Dozens of anime characters are famous for having a flashy, unnatural hair color. Of all the colors in the rainbow, purple is probably one of the last you’d expect to find on someone’s hair. Purple is such a rare color that it’s seldom found in nature (only few flowers, stones and shellfish are naturally purple). Due to its rarity, it was used in ancient times mostly by royalty and the nobility.
It’s no surprise then, that this color is so connected to royalty, uniqueness and power. The purple color is so rare that it’s shrouded in mystery, often carrying some magic or supernatural connotation. On this list, we’ll show you some of the rare and unique specimens who wear such lively color on their heads. We give you our Top 10 Purple Haired Anime Characters!
10. Atsushi Murasakibara from Kuroko no Basket/Kuroko’s Basketball
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Apr 2012 – Sep 2012
As I said, purple mostly means unique, supernatural and powerful. These words describe Yosen’s big man pretty well. Murasakibara is the colossal center of the famous Generation of Miracles and very likely, the most dominant player in the game. He’s a 6’10” (208cm) tall beast with enough power to dunk over three defensive players.
Unstoppable as he is on the offensive end, this amethyst haired demon is impeccable on defense. We’re talking about a man that’s so big he can guard the whole area inside the three point perimeter, getting to block anyone who dares to shoot from inside the arc. His supernatural size and power make Murasakibara a one-of-a-kind player.
9. Minene Uryuu from Mirai Nikki/Future Diary
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: Oct 2011 – Apr 2012
On our 9th spot we find our beloved 9th future diary holder. Her dark violet hair symbolizes power, ambition, grandeur, and of course pride as well. Uryuu Minene is a cold blooded psychotic criminal who’s willing to do anything to realize her ambition of becoming the new God. She makes her debut on Mirai Nikki blowing up half of the school to lure Yuki and Yuno out and kill them.
Her Escape Diary makes her a real survivor and her feisty nature is what keeps her as one of the last contestants standing on the Survival Game. Deep down she is feminine and romantic though, as we can see by the end of the show that she has a soft spot for detective Masumi Nishijima.
She can also use some powerful magic by the end of the show. Clearly, if anyone was going to be given magical powers it had to be the one with purple hair…
8. Rize Kamishiro from Tokyo Ghoul
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul 2014 – Sep 2014
We’ve already discussed how the purple color is covered in mystery and symbolizes supernatural qualities. Well, what’s more supernatural than becoming a flesh eating demon after receiving the organs of a ghoul? I’ll tell you what; realizing that part of that creature is living inside of you, instigating you to murder and eat living people.
We got to the sexiest and most terrifying demon girl in Tokyo and on our list. She’s a babe of a demon with big breasts and a most delicate orchid purple hair. Her refined beauty and femininity can only be surpassed by her power and her thirst for blood. It’s a shame that she dies so early in the show. Fortunately, we can still see her from time to time taking control of Kaneki’s mind.
Damn you Kaneki! I wish Rize would eat me alive too!
7. Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: Apr 1998 – Apr 1999
The Queen of Hearts was in no way going to be out of our list. This unbelievably hot thief from space lands on our 7th spot showing off her eggplant (yup, that’s a shade of purple) short hair. Her story is really cool; she woke up after a 54-year cryogenic coma with a big hospital debt, which is why she keeps cheating, seducing, stealing and gambling her way in life.
Purple has a lot to do with femininity, delicacy, beauty and gracefulness. Faye possesses all of those qualities and exploits them to always get what she wants. She is hard to trust but no one can deny she is one hell of a woman.
6. Hiiragi Kagami from Lucky Star!
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Apr 2007 – Sep 2007
Kagami-sama had to be on our list for many reasons. Well, just one; she’s just so kawaii. I can’t possibly think of another purple haired cutie as adorable as Kagami (except maybe for her twin sister, of course). Her lilac hair symbolizes her femininity, her gracefulness, her delicacy, but most of all her pomposity.
Kagami is known for being quite vain and shallow, often worrying for having one or two extra pounds. She is the tsundere in the group and as such, she always hides her feelings. Deep down she’s very fond of her friends and she can be really sweet.
5. Kotomi Ichinose from Clannad
- Episodes: 23
- Aired: Oct 2007 – Mar 2008
Kotomi-chan is our favorite purple haired geek and a virtuous violin player. Actually, every time she plays, anyone who’s listening to her ends up rolling on the floor and having ear damage. She is extremely shy and fearful (of bullies mostly) but she excels in all things academic, which makes her so mysterious.
Kotomi’s hair is among the darkest shades of purple, meaning probably mourning, since she lost her parents in a plane crash. As a result, Kotomi grew up as a solitary and gloomy teenage girl, often preferring the company of books to that of her schoolmates. She’s so pure and innocent though, so I find her totally adorable.
4. Blair from Soul Eater
- Episodes: 51
- Aired: Apr 2008 – Mar 2009
Blair is one hot kitten who knows what she’s got. She can turn into a kitty and manipulate magic but those aren’t her deadliest weapons. Her greatest strength, to me at least, is her looks. This violet haired babe uses her sex appeal to her own benefit or just to tease men.
With her big breasts and her witch outfit that leaves little to the imagination, she’s got men bleeding out their noses. She has no problems in showing herself naked in front of men either, often causing the funniest reactions and situations. She’s definitely got a lot of purple in her, since she is so feminine and an avid magic user.
3. Nakamura Yuri from Angel Beats!
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Apr 2010 – Jun 2010
This magenta haired girl is the founder and leader of the afterlife school organization, Afterlife War Front. Her colorful and lively hair color reflects the charismatic leader she is but also how cold and logical she can be in difficult situations. She is so determined that she does not hesitate to take risks or make sacrifices if necessary.
She can be playful at times but she would give her life (so to speak) for any of her subordinates. Even if it means suicide, she is willing to fight alone to protect those whom she loves. The “Purple Heart” for bravery should definitely go for Yuri.
2. Busujima Saeko from Highschool of the Dead
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul 2010 – Sep 2010
On number 2, we finally get to our sweet Saeko from HOTD. As her dark, bluish hair indicates, she has good judgment; she’s very calmed and down to earth. She’s the captain of the Kendo Club at Fujimi High School and, as such, the most powerful survival resource to Komuro’s group. She kicks zombie ass with her wooden sword and still look beautiful while she does it.
Saeko is the bravest of all the hot girls led by Komuro. She’s not afraid of fighting at a sword of distance between the undead and herself. She’s definitely got the whole package, boobs and zombie-ass-kicking ability. No wonder why Saeko is, to many of us, our favorite girl from HOTD.
1. Trunks from Dragon Ball Z
- Episodes: 291
- Aired: Apr 1989 – Jan 1996
The color favored by kings, emperors and royalty in general has been the color purple for centuries. We couldn’t have expected any other hair color for the son of a Saiyan prince. Trunks is the son of the proud Saiyan warrior Vegeta and the human Bulma.
He is one of the most overpowered characters in the DBZ saga when he makes his debut, making sushi out of Frieza and King Cold. He is also the second Super Saiyan we get to see, which starts to make things a bit more complex in the DB universe.
As his lavender hair implies, he is lighthearted and calmed, though he is also quite powerful as one of the strongest Saiyans, so try not to make him angry. Purple is also the color of mourning, which may be reflected on the horrors of Trunks’ alternate future, where he’s the last one of the Z warriors. God, he’s just so epic!
Even though purple is one of the rarest hair colors in anime, I bet you’d be quite surprised to know how many epic and memorable purple haired characters we can find. Just to name a few legends who were left out of our list, we have Saori Kido (Saint Seiya), James from Team Rocket (Pokémon), Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell), Mizore Shirayuki (Rosario to Vampire), Yoruichi (Bleach) and Dark (DNAngel).
As the purple on their heads imply, they are all every bit as special and unique as those who are on our list. We honor them with this special mention. All of them look so great with that hair color that it makes me want to give it a try and just dye my hair magenta. Then again, I don’t think I can pull it off like any of these characters.
You can go ahead and tell us which is your favorite purple haired character and if you recall another one who hasn’t been mentioned. It’s not an easy task, I’m telling you 😉
