Lacking the offensive capabilities associated with heroes, Naofumi is ridiculed by the other heroes and the citizens of Melromarc. Each hero is given resources and a party of comrades and Naofumi sets out with just one person – Myne Sophia. Things seem to be going well with Myne until she betrays him and accuses him of taking advantage of her. The entire kingdom turns its back on Naofumi and he is forced to journey on his own, with a terrible reputation following him wherever he goes. Despite his predicament, Naofumi is still a hero and does his best to protect the Kingdom of Melromarc from the Waves.
Just like Melromarc summoned its set of heroes from various alternate versions of Japan, other countries in this fantasy world have their set of heroes as well. That’s where L’arc comes in, being the Scythe Hero who wields a weapon known as the Vassal Scythe. He is an incredibly powerful ally, but an incredibly tough time to have as a foe. 2. Celty Sturluson – Durarara!!
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: January 2010 – June 2010
Tokyo’s district of Ikebukuro is characterised by strange occurrences, rumours and even anonymous gangs and shady characters, but in the mix, the legend that stands above the rest is that of the headless “Black Rider”, who can be seen cruising the streets on a jet-black motorcycle. Ryuugamine Mikado has always wanted to live in the city, and his childhood friend, Kida Masaomi, convinces him to move to Tokyo. On his first day, Mikado witnesses the Black Rider, kicking off the first of several supernatural events to happen in Ikebukuro.
The Headless Rider of Ikebukuro. Celty is perhaps one of the most interesting characters on this list for several reasons. We’ll start with the fact that she is actually a type of Irish faerie – a Dullahan, to be precise. Despite her otherworldly being, Celty is one of the more normal characters in the Durarara cast. Her clothing, bike and pretty much the various parts of her body seem to be made up of, and connected by a shadow-like substance. Sometimes, Celty moulds this substance into a black scythe, which is quite fitting given the fact that scythes are tools used to behead and Celty… well, Celty is trying to find her own head. Literally.
1. Dark Rukia – BLEACH Movie 3: Fade to Black
- Episodes: 1 (movie)
- Aired: December 2008
A strange duo appears in Soul Society and attacks Kuchiki Rukia. Memories of Rukia disappear, but Ichigo is reminded of Rukia when Kon asks about her. He decides to head over to the Seireitei but to his horror, everyone in Soul Society no longer knows who Ichigo is. Ichigo and Kon are forced to hop into combat against their friends in Soul Society in order to get to the bottom of the strange circumstances and return everyone’s memories to normal, but will it be that easy?
Rukia loses her own memories and her very form changes after being forcibly merged with Homura and Shizuku. Her hair and eyes lean towards a lavender colour, her kimono becomes white and tattered, and her fighting ability is greatly augmented. This particular appearance of Rukia lends itself towards the first ever design of Rukia that Tite Kubo envisioned: she wields a large scythe. This malicious, Hollowfied form of Rukia is a treat for Rukia fans and BLEACH fans in general; however, there is something oddly heart-warming about seeing character concepts that were once scrapped come to life in other ways.
Final Thoughts
Commonly associated with Death and the Grim Reaper, scythes are incredibly ominous weapons and the same can be said about many of the anime characters who wield one. That being said; however, scythe combat is usually an awesome sight in anime and the nimbleness of scythe-wielders despite the nature of their weapon gives even more credence to the ominous vibes that scythes carry. There’s just something dark and alluring about them! Who is your favourite anime scythe user? Drop a comment below and tell us all about them!
Other Reference: Shinoa Hiiragi (Owari no Seraph)
Scythe is synonymous with shinigami due to the common portrayal of the grim reaper and the weapon of foreshadowing doom. A menacing weapon, their appearances are as rare as they are unique. Their presence in anime often highlights a strong character due to its iconic symbolism of death and doom, as well as the fact that it is overall a big badass weapon that looks and IS fatal. Its arching blade and tall built, makes this orthodox farming tool, unorthodox.
Whenever a new enemy appears and someone wields a scythe, be sure they are either a badass or someone potentially fatal.

10. Lisara from Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul 2012 - Sep 2012
In this installment of an obscure anime, you can think of Lisara as the Rias Gremory in this anime. She's smoking hot and sexy. Similarly, she holds the title of a Shinigami. To survive, however, she feed off "essences" of guys. What kind of essences?, we'll leave that to your imagination.
Despite the steamy premise that sets this anime, once Lisara is transformed, she takes on the appearance of a mini devil, wielding the Carnun Pladur - a black scythe with the ability to manipulate fire and flames. This combination of magical fire and the ominous scythe is win combo as she breezes through her enemies with ease.

Since it was programmed to fight, the only way to defeat it, is through overwhelming its abilities, which is hard as it is since a single sweep from it, sent both Kirito and Asuna flying.
All in all, this scythe user could be the most dangerous boss that Kirito and Asuna ever fought.

Beyond all of this, however, he is shown to be gentle and kind as well as being quite good with children.
Through either a strange twist of fate or luck, Frau eventually ends up with the Death God Verloren's Scythe. Whether he likes it or not, these two are made to stay and stick by each other, even though the scythe yearned for its previous master. Zanpakuto are the main weapons of a Shinigami, with zanjutsu being the name given to the art of wielding such weapons. Each of these weapons embodies the power and soul a Shinigami has.
With that, we have Shusei and his Zanpakuto counterpart, Kazeshini. Since the Zanpakuto is the embodiment of a Shinigami's power and soul, the weapon itself is the spirit of the Shinigami.
While in its sealed form, it maintains the appearance of a katana. Since he fears his Zanpakuto and hesitates to unseal it, Hisagi is very proficient in the art of the katana. This only goes to show how devastating he can be once he unleashes his Zanpakuto, two sickles like weapons with scythe blades that can be thrown. Thrown scythes? That's just a whole new level completely.

In his Jashin-form, he takes on a deathly appearance which is identical in looks with the Grim Reaper. Since his purpose is to kill, it's not that far off then.
Despite the size and obvious weight of the weapon, Hidan is able to swing it around using a cable, greatly increasing the weapon's range.
This peculiar way of wielding the scythe makes both, owner and scythe, a hot favourite!
3. Maka and Soul from Soul Eater
- Episodes: 51
- Aired: Apr 2008 - Mar 2009
Soul Eater revolves around the idea of making a Death Scythe - the highest title of a human taking the form of a weapon. The status of Death Scythe is so high that they are fit to be used by Shinigamis - the original wielders of the scythe.
Maka's weapon is the titular Soul Eater in this series. There is nothing better than finding out the battle dynamics of the duo than their thoughts as well!
Part of the reason why Maka is on this list is that the weapon takes a human form and that interactions could happen between them. The only way to be better in their fight dynamics is through the mutual cooperation with each other and understanding each other.

It has been noted that the scythe which Rory possess is not only bigger than her, it is equally as heavy as well.
