10. The Heroine and Ikki in Amnesia

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan 7 to Mar 25, 2013

This anime has a lot of confusion due to the protagonist’s lost memories. The heroine goes through five relationships, however the relationship that landed Amnesia on this list was the one with Ikki. Handsome and elegant, Ikki is apparently cursed because he breaks up with a new girlfriend every three months. But this rule apparently does not apply to the Heroine, who is not mesmerized by Ikki’s eyes.

Actually, this break up is kind of unusual. After ending up in the hospital due to an accident caused by Ikki’s fangirls, Ikki arrives with them to pay a visit. It turns out that the fan club has been sharing Ikki and that is why they break up with him every three months. They all apologize to the Heroine and that is the last we see of Heroine and Ikki’s relationship. Weird, right?

9. Akari and Takaki in 5 Centimeters per Second

  • Episodes: 3
  • Aired: Feb 16 to Mar 3, 2007

5 Centimeters per Second tells us the story of Takaki, who falls in love with Akari in elementary school. Akari moves to Tochigi when she graduates, but they keep writing letters to each other. When they are in middle school, Takaki finds out that he will be moving to Kagoshima, on the other side of the country. Thus, he arranges a meeting with Akari.

Everything that possibly could go wrong, goes wrong. The constantly falling snow delays Takaki’s train, and the wind blows away the confession letter he wrote. At least Akari waits for him in the station in spite of the bad weather. They pass the night in a hut talking until they fall asleep and even share a kiss… but Takaki realizes that he can not be with her. Although they promise to keep writing to each other, Takaki just stops. Kind of a sad way to break up.

8. Tsukasa and Junpei in Ichigo 100% (Strawberry 100%)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr 6, 2005 to Jun 22, 2005

So, Junpei dreams of becoming a filmmaker. One day, he awkwardly falls in love at first sight with a girl with strawberry panties. Junpei cannot remember her face (We told you this was awkward), so he starts a film club in the hopes of finding her. Junpei interacts with a girl named Nishino, a blond who at first is kind of rude and not sure of what she wants in life.

This couple is one of the loveliest we have in this Top Ten. They care for each other and Nishino is always supporting Junpei. These two represent the best part of the teenage romantic fantasies. They broke up not once, but twice. Once so that Nishino can go to another high school, and the second so that Junpei can concentrate on film making. The good part is that they go back together after Nishino successfully becomes a professional chef 🙂 But that does not mean that we didn’t get frustrated when they broke up. They are just so good together!

7. Koko and Banri in Golden Time

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Oct 4, 2013 to Mar 28, 2014

Golden time is about the life of Banri and his time attending university. Banri is mysterious because he has lost his memories! During his university life, Banri meets a certain rich girl named Koko, who falls in love with him. Because Banri is kind, he keeps being “invited” to many clubs and has a lot of adventures, besides dating the beautiful Koko.

The thing with these two is that Banri’s memories get in the way of the relationship. He used to be in love with his childhood friend Linda, but the biggest issue is that Banri has amnesia. It’s possible that if Banri fully recovers his memories, the current Banri will disappear, along with any feelings for Koko. Realizing this, Koko decides to break up with him and Banri acts so calmly that Linda gets mad at him. So yes, this was a cool breakup. The good news is that, after a lot of troubles, Koko and Banri get together again 🙂

6. Tomoyo and Tomoya in Clannad: Another World, Tomoyo Chapter

  • Episodes: 1
  • Aired: Jul 16, 2008

Clannad is an anime that tells us what happened during Tomoya’s final year in high school. He is not exactly the most social guy; Tomoya is actually considered a troublemaker. Tomoya’s mother died and he closes the door on his father. But his encounters with several girls will open up his heart to a warmer way of life.

Yes, we know Nagisa is the favorite to win Tomoya’s heart, but don’t forget that Clannad is based on a video game. There were several special chapters to see “what if” scenarios, and our favorite amongst them was with Tomoyo. Her dreams of going to a great university caused Tomoya to feel a need to let her go and thus, he breaks up with her. And although they both look kinda cool and composed, Tomoya ends up breaking up in tears after she leaves 🙁 The good news is that they are reunited at the end of this OVA 🙂

5. Hiroko and Shinji in Hataraki Man

  • Episodes: 11
  • Aired: Oct 13 to Dec 22, 2006

Hataraki man is not a story about a hard working man, but a woman. Welcome to the 21st century in Japan, where the ladies are as ambitious as the protagonist Hiroko. Hiroko is a 28 year old editor for a magazine that touches mainly economy and politics topics. With such a hard working girl, we could only get a workaholic boyfriend named Shinji for her.

The problem is that the more ambitious Hiroko gets, the more hard working her boyfriend is and the less interactions they have. Thus, in the very last episode of Hataraki Man, a drunk Shinji admits that he feels frustrated when he sees Hiroko’s passion for her work. This makes Shinji feel so worthless that he requests to break up with her. Then Hiroko does what a hard working lady would do: cry while she writes her articles. The heartbreak was real in this one.

4. Haruki and Setsuna in White Album 2

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct 6 to Dec 29, 2013

Music pervades everywhere in White Album 2, where the will to become famous is the common denominator for the protagonist, Haruki, and the two girls who compete for his attention. Haruki is a model student and aspiring guitarist who meets the singer Setsuna and the saxophonist Kazusa in the school. The love triangle doesn’t wait and Setsuna confesses to Haruki.

Nevertheless, Kazusa is silently in love with Haruki too. What is discovered much later in the anime is that Setsuna witnessed Haruki kissing Kazusa while she was sleeping. At that moment, Setsuna decided to confess her love for him openly, in hopes of winning his heart. But by the end of White Album 2, Haruki admits that he cheated on Setsuna. Setsuna, realizing that the right thing to do is to let Haruki go, breaks up with him. This particular break up was sad but bold, don’t you think the same?

3. Usagi and Mamoru in Sailor Moon R

  • Episodes: 43
  • Aired: Mar 6, 1993 to Mar 12, 1994

Yes, this is a very old anime. The viewers of the new version might find it surprising that, in this version, Mamoru broke up with Usagi due to some weird dreams that prophesied that, if they were together, she would die. He tells her that the reason is that he doesn’t love her anymore. Usagi assumes that Mamoru must be tired of her clumsiness, so she promises to be more adult like in hopes of keeping him. But Mamoru insists that they have to break up.

Later, Usagi also starts having dreams about the destruction of the earth if she continues to stay close to Mamoru. Despite what they talked about it, Mamoru insists they should not be together. The whole breakup was very painful and still has the fans crying. The good thing is that it turned out to be a scheme by King Endymion, who wanted to make their love stronger.

2. Nana and Ren in Nana

  • Episodes: 47
  • Aired: Apr 5, 2006 to Mar 28, 2007

So, this Nana Osaki didn’t have a life purpose until she met Ren. They lived together, Ren taught Nana to play the guitar, and they rose to success with their band, The Blackstones. Then, another band, Trapnest, wanted to hire Ren. That meant that he had to move to Tokyo, so, he decides to leave everything behind. Including Nana.

Ren and Nana were self-made grownups. Fully independent and with an unusual lifestyle, they found the perfect partner in each other. That is why when they say goodbye with a kiss, our heart breaks as Nana leaves the train bound to Tokyo in tears. They never had an easy story together 🙁 The good point here is that after a while, Nana decides to also leave for Tokyo to become the most famous star ever. This time, she has a fated encounter with Nana Komatsu on the train and so their story of friendship begins.

So, the breakup was seen coming since Haruka wakes up from her coma. After trying to be with the two girls at the same time, Mitsuki realizes that she can not take Haruka’s place by Takayuki’s side anymore. Thus, Mitsuki breaks up with him. For someone who was deeply involved in a relationship to the point of working for the sake of her partner, that had to hurt. 🙁
