Mothers are often placed on a pedestal as the best caregivers possible for a person. One school of psychology proposes that a person seeks love when he has grown up, simply because he wishes to experience the feeling that he felt under the aegis of unconditional love provided by his mother when he was younger.
This doesn’t always hold true of course, even for fiction. But on this list, we want to showcase some of the best moms in the anime universe, whether it be through their sacrifice, love, or plain awesomeness, these are our Top 10 Good Anime Moms!
10. Bulma – Dragon Ball Z
- Episodes: 291
- Aired: April 1989 – January 1996
One of the longest running characters throughout the series, Bulma is the wife of Vegeta and the mother of Trunks and Bulla. Initially, she starts out as a whimsical character who wishes to find the dragon balls in order to wish for unlimited strawberries, but eventually changes her mind to wishing for a perfect boyfriend. As she grows through the series, she matures and eventually settles down with a family of her own.
Though their relationship begins rocky, they eventually get together over their affection for their son, both present and future, and settle down together to have a family. Her greatest trait as a mother isn’t her strength, especially in a series where planet destroying seems to be an everyday occurrence. It is her strength that should be admired, in staying with her family throughout the various disasters despite her relative helplessness. A good mother isn’t a strong mother, but one who protects and loves her children.
9. Mari Katsuragi – The World God Only Knows
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2012 – December 2012
Mari Katsuragi is the mother of Keima Katsuragi and Elsie, though the latter is a fake daughter or an adopted one. She runs the café whilst her husband works overseas, all the while trying to take care of her otaku son who can’t seem to become a useful member of society at all. Mari does her best with what she has, and with a son like Keima, that’s saying plenty.
Unlike most mothers on this list, Mari is decidedly normal, albeit with her own quirks as someone with a past as a gangster. But who said we needed crazy moms to have good moms. Isn’t it better to have an ordinary mom who isn’t off sacrificing herself or with a strange way of taking care of her child? In terms of being a normal mom, Mari feels the role decidedly well.
8. Bell-mère – One Piece
- Episodes: Unknown
- Aired: October 1999 - ???
Bell- mère is a retired marine who has relegated herself to staying on a quiet island with a small peaceful village residing on it. She grows tangerines whilst raising her two adopted children Nami and Nojiko. Meeting them during a raid, she took them back to her village for treatment and insisted that they get theirs before hers. After the fact, she adopted them as she felt a connection to the two.
Despite not having much money, she tried her best to feed the two kids, going so far as to only eat the fruit that she grows to save money. She does this while putting on a brave face, stating that she’s only going on a diet. Alas, nothing lasts forever.
When Arlong and his crew comes knocking, she only has enough to pay for the lives of her two daughters, and declares it to be so. She is shot down on the spot, all the while apologising to Nami and Nojiko that she wished she could have done more. Of course, the two disagree to this day. She is definitely a good mom.
7. Yasuko Takasu – Toradora!
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: October 2008 – March 2009
Yasuko is the single mother of Ryuuji, the protagonist of the series. Initially, it appears like she’s a horrible mother. Ryuuji takes care of all the household chores whilst she comes home late each night and immediately goes to sleep. This is further compounded by her air headedness and childish personality.
The truth, however, is not so simple. Yasuko wishes for Ryuuji to pursue his dreams, so she works two jobs at once so that he can fully concentrate on school. That explains why she’s always late and tired. She even gets upset when he tries to get a part time job because she wants to be able to fully provide for him. With her added guidance and kindness, Yasuko is definitely a great mom for Ryuuji.
6. Akiko Minase - Kanon
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: October 2006 – March 2007
The mother of Nayuki Minase, Akiko is a kind and gentle soul who exudes motherliness to everyone around her. She not only works but upkeeps the household as well. She cooks, cleans and does everything the archetype of a mother is shown to do. Though don’t bother with her jam, it seems to be the stuff of nightmares.
Her most prominent trait is how she treats everyone, in a gentle manner. Despite being put in situations where she should clearly be angered, she doesn’t raise her voice once at all through the entirety of the situation. She even takes in “strays” into her household and takes care of them as if they were her own. What a mom!
5. Hana Kirisaki - Nisekoi
- Episodes: 20
- Aired: January 2014 – May 2014
Hana Kirisaki is the mother of Chitoge Kirisaki. Not all mothers are perfect. Many mothers on this list aren’t either, but their good attributes tend to outshine their flaws, giving them the seemingly perfect appearance. In Hana’s case, she seems more human than anything. And that’s what makes it beautiful.
Is it better to be born good, or to be born evil and become good through sheer will power?
Hana wasn’t born to be a mother. She has great dreams and aspirations and is currently the CEO of multiple corporations throughout the world. Yet, she’s saddled with the responsibility of a child. It is the fact that she manages to work through her inborn traits and manages to care for her child to the extent that she does that makes her a great mom.
4. Hana – Wolf Children
- Episodes: 1
- Aired: July 2012
Hana is the single mother of two children, Ame and Yuki. She met the father of her children during her college years, and eventually fell for him. However, he had kept a secret from her throughout the relationship, that he is the last werewolf alive in existence. Despite that, she still loves him and they go on to have their two kids. However, he dies prematurely, leaving her to take care of two Wolf Children.
The journey of Hana throughout the film is a heart-warming, and heart breaking one. Not only is she a single mother raising two children with barely any work qualifications, she has to raise two wolf children and hide their identities from the populace as well. Combine that with the natural playfulness and rebelliousness of typical children and you have a recipe for disaster. Yet, she still pulls through.
3. Kushina Uzumaki - Naruto
- Episodes: 220
- Aired: October 2002 – February 2007
Kushina Uzumaki is the mother of Naruto Uzumaki and the wife of Minato Namikaze. Though she wasn’t a mother for long, her short tenure as a mother has more than qualified her for a spot on this list. With the Kyuubi released from her seal and being weakened from childbirth, she still finds the strength to defend her child from the strongest tailed beast around with the help of her husband.
She ends up using her own body, along with that of Minato, to shield Naruto’s body from a claw that pierces straight through her. If that wasn’t enough, she seals her SOUL in his body in order to give him guidance with the Kyuubi when the time is right, as well as to provide some of that motherly love that Naruto has lacked throughout his life. There’s giving up your life, but your soul? That takes the cake.
2. Trisha Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Episodes: 64
- Aired: April 2009 – July 2010
Trisha Elric is the mother of Edward and Alphonse Elric and the wife of Van Hohenheim. She was the reprieve sought by Hohenheim in his struggles through his immortal life. She eventually gave him two children, whom she loved to her dying breath. Though he had to leave, he did so with great reluctance. Unfortunately, this was unknown to her and her children.
Despite being left to take care of two kids by herself, she still professes to love her husband, hoping each day that he will return. Eventually, she takes ill but still tries her best to take care of the two kids. She succumbs to the illness and leaves the two children behind. But the kids love her so much that they undergo a forbidden ritual in an attempt to bring her back, losing their body and limbs.
It says a lot about a mother when her children are willing to do all that for her.
1. Sanae Furukawa - clannad
- Episodes: 23
- Aired: October 2007 – March 2008
Sanae Furukawa is the mother of Nagisa Furukawa and the wife of Akio Furukawa. She doesn’t start out as mother of the year. Like all people, she has her flaws, and her greatest was that she valued her work over her child a teensy bit too much. After receiving a wake up call, both she and her husband abandon their ambitions and open a bakery in order to always be close to their child.
Sanae isn’t on this list just for how good she is as a mother but her overall impact on the series as a whole. Without her, most of the positive things in the series couldn’t even come close to happening. Nagisa would still be bed ridden and never meet Tomoya, and a certain daughter would never be reunited with her father. It’s hard to express in words how amazing Sanae is. That’s just the kind of mother that we want on the list.
These are some of the best mothers that we could find throughout the anime universe. They are the ones who will be there for their child through thick and thin, and sometimes that care extends to others around them as well. A good mother can be hard to quantify. Heck, some of these mothers barely got a chance to be a mother in the first place.
In the end, they are good simply because we know that they are good. And that’s enough. Have anyone else in mind you think should be on this list? Leave your suggestions in the comments below.
