The term “geek” has been around for longer than we could imagine. Over the course of its existence, it has taken on many meanings, from someone being totally obsessed with something, to a hobby that we are passionate about. Geek in Japanese means “otaku” which carries somewhat of a mixed characterization. A number of people consider a geek to be someone who is anti-social, and tend to find escape from reality. On the more positive end, it refers to someone who is well versed in a particular area of interest, and will go to great lengths to explain how things work. While there will always be two sides to every coin, we all are geeks in some way or another, because it only really emphasizes how much we truly love something. Here at Honey's Anime, we embrace the geek entirely, and so we want you to do so as well. Here are our top 10 anime for geeks.

Keima has had this overflowing passion for the gaming world, and many knew him as the “God of Conquest” due to his ability to woo a woman's heart very quicky. Unfortunately he can only do so in dating sim games, and so his real world persona is stricken with misfortunate as his obsession for the 2D girl has distorted his state of mind. Things turn interesting however, when he is greeted by a demon named Elise who gives him a mission. The catch is that he must interact with the one thing he despised the most, real life women. It is now Keima's responsibility to overcome the insecurities within and secure the hearts of real life girls, just as he did in the 2D realm.

This wonderful anime shows us some of the real life gripes that some of us deal with, especially in Japan. “Galge games” or “ギャルゲ” is a popular genre for many geeks in Japan, since it allows them to interact and work their magic on virtual women. Despite this, the show itself shows us how possible it is to overcome all of this, and grow the confidence within to move forward. Keima is extremely intelligent in the area of galge, and geeks can relate to this because they spend a large chunk of time trying to break everything down to a science, mastering the very art of what it is they enjoy. Despite being socially inept, Keima had a sharp mind and was able to use information he collected around him to turn a bad situation in to a good one. This is something we can relate to, being geeks ourselves. We highly recommend checking this one out.

Haruyuki is a young boy who, despite his portly figure, is exceptionally keen in the area of gaming. One day while at school, a popular vice president of the student council approaches Harayuki, informing him of a secret online fighting game called “brain burst”. The goal of the game is to duel against each other to gain burst points. What's cool is that the points you accumulate within the game, can be used in the real world to boost your attributes. Harayuki then focuses all of his energy to become the best in brain burst, and to disclose the truth behind the gaming project itself to the creator.

Geeks will surely love this show because of the sheer amount of technological advancements that the story discusses. The ability to travel through two different worlds has always been a dream for many, similar to back to the future. The reason why we recommend Accel World is not due to its gaming relationship, but rather because it takes place in an augmented reality. The split between real and fantasy is meshed into one fantastic adventure, where players can fight online but then use their points to strengthen themselves in real life. It's an interesting take on the action anime genre, since it delivers some very unique ideas while still maintaining a great story behind it. Check it out.

Summer Wars is an interesting anime, since it stars a math genius who is accused of creating a very threatening artificial intelligence on the world of OZ. The show demonstrates the geek term from both an academic and virtual experience. Kenji has a passion for mathematics, and his scores are almost always in the 90's. When his normal life is suddenly overturned by danger, Kenji and his friends must come together to defeat the love machine virus that has plagued the web.

While gaming shares a similar feeling among the geek community, the passion for hacking has always had its popularity for many years. Hackers have the ability to take advantage of a large mainframe, and manipulate it to their liking. Kenji being able to hack into the game to help destroy the love machine virus goes to show how dedicated he is, and he will continue pursuing it until he completes his mission. Based on the title itself, you already have an idea of where this is going. What geek these days has not dipped their hands into the growing pot of video games. It would be a surprise if one were to say that they don't play at least one form of a game, whether it be mobile or even a board game. This brings us to No Game no Life. The story follows Sora and his sister, who go by the gamer tag “blank” and are the best gamers in the entire world. Their throne eventually was challenged by the “god of games”, who transported them to his world to test their abilities. Humanity in this world has seen hard times due to their lack of gaming skill, so Sora and his sister must restore the passion into the hearts of the community.

Both Sora and his sister demonstrate great sagacity, by data mining information about their opponents and using it to their advantage. Geeks would love this since information means everything to them. Being able to crack the code to find weak points and overcome the trails that prove challenging. 5. .Hack//Sign

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 4, 2002- September 26, 2002

.Hack//Sign is certainly a name that resonates among most anime fans out there. The series is based around anime and video games that all take place with a MMORPG universe. Tsukasa is the main character of the series, who suddenly finds himself in the game, and is unable to log out due to suffering from short term memory loss. Over the course of the series, Tsukasa meets a group of friends with whom he travels with to help assist him in logging out.

While .Hack//Sign really does embrace the geek by being trapped in a fantasy world, the underlining meaning actually focuses on the importance of relationships that take place in a virtual world. Like many of the more familiar games such as Second Life, or even World of Warcraft, building relationships with others of the same passion as you can be a fascinating experience. It shows us that despite the negative connotations that come with the geek term, it is a world that truly brings everyone together in the most positive way.

MMO's have seen a decline in recent years, but that still doesn't stop people from picking them up and playing. One great example is the latest craze of Blade & Soul. The premise of Blade & Soul is very similar to that of Log Horizon, where friends must work together in order to defeat the enemy and claim their respected prize. Groups of strangers come together to fend off enemies, and develop a strong bond in a world full of twists and turns.

Reboot was one of the first “trapped in a game world” animations, and you can see some resemblance within Log Horizon. The term “modding” has become a trend for RPG games, and geeks love taking advantage of data to help benefit their endeavors. The world of Log Horizon always changes due to the characters having the ability to manipulate the world around them, while collecting items to strengthen their character. Geeks will surely find this enticing as there are a lot of technical references found all throughout the series. We hope you enjoy it.
