  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: October 2004 - May 2005

Gakuen Alice is one of those childish but has mature themes series. It’s about a girl named Mikan whose best friend suddenly moves away to a ‘special school’ and Mikan, devastated, follows her and actually ends up enrolling, too. The secret school enrolls children with “Alice”s, which are any kind of magical special ability and can range from funny to serious and dangerous.

It’s fun and games for awhile but then you start to see some mystery and danger in these adorable children’s lives who go to this school that they, more or less, can’t leave. This series garnered a lot of popularity amongst older fans as well and we are all hoping in the back of our minds for it to continue.

9. Btooom!

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2012 - December 2012

Short but jam packed with action-y goodness, Btooom! left many of us craving for more. It tells the story of a boy who ends up on an island which is a recreation of his favorite violent video game. Also on the island are seven other involuntary players with the goal being kill them or they kill you. Will his in game mad skills help him in real life or will he perish by the hands of another unwilling player?

This game themed series takes a more serious psychological approach to what would actually happen if we got forced into our favorite video games. The characters and their reactions are extremely believable and realistic. Unfortunately it didn’t end with a fully finished story and it didn’t sell well at all but we can sure hope for a new season!

8. Baccano!

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: July 2007 - November 2007

Following a premise that almost feels unprecedented, Baccano! shows us a fantastical bloody world of immortality and monsters all on board an intercontinental train during the 1930s in Chicago. This train, hilariously named the Flying Pussyfoot, will be seeing a few different storylines with alchemy, survival and immortality that will all be connected by a couple of memorable ‘thieves’ Isaac and Mirira.

This series being another example of a wonderfully crafted, interesting storyline that ended just a bit too soon, it’s needless to say; we want more! They did a really good job designing the characters to look like the 1930s in Chicago and the animation is nicely crisp and colorful for a dark toned, almost-horror setting. Baccano! really delivers a unique storyline that we don’t always get in the typical anime storylines.

7. Skip Beat!

fruits-basket-wallpaper-667x500 Top 10 Anime Which Need a Second Season [Best Recommendations]
  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 2008 - March 2009

This is a good example of series that was loved to death with plenty of manga material to continue...but didn’t. The story follows Kyoko Mogami who vows revenge on her childhood friend Sho Fuwa for using her. She joins LME, his rival company, and meets Ren Tsuruga, a top shot actor. He drives her to actually find a love and drive for acting. The manga is still ongoing even into 2015 so it’s understandable that it’d take some hard cash to complete.

The dying fan girls truly need to be satiated and although the manga is riveting, the original voice cast was hands down spectacular and had such bright visuals. With the main theme centered around acting, it would be nice to see how it actually would play out on screen.

6. Angel Beats!

fruits-basket-wallpaper-667x500 Top 10 Anime Which Need a Second Season [Best Recommendations]
  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2010 - June 2010

The best things about Angel Beats! isn’t just any one thing, it’s the soundtrack, fluid visuals, in depth characters masterfully woven into this quick but thorough plot line about the afterlife. Our MC Otonashi awakens to learn he’s dead and can’t remember anything. A girl named Yuri tells him where they are and that they battle against an entity, a girl seemingly not older than them, named Tenshi (Japanese for Angel). He joins them but eventually is so drawn to Tenshi that he mixes up the situation and they start learning about the mysteries of the afterlife.

I think most people would agree that the ending to Angel Beats! was as perfect as they come but it’s almost a tragedy that such a series is only 13 episodes long after it stole so many fans’ hearts. And as such, many, many fans are craving for more, whether it be a sequel, prequel, all new cast or what have you.

5. Claymore

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 2007 - September 2007

Claymore has always been up there on the most watched and most popular lists even after all these years. So it’s no surprise that everyone wants more! Claymore is a telling of half human, half-Yoma creations made by an organization trying to battle off the full fledged Yoma. It centers around a boy whose life was ravaged by Yoma and Clare, a Claymore with an agenda to complete her childhood goal. This story is their journey.

Of course, there’s plenty of action and adventure as well as thick personal relationships that you may find yourself growing a little too attached to. The manga finished at the end of 2014, so there’s plenty of material left to hope for another season.

4. Highschool of the Dead

fruits-basket-wallpaper-667x500 Top 10 Anime Which Need a Second Season [Best Recommendations]
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2010 - September 2010

High School of the Dead was nicely played, coming in at the most perfect time in history when zombies were hugely popular. In general, series that are able to tie together ecchi and blood really well always get high ratings but this series is up there on the most memorable. Part of it might be our forever fascination with the zombie apocalypse or maybe it’s just the the massive breasts.

The premise is typical, a mysterious lethal disease spreads and the population is being wiped out by the living dead. The main protagonist is Takashi, the eventual source of a mini-harem, who bands together with the survivors of his school which equates to many large breasted women and one nerdy guy that’s been waiting for this opportunity for his whole life. They fight for survival and to figure out what was the cause of this plague.

3. Fruits Basket

fruits-basket-wallpaper-667x500 Top 10 Anime Which Need a Second Season [Best Recommendations]
  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: July 2001 - December 2001

Fruits Basket did a really good job getting both the girls’ and boys’ fanbases rallied up, despite being a shoujo series. Also dating back to 2001, when anime was starting to get more of a cult following. Fruits Basket tells us the tale of a curse thrown upon the Souma family where when they get hugged, they turn into their respective animal of the zodiac. Of course, they’re naked when they turn back and hilarity ensues but due to the curse, is a very emotional drama about how they deal with it and how they tend to alienate themselves because of it.

Enter in Tohru Honda, a sweet, humble and poor orphan girl who somehow ends up living with some members of the Souma family who actually go to her school. The anime ended with much to be desired and I don’t think there’s anyone that doesn’t want to see this series fully finished.

2. Deadman Wonderland

fruits-basket-wallpaper-667x500 Top 10 Anime Which Need a Second Season [Best Recommendations]
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2011 - July 2011

Ganta is framed for murdering his whole class after a mysterious man slaughters everyone right in front of him. He’s sentenced to die and sent to Deadman Wonderland, a perfectly named prison of bloody carn-ary. Convicts here are forced into deathmatches at the amusement of spectators and Ganta poses no threat until he discovers a special ability within himself.

It’s got an original twist on an otherwise common plot and original animation with terrifically bloody horror themes. If you can stand the violence, this show is top to bottom worth it but it did end pretty short with some major plot points left untouched. Although it dates back to 2011, maybe we still have a chance at another season?

1. Berserk

fruits-basket-wallpaper-667x500 Top 10 Anime Which Need a Second Season [Best Recommendations]
  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 1997 - March 1998

It stands for itself that a 25 episode anime from the 90’s that is still so popular today would be wanted more of due to its wonderfully graphic, violent action, horror and mild nudity. Because of these themes, it’d be pretty hard to get any company to make it because of censorship laws and overall, it’s just pretty graphic. Even people who are not necessarily into anime or only like the hardcore ‘guy stuff’ are obsessed with Berserk as a result of the intense adult themes.

It’s about a daring warrior fittingly named Guts as he fights on the front lines. He meets a graceful, deadly man name Griffith who has powerful rogue soldiers, called Band of the Hawk, at his disposal. This is their story for power, conquest, and status that will make the opposing armies quake in their boots. It’s just such a raw series that would leave anyone begging for more.
