obviously going to be released one day!
While the western shores won’t see That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond this year—we get it in 2023—that didn’t mean we came to this event just to hear talk about the series and remember the darker last few years. No, we here at Honey’s Anime alongside a large crowd of fans were soon going to be given several big moments and wow…were they not what we expected in the slightest!
Panel Discussions: The Slime Origins
Before we dive into the performance—we know you want to hear about that—we’d like to talk more about the panel guests as they brought a lot of interesting information and revelations on the origins of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Kouhei Eguchi, Mika Iwahashi, and Bungo Kondo were asked about their various exploits and what their teams faced when creating the series and we got to listen to them really show just how much they had to deal with.
COVID—as we mentioned—was a big challenge but many may have forgotten that animation already is a true battle with having to meet deadlines, discuss animation styles and works and deal with having to make sure the series shows promise despite all the issues surrounding it. The guests all had their input and even went into depth about their favorite elements of the series, their individual journeys while making it, and even a few battles they had while crafting the movie. Our favorite moment was when they told us that a Goku-like character was made for the film and had to be quickly edited as the artist did TOO good of a job and almost ended up making a carbon copy of the legendary warrior!
It was nice to see such an in-depth side of the process as we fans can sometimes forget how much work really goes into making any anime! After their brief questions/answers segment, the true performance began and that is where the event really began!
Performance: The Trailer That Sent Shivers Down our Wings
After the brief discussion we learned everyone in the audience would be given a first look at a scene not seen anywhere else in the world from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond! The lights dimmed, the screens lit up and before we knew it we were whisked away to an unfamiliar location meeting a new character who would impress us almost immediately, Hiiro.
This ogre warrior and his small mercenary group were ambushed by an unknown band and despite his team quickly meeting ill fates, Hiiro took up his long sword and slew enemy after enemy in some of the best animations we’ve seen from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Despite his best efforts, Hiiro would lose, and then we’d meet another new character named Towa as she healed our ogre using some form of spiritual magic. We won’t spoil anything else—as there were another good few minutes of content—but we knew this movie would be something special. The visuals looked incredible and these two new characters already made us wonder what they would bring to the world of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and how our slime MC Rimuru would get involved with their plight. It may have only been maybe 15 mins of content but no trailer we’ve seen so far has captured just how incredible That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond will be when it releases in theaters soon! But folks, this wasn’t the only surprise waiting for us. Nope, we had one more giant shock and that would be in the form of two musical guests that truly reminded us how amazing ani-music can be!
Outro: Two Musicians Enter The Stage For the Climax!
When the host came back out after that incredible trailer she pointed out that there were now two extra chairs and a table aside from the three for the other guests! We already had a feeling we knew who was coming—as it was on the pamphlet for the event—but seeing them appear was a sight to behold. STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION’s R.O.N. and MindaRyn came out to greet their fans—the audience went ballistic as to be expected—and they told us a little about their role in the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond. Not only have they produced music for the series already but there would be several of their songs being used for the movie! That news alone was shocking but again, as Anime NYC 2022 loved to do, they both surprised us with a live short concert of their various songs!
MindaRyn played several songs one from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond and she even played her newest hit—which was used in the second season of Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest—known as Daylight! She even performed the song that would be in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond called Make Me Feel Better! MindaRyn alone was excellent and had us flashing our glowsticks—provided by Crunchyroll—like we were in a regular concert event!
R.O.N. wasn’t going to be bested though as he took his DJ set up and quickly began belting out his great tunes like Genesis—which should be known for those who are fans of Dimension W—and several songs he clearly worked on for the audience to dance to! Honestly, they both sounded fantastic and we wished they would have done all of their hit songs but sadly each performed several and then had to bid us farewell. Still, even now we can feel our hearts and feet dancing as they really made an impression on us which is to be expected from these musical geniuses.
MindaRyn and R.O.N. both have a passion for music and as they said during the event, music for them is all about instilling their emotions and feelings into their tunes. Well, we felt it and we loved every second of it! The event ended with us learning more about the movie’s release and that we could pick up STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION’s newest CD at one of the sellers at Anime NYC 2022. Overall, the entire experience was something we can honestly say we treasured and we pray everyone from the event comes to NYC again in the future!
Thanks once again to every one of the amazing people that had their hands in helping this event release to Anime NYC 2022 and the wonderful people behind That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie-Scarlet Bond and the series. We’d also like to truly thank MindaRyn and R.O.N. as they surely made an impression with their wonderful songs at Anime NYC 2022!
