[Thirsty Thursday] Top 5 Walkure Romanze Ecchi Scenes

Winford Academy is a historic school located in the countryside of an unnamed country that looks a lot like Holland. The students learn everything a child of good breading should: art, literature, math, science and jousting. Yes, armor on horseback wielding a lance – jousting. You’d expect with a course offering like that there’d be dozens of young men vying for their shot at knighthood. Well this is anime, and logic like that doesn’t apply. The students vying for their shot at jousting glory are, you’ve guessed it, all most all female. A nearly all female cast is the perfect set up for a harem comedy and this show delivers that harem with just the right amount of ecchi.

The male hero of this harem in Walkure Romanze is Takahiro Mizuno, who was training to become a knight until an injury made him put aside his training a become a begleiter instead. A begleiter is a German word for companion, attendant, or escort; in this context it’s similar to squire. His champion-level ability as a jouster and his ability to handle animals makes the unassuming young man an asset to have at your side. He had refused time and time again to pair up with a knight until his friend, the beautiful Mio Kisaski gets inadvertently drawn into a joust and needs some quick training to get her ready for a tournament. We watch Takahiro train Mio and a growing collection of girls in this fun harem on horseback.

5. Episode 1 The Flower Garden

We are introduced to Mio, the kind-hearted girl with long pink hair, as she skips alone along a cherry blossom lined path on her way to school. The idyllic scene is then interrupted by a runaway horse named Sakura. We are then met by the opening credits only to come back to the show with a panning shot of a broken split-rail fence, a school bag on the ground, a tight shot of a military school jacket being pulled open exposing a brassiere before finally resting on a wide shot of a girl clutching her skirt trying to wrestle the hem from the teeth of the aforementioned horse. The fabric eventually gives way and Mio falls to the ground, shirt torn and pink panties exposed. She looks back over her shoulder at the large horse looming over her. We like this scene for the unusual equine way we get the reveal. We can’t think of any other anime where a horse is the one disrobing the heroine, which lands this in the number five spot on our list of ecchi moments.

4. Episode 9 The Maidens Festival

On the eve of the jousting tournament there is a festival, and part of this festival is a beauty pageant. The beauty pageant contestants are members of the harem. A pageant alone is often ecchi, offering plenty of fan service as the girls step out on stage in swimsuits. We even get a classic swimsuit shopping scene leading up to them going on stage. The ecchi moment is brought to us when Takahiro, dressed as the school mascot (a knight with an oversized head named Winfield) is sent to get something out of the empty girls’ locker room. We know the locker room won’t be empty for long and when the girls come in what does he do? Does he run? Does he explain? No, he sits on the floor like a rag doll thinking the girls won’t realize someone is in the suit. The girls begin to change and halfway through decide that giving the cute cuddly mascot a hug makes sense. So, one after the other they, in their underwear, cuddle up with the mascot, unaware of Takahiro’s enviable presence inside the costume. The fly on the wall fantasy puts this scene firmly on our list at number four.

3. Episode 7 Under the Windmill

Akane is one of the strongest knights at the academy and practices night and day to get stronger. She wants to be stronger in order to stand toe to toe with her idol and yuri crush, Ceila. Ceila is the strongest knight at the academy, the student council president and considered downright perfect by everyone. The sky opens up one day with a sudden storm. Akane rushes to a nearby windmill for shelter, but not before getting soaked. She nearly loses her mind when she finds Ceila standing in the dimly lit room, also soaked to the bone. Akane can barely maintain control with her idol’s wet clothes being nearly translucent. Celia, ever the practical one, suggests that they take off their clothes to allow them to dry. We get some great simple ecchi action in this scene with the two naked girls, one of whom is infatuated with the other, trying to dry off and stay warm by staying close. We even have a moment when they think rope tied in the right places could provide some modesty and in no way look like a bondage scene. The story of these two girls alone is enough for this scene to make it on our list of top ecchi scenes.

2. Episode 6 Time off in Helens Hill

Mio, Bertille and two other girls are picnicking under a large tree on their day off. We like Bertille and her friends Emma and Ann in whatever scene they are in. Bertille’s aloof and sometimes arrogant way of speaking is often softened by her friends’ commentary. They often point out her obvious errors in judgement or her limitations, making each conversation something to pay attention to. The ecchi in this scene is pretty short, and one familiar in a small way to many of us. The four of them decide to share some of the cookies with a cute nearby squirrel. If you’ve ever fed wild animals like squirrels, pigeons, or seagulls, you are familiar with the fact that once you feed one, more come demanding food. When the furry nut hunters show up, they show up en masse and immediately begin searching every nook and cranny of the girls for more to eat. We get a quick array of shots showing the fluffy-tailed tormenters inappropriately grabbing, hiding and crawling over the girls until the quartet runs to safety. A short but unique scene for our ecchi list.

1. Episode 2 Sakura’s Trial

The scene opens in the early morning hours as the fog floats across the meadows and jousting lanes. A closeup of Mio’s big blue, eyes her cheeks blushing as her hands reach out for an object in the fog. “It’s so big…” she says, hesitating. “Is this your first time touching one?” Takahiro says looking down at her. He encourages her to reach out and take hold of the large fog-obscured object. “It’s so hard and thick,” Mio comments. We think you get the point about this scene. The dialogue is definitely leading you down a path of lewd thoughts. The reality at the end of the scene may not meet with the perverseness of the language, but it is good enough to get you thinking some naughty thoughts and the reason this part of the second episode is the number one ecchi scene in the series.

Final Thoughts

Walkure Romanze is brings a lot to the table. You get the harem of beautiful women, both visual and verbal ecchi scenes, and some actual storytelling. The storytelling is simple, but several characters have their own arcs as they each overcome something they see as a failing. The main character, Takahiro, even has some good but subtle internal challenges to tackle. The most surprising thing about this ecchi anime is that it is definitely a sports anime. Yes, jousting is a sport in real life and in the fantasy world of Helens Hill. You have training segments and the tournaments and the actual battle of two opponents using human skill to conquer an opponent. The name of the anime with the word “Romanze” may make you think “Romance” and a shojo style story; but don’t worry it’s all shonen through and through.
