If you have read my previous article "What is a Lolita" then you have an idea of what a lolita is in anime. In summary, lolita characters can be those who dress in lolita fashion or the lolita who appeals to the loli-con with a youthful appearance and child-like innocence.
You have probably come across a lolita at least once in an anime. There are so many of them out there, maybe it's hard to spot them. Let me introduce to you my top 10 lolita characters in anime!
10. Aihara Enju (Black Bullet)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: April 2014 - July 2014
Enju is an initiator who is partnered with Rentaro. She inherited blood from Gastrea which allows her to fight against the invaders. Due to her Gastrea blood, Enju has very noticeable crimson yes, but she is able to hide the color with the help of Rentaro.
At first, I found Enju to be grating on my nerves. She has an infatuation over Rentaro and spends a lot of her time confessing her love. However, Enju becomes more loveable, in my opinion, as the series progresses. You see how much she cares for her human friends despite their opposition to her existence, and Enju has a love for mankind as she is willing to put her life on the line for their sake. Although Enju has wavered before, she still continues to persevere, determined to live a happy life no matter what life throws at her. She maintains her childlike innocence which puts her on my list of top lolitas!
9. Touwa Erio (Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2011 - July 2011
Erio is the cute little cousin of the main character, Makoto, who believes in aliens. She went missing for a long period of time with no memory of what actually occurred during her disappearance. When Erio is not running around wrapped up in a futon, she is dreaming of outer space and trying to fly. Erio really makes life more interesting.
Although she is very open with her strangeness, Erio is actually quite shy. She has such an adorable face, though, that I can't believe people avoided her. Especially considering all the weirdos in that town. Even wrapped in a futon, Erio is still very cute since she has maintained her child-like innocence even in the face of discrimination. How could you not love her?
8. Elizabeth Midford (Kuroshitsuji)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: October 2008 - March 2009
Elizabeth is the fiance of Ciel in Kuroshitsuji. Much like Ciel and his Ouji fashion, Elizabeth dresses in gothic lolita clothing throughout the anime as well as its sequel. Elizabeth is very pure in nature despite her fiance's antics with the underground. She will do anything to make Ciel happy.
Truly, I think it's hard to hate Elizabeth. Although she does cling to Ciel, she doesn't have that grating personality that Misa from Death Note has. Even though so many dark things happen around Elizabeth, she still remains cheerful and bright, while continuing to do everything for Ciel's sake. Elizabeth, or Liz as Ciel refers to her, is a wonderful blend of both the little girl lolita and lolita fashion. She is a great moe character for loli-cons!
7. Irisu Makina (Grisaia no Kajitsu)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: October 2014 - December 2013
What do you do when an adorable little girl looks up to you with playful doe eyes and calls you "Papa"? Doesn't it just melt your heart? Makina is the cute lolita in Grisaia no Kajitsu, but unlike other lolitas in harem anime, she doesn't grate on my nerves with her little girl attitude since she isn't overly clingy or whiney. She actually acts like a carefree little girl.
Although Makina's past and present history aren't bright, she maintains her bright personality and carefree attitude. All she cares about is having fun! My favorite part about her? Her ability to aim a sniper rifle! She definitely likes to have fun, but Makina also makes a good subordinate or soldier considering how well she can take orders. Makina would make such a cute soldier, too!
6. Kinomoto Sakura (CardCaptor Sakura)
- Episodes: 70
- Aired: April 1998 - March 2000
CardCaptor Sakura brings back fond memories, doesn't it? Who could forget CLAMP's adorable Kinomoto Sakura who released the Clow Cards upon Japan and worked so hard to get them back? Sakura was the baby faced heroine who was always wearing adorable outfits while out on her adventures, and trying so hard to keep her friends and family happy.
With so many secrets being kept from her, Sakura still continued to work hard and experience many life events along the way. She was so strong and caring, how could a child not want to be Sakura? I'm sure many people took up rollerblading because of her! Sakura is the little girl trendsetter of 90s anime!
5. Maaka Anju (Karin)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: November 2005 - May 2006
Anju is the little sister Karin. She is a doting little sister who can't stop attempting to protect her big sister. Anju is one of my favorite lolitas! It might be that she's part vampire who has a preference for the blood of the jealous or that she dresses in gothic lolita clothing. It could be because she's one of the few who dresses in white gothic lolita fashion rather than just black. Or maybe it's the fact that she carries around the doll possessed by the soul of an ax murderer. Regardless, Anju is a pretty awesome lolita.
Unlike other lolita types, Anju doesn't have the bright personality, but I still think of her as a lolita due to her big sister complex. Much like K-On's Hirasawa Ui, Anju takes care of her hopeless big sister, and when she is no longer able to take care of Karin, Anju reverts back to a little girl while she grieves her loss. I love Anju. She may seem dark and intimidating, but she does have a good heart.
4. Takanashi Rikka (Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai!)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2012 - December 2012
Rikka is an adorable high school student with 8th grade syndrome, which allows her to believe she has powers that others would not normally have. Despite being 16 years old, I find Rikka quite adorable especially when she tries not to reveal the Tyrant's Eye.
Whether or not you care for 8th grade syndrome or not, you will still find something to love about Rikka. She still holds onto her childlike innocence and bright personality. Her 8th grade syndrome just makes her more interesting, in my opinion. Rikka really just brings out your inner child, which is something a lot of us lose.
3. Akatsuki (Log Horizon I & II)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: October 2013 - March 2014
Like Anju, Akatsuki isn't your normal lolita. She doesn't wear lolita fashions or have a bright, cutesy personality. Instead, she is Shiroe's right hand, baby-faced kunoichi. Akatsuki is a combination of a lolita and a kuudere! On the outside, she may seem cold and very quiet, but when it comes to Shiroe, she is very protective and will do anything within her power to ensure that he is OK.
I like Akatsuki for her kunoichi abilities without the emotional side that the kunoichi in Naruto seem to have. That is not to say that Akatsuki doesn't have emotions, but for the most part, she does remain calm. Akatsuki is always trying to grow and train. She is never satisfied with as is. That's what makes her a great warrior. Her power coupled with her small size makes Akatsuki a threat to the other guilds!
2. Celestia Ludenberg (Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei The Animation)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2013 - September 2013
Celestia is the gothic lolita dressed student of Hope's Peak Academy's 78th class. There are so many different ways to describe Celestia. My initial impression is that she's kind of psycho, but strangely enough, she is able to maintain her composure during most circumstances. Celestia is the ultimate gambler in the school which gave her the skills to gain the title, "Queen of Liars."
Yes, I did call her psycho, but I also think she is one of the top lolitas in anime. Celestia is a strong contender in the Mutual Killing Incident of the 78th Class. She continues to act properly, but my favorite times are when she loses her temper and becomes a monster. Celestia is fairly clever, too, when orchestrating her plan and quite deceitful. Were you fooled by her act? Regardless, Celestia does fight hard for her dreams, although I do think her dream is a little funny. She's definitely one of a kind.
1. Hildegarde (Beelzebub)
- Episodes: 60
- Aired: January 2011 - March 2012
Although I seem to be in a love-hate situation over baby Beel, I do like Hildegarde from Beelzebub. She is the gothic lolita clad demon wet nurse that takes care of baby Beel. I do like Hildegarde because unlike other anime, she's not the tsundere that secretly pines over the male lead. She merely cares for Beel and wants to ensure that he grows up to be the demon lord that he is destined to be.
Hildegarde dresses in very proper lolita fashion without exposing too much skin, although technically, her skirt is too short, but can't blame animators for wanting to increase fan service. Hildegarde is no damsel in distress either. She is a strong demon who can wipe the floor clean with her enemies! And that's without losing her temper!
Now, I have given you a list of my top 10 lolitas in anime. What do you think? Do you prefer girls in lolita fashion or the lolitas that appeal to loli-cons? Who's your favorite? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
