In a typical romance themed anime, there will always be this one couple that is so irresistibly sweet such that watching them could give you diabetes. These are the couples that often meet each other unexpectedly. Yet however, you can tell that they are fated to be together. Depending on the target audience, one of the parties will be the one that’s putting in the effort in the relationship. Today’s article, to commemorate the girlfriends that puts effort into the relationship, we will list the top 10 girlfriends in anime. These are the girls that strive to make their relationship a successful one; one that makes you envy the protagonist!


10. Hitagi Senjougahara (Bakemonogatari)

Throughout most her life so far, Hitagi had been afflicted with a supernatural entity. This caused her to be weightless which in turn distanced her from most. It wasn’t until the meddling of Araragi that Hitagi was finally free from the curse. To show her gratitude to him, Araragi became the first friend of hers after so long which eventually led to her confession towards him. Now as boyfriend as girlfriend, Hitagi keeps a strict watch over him and openly admits to being very jealous whenever he is around other girls.

While it may seem scary, Hitagi only acts like this because Araragi was the only significant other person from her father that showed genuine, unconditional care for her. In gratuity, she opened herself up to him. In one of the most memorable scenes in anime, Hitagi offered to Araragi – a starry night sky, which represented just about the last of everything she holds dear and true to her heart. Thereafter, whenever Araragi is in a pickle, Hitagi will always make a last minute appearance and relieve him of the situation that he is before effecting upon him snide remarks to show her contempt for not informing her. Hitagi’s utter devotion to him and masking her worries for Araragi amidst her snarky remarks just shows us her dere side whilst being a tsundere.


9. Megumi Kato (Saekano)

While walking up a hill one day, Tomoya happened to chance upon what he described as ‘the most beautiful girl in the world’. He sets off to find her only to realise that this girl was in fact Megumi Kato. In fact, Megumi was his classmate and up till this point in time, Tomoya had not realised it. It didn’t take too long for him to find out why he had never noticed her. In reality, Megumi is the most normal girl ever. Her normalcy is so strong, that she is just… boring.

“How can a boring girlfriend ever be a top 10 list girlfriend?” is probably what you are asking. Exactly because she is the most boring girlfriend ever, she will always bring you back to earth with her realism. Megumi was said to be boring by those around her. However, coming from her point of view, she had always been herself every time. Her genuine intention to understand the otaku life and how hard it must be to be stigmatised just shows the degree of understanding she has. Megumi even went along at the whims of Tomoya and her one true expression of discontent was because Tomoya seemingly ditched her during a date showing once again how much she truly cared for the relationship.


8. Sun Seto (Seto no Hanayome)

  • Aired: Apr 2007 to Oct 2007

Sun’s actual identity is a mermaid. She saves Nagasumi from drowning. However, because she had allowed herself to be seen by Nagasumi, the laws of the sea require either her or him to die. With only one way out of it, he chose – to ask for her hand in marriage. Unfortunately, he bit off more than he can chew and not only does he have to protect her identity, he has to deal with the yakuza-ish family members of Seto.

Sun, outside of her chivalry mode, is shown to be a very gentle, considerate and caring. Seto truly believes in chivalry and will do anything to show her honourable spirit. She took it upon herself to protect Nagasumi. Often Sun will save him from her own family members trying to either kill him or hinder their relationship. This was all done unconditionally due to her belief in chivalry. Eventually, Sun grew to have feelings for Nagasumi which was reciprocated in the end as well.


7. Misa Amane (Death Note)

  • Aired: Oct 2006 to Jun 2007

Misa is a celebrity and is seen by everyone as a cheerful and bubbly superstar. However, the truth is, at a very young age, she saw her parents murdered in front of her causing her to develop abnormally with a traumatic past always haunting her. The mysterious entity known as Kira who had been going around killing off criminals is her saviour and she yearned to meet with him. With her Shinigami Eyes, Misa identifies Light Yagami as Kira and from then own, devotes her whole life to him. Together, the both of them set out in pursuit of the identity of L.

Although having yandere traits, Misa truly devotes herself to Kira. She values him as being more important than the world. Misa had to shorten her lifespan by acquiring her Shinigami Eyes to first identify him. After identifying him, her actions are fuelled and motivated by love alone. Through thick and thin, she stuck by Light to the point of being confined by L. Simply put, the visions and views of Light are now hers as well.


6. Ruri Gokou [Kuroneko] (Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai)

  • Aired: Oct 2010 to Dec 2010

Ruri or Kuroneko was one of the fellow otaku of the online group Otaku Girls Unite! Her obvious trait would be her taste in fashion. Kuroneko always dons a gothic Lolita outfit. This does not help her already small size which makes really gives her a Lolita look despite her age. Later on as the series progresses on, she started dating with Kyousuke.

While Kuroneko truly loves Kyousuke, she also sets on a mission for Kyousuke and Kirino to express and vent their true feelings towards each other by making Kirino jealous of her relationship with Kyousuke. This is the conflict she face whilst dating Kyousuke. For the better of Kyousuke, Kuroneko forsakes her relationship with him in order for him to feel happy and at ease. A shy person in general, this situation had caused tremendous stress to her and she fainted as a result. Needless to say however, even after her breakup with Kyousuke, Kuroneko still loved him.



5. Inori Yuzuhira (Guilty Crown)

  • Aired: Oct 2011 to Mar 2012

Inori was introduced as an emotionless girl. She is also the Internet pop sensation Egoist. Yet Shuu Ouma was fascinated by her from the very beginning and his numerous attempts at reaching out to her were not wasted. Eventually, Inori herself dedicated her life to him and they always fought side by side. To Shu, the most formidable weapon he has in his arsenal has always been Inori’s Void.

The relationship that they share is implicit. Undoubtedly, Inori and Shu are close enough to be considered a couple. It took significant effort from Shu to reach Inori but it paid off in the end. She develops feelings and emotions and uses it to support Shu emotionally. The final act of Inori’s sacrifice shows the extent of her love towards Shu – to protect him to the very end at the cost of her own existence.


4. Kurisu Makise (Steins; Gate)

At the age of seventeen, Kurisu (or Kurisuuutinaaa~) was already a genius in the field of science. Kurisu’s research has earned her a reputation within the scientific community. Due to the tampering of the space time continuum by Okabe Rintaro, they happened to meet. Albeit starting out with a spiteful relationship, they slowly grew into each other. While there was no confession for the first half of the anime, it is apparent that they have feelings for each other already.

This couple’s relationship can be said to transcend fate and destiny! Even through so many alterations in the passage of time, both of them still managed to find each other and fall in love. With the show’s theory of time itself, it takes a miracle to be able to find a perfect end to the relationship amidst so many other countless timelines. To get to that conclusion, one fact alone stands above all. Kurisu’s feelings for Okabe are genuinely sincere. How she puts up with his idiotic mad scientist act, his constant teasing of her and his eccentricity are just some of the factors that play a part to the overall conclusion. Theirs is a relationship so strong, that even time itself can’t put a stop to it.


3. Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online)

  • Aired: Jul 2012 to Dec 2012

Asuna is a young and helpful woman. Like many of her online peers, she was trapped in the virtual reality world inside a game where dying equates to real death. The cognizance of the gravity of the situation has made her dejected. Before meeting up with Kirito, she no longer cares for dying. After being inspired by Kirito, her outlook and even her personality changed for the better. They married within the game and after escaping from the game, started dating.

Like most successful functioning couples within the anime world, both parties complement each other. Asuna and Kirito provide strength and guidance to each other while receiving support from the other as well. Their compatibility is reflected by how great they work together as a team. As his girlfriend, Asuna is able to anticipate the actions of Kirito and follow-up on his actions. As Kirito was her beacon of hope, she fully devotes herself to him with her ultimate act of devotion to take a fatal blow from Heathcliff. Miraculously however, both of them survive on, continuing their ever so sweet romantic life together.


2. Koko Kaga (Golden Time)

When first introduced, Koko appears to be the possessive girlfriend that every boyfriend would want to avoid. Her numerous and obvious attempts at courting Mitsuo always fail. This all changed however when Tada Banri took an interest in her and they started going out. She does still get jealous when other girls talk to him or tries to take care of him. Nevertheless, she tries her best to plays the role of a good girlfriend. Finally, she becomes convinced of Banri’s feelings towards her.

It is with this new relationship that Koko’s possessiveness is transfigured into devotion to her significant other and seeks only to bring out the best in him. Koko does play the role of a good girlfriend by becoming his moral support and caring for him. She is often conflicted as to how she is able to play this role and fear that Banri will leave her due to her lack of ability. Koko openly admitted to being clingy but only because she truly loves him and wants him to be by her side. All in all, she is shown to be a person to fully devote herself and bring out the best in her significant other.


1. Rinko Yamato (Ore Monogatari!!)

  • Aired: Apr 2015 to Sep 2015

On one fateful day on the train, Rinko was saved from being a victim of a groper on the train. Her saviour is Takeo Gouda. Ever since that day, Rinko has a strange affection for Takeo. Whereas others would shun away from Takeo due to his intimidating look and bulky size, she finds it extremely charming for her. Finding every opportunity to meet with him, she deliberately left her phone at his house such that they may meet again. Eventually, Rinko confessed her feeling for him and luckily for her, it was reciprocated. Thus starts their journey as one of the sweetest couples in anime.

Rinko may be innocent, but she is definitely not dumb like most innocent female protagonists. As shown, Rinko can be calculating as she leaves her phone behind simply for the sake of meeting with Takeo again. While it may have an ulterior motive, this shows her immense dedication to the person she loves. She is also extremely considerate for his feelings and will usually invite his friend along for dates such that he won’t feel left out. This is a girlfriend who is not only understanding, but patient as well to go through all this trouble!
