It’s been nothing but uphill since then, and rest assured, the professional eSports scene will continue to grow more and more.
Today’s list, we’ll be covering the Top 10 eSports Teams in the gaming community. Stay tuned, you might recognize some familiar teams if you followed the latest trend of competitive gaming!
10. Luminosity Gaming from Hearthstone
- System: PC, Mac, iPad, Android, iPhone
- Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
- Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
- Release Dates: March 2014
To start off the list, we have Luminosity Gaming from Hearthstone. Looking back, Luminosity Gaming (LG) have achieved quite a number of achievement during their run, with notable players like Zalae (Paul Nemeth), Muzzy (Muzahidul Islam), Chakki (Keaton Gill), and Fr0zen (Frank Zhang).
Despite all the success, on August 23rd, 2017, Luminosity Gaming released an article on its site announcing the disbandment of their team, stating that Luminosity Gaming is not very content with the return of investments despite their team’s good standing in the scene. It’s a shame really to see the disbandment of one of the most sought-after teams in Hearthstone. Perhaps when Hearthstone has gained more popularity or fan base that LG might reconsider to join again.
9. Incredible Miracle from Starcraft II
- System: PC, Mac
- Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
- Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
- Release Dates: July 2010
Let’s take a look at one of the most popular games in Korea. Starcraft II. It’s fair to say that the game isn’t really that popular outside of Korea, but nonetheless, it’s still something that really had an impact on the progress of eSports in general. So you got to give that some credit.
For the team itself, Incredible Miracle is one of the best teams in Starcraft II. It featured veteran players from StarCraft: Brood War; ZergBong/NesTea (Lim Jae Duk), Mvp (Jung Jong Hyun), ChRh/KYumer (Choi In Kyu), TT (Park Sung Hoon) and LosirA (Hwang Kang Ho). It’s quite fascinating if you see the achievements that Incredible Miracle has achieved in the past. Even with the disbandment of the team, Incredible Miracle will always be remembered as one of the best teams in competitive Starcraft II history.
8. MVP Black from Heroes of The Storm (HoTS)
- System: PC, Mac
- Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
- Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
- Release Dates: June 2015
Next, on the list, we have MVP Black of Heroes of The Storm! If you are thinking to yourself, “Hmm, the name MVP looks familiar”, then I’m here to confirm your suspicions. Yes, MVP Black is a subsidiary of the MVP parent organization that first made its debut in the pro-scene via Starcraft II.
Over the years, MVP Black has gained quite a name for itself. And with their recent victory in the 2017 HoTS Global Championship Grand Finals, the team managed to win $500,000 adding to their total winnings just over $1,000,000. That is some serious cash. Last October, the team announced that KSV has acquired both MVP Black and MVP Miracle’s respective rosters, subsequently changing their team's name to KSV Black and KSV Miracle.
7. GC Busan from Overwatch
- System: PC, PS4, Xbox One
- Publisher: Activision Blizzard
- Developer: Activision Blizzard
- Release Dates: May 2016
Taking the number 7 spot on the list, we have GC Busan of Overwatch! To say the least, Overwatch is considered to be the youngest amongst all the other games that are on this list, but having that said, Overwatch gained immense popularity and made it into the professional scene is just over a year. That in itself shows how impactful the game really stands.
One of the best teams in Overwatch professional scene is GC Busan. This team is quite unique in itself, thanks to the fact that it’s supported by the city of Busan, hence the name. Despite it being a recently formed team, the whole roster of GC Busan was subsequently recruited by Cloud9 after winning the APEX Season 4.
The team’s name was changed to London Spitfire.
6. SK Telecom T1 from League of Legends
- System: PC, Mac
- Publisher: Riot Games
- Developer: Riot Games
- Release Dates: October 2009
If you are an avid fan of League of Legends, then you will be all too familiar with SK Telecom T1. Why? Because this team is the only team to have won three World Championships. You would expect to see veteran players such as Faker (Lee Sang-hyeok 이상혁) and Wolf (Lee Jae-wan 이재완).
As of 2017, former players such as Peanut (Han Wang-ho 한왕호), Sky (Kim Ha-neul 김하늘), and Profit (Kim Jun-hyung 김준형) decides to leave the team, replacing them are Untara (Park Ui-jin 박의진), Effort (Lee Sang-ho 이상호). With a massive change in the roster, it begs the question: will SK Telecom T1 continue to win in the upcoming tournaments? Or will their empire slowly crumble away?
5. Samsung Galaxy from League of Legends
- System: PC, Mac
- Publisher: Riot Games
- Developer: Riot Games
- Release Dates: October 2009
On the number 5 spot, we have another team from League of Legends. This time it’s Samsung Galaxy Pro-Game Team. This team came very close to winning the 2016 World Championships having lost to SK Telecom T1 2:3 in a best of 5 match-ups.
You can say that Samsung Galaxy’s number 1 rival is SK Telecom T1. What made this team come up one spot higher than SK Telecom T1 is thanks to their recent victory over the SK Telecom, with a convincing victory 3:0 in the 2017 World Championships, earning them a little over $1,500,000. In hindsight, this team still has a lot of steam and a bright future ahead. We’ll definitely see some more incredible wins from Samsung Galaxy.
4. Cloud9 from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- System: PS3, Mac, Xbox 360, PC
- Publisher: Valve
- Developer: Valve, Hidden Path Entertainment
- Release Dates: August 2012
If you followed the professional CS: GO long enough, then you would notice that originally, the roster from Cloud9 was acquired from complexity Gaming. Even though most of the original roster had changed, n0thing (Jordan Gilbert) and shroud (Michael Grzesiek), remained but were recently moved to inactive status.
Cloud9 continued its success winning quite a number of Major leagues throughout the years, having earned over a million dollars since their creation in August 2014.
3. SK Gaming from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- System: PS3, Mac, Xbox 360, PC
- Publisher: Valve
- Developer: Valve, Hidden Path Entertainment
- Release Dates: August 2012
We have SK Gaming of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in the number 3 spot on the list. Isn’t it obvious? SK Gaming or Schroet Kommando started their roster in CS: GO in 2013 with their Swedish players.
It wasn’t until 2016 that SK Gaming started to rack up some victories over Major leagues. SK Gaming is also known to be the first team ever to win two ESL One events. They continued their success over the years, placing mostly 1st place or 2nd in Major and Premier Events which goes to show how strong and valuable the team is.
2. Team Secret from DOTA 2
- System: PC, Mac
- Publisher: Valve
- Developer: Valve
- Release Dates: July 2013
Next, we have Team Secret of DOTA 2! Originally, Team Secret’s roster consists of players from various teams after the TI 4 shuffle. They were considered underdogs at first since Team Secret participated in various tournaments yet they don’t have an official roster. It wasn’t until the morning of Starladder Series 10 that the roster was confirmed.
Over the years, players have come and gone in the team, there were controversies surrounding each player’s departure. One of which was that the players claimed that their captain Puppey (Clement Ivanov) have procrastinated in paying their players, and also taking a 10% cut out of the winnings without the knowledge of their fellow players.
As of 2016, Team Secret has been improving with MidOne (Yeik Nai Zheng) joining their team playing as the Mid-laner. Although they were eliminated in the Lower Bracket by Liquid 1:2 in TI7, the team is improving steadily. Perhaps Team Secret might able to do better in the upcoming TI8 next year.
1. Team Liquid from DOTA 2
- System: PC, Mac
- Publisher: Valve
- Developer: Valve
- Release Dates: July 2013
The number 1 spot of the Top 10 eSports Team goes to… Team Liquid of DOTA 2! It wasn’t until early 2017 that this team rose from the ashes. With KuroKy (Kuro Salehi Takhasomi) as the captain, they improved steadily in 2017. Team Liquid’s popularity also shot up when they recruited favorite pub-star player Miracle- (Amer Al-Barqawi) who are known to have the highest MMR at the time.
By the time of TI7, Team Liquid is known to be one of the favorites in the competition and despite having to fall into the Lower Bracket in the first match of the main event, Team Liquid made an incredible comeback. Against all odds, Team Liquid won every single match since their first loss, ultimately winning the TI7 altogether earning them a whopping amount of over $10,000,000.
From an outside perspective, Team Liquid’s players have extraordinary individual skills, with players like Miracle-, MinD_ControL, MATUMBAMAN, and GH, and their synergy and teamwork come together beautifully with the help from their captain KuroKy and their coach Heen (Lee Seung Gon). Fun fact, KuroKy watches anime, so maybe even at the smallest chance, let’s hope he finds his way to this article.
Final Thoughts
And that concludes the Top 10 eSports Team list! Let’s take a quick second to applaud the teams that were mentioned on this list because it doesn’t seem easy to have made it to where they are now. A lot of the games require teamwork, and that’s not something so easy to achieve. Players need to understand each other, understand how each other thinks and how each other would react in certain situations. So kudos to these teams!
