The most valuable weapon in any war is information. Both the information that your enemy doesn’t have, or the information you manage to get from your enemy. Many times, a battle is decided depending who has more knowledge, files and plans. Which is why Spies are a vital part for any army.

A good spy is one who can blend into the enemy field without calling attention to their actions, and is smart and capable enough to escape to take the information to his superiors when it’s needed. They can pretend to be friends, or even allies of their enemy if that’s what it takes, which may end up in some broken hearts. Still, they only care about their duty.

So here are 10 anime spies who have gone above and beyond their duty to their superiors.

10. Rolo Lamperouge from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Apr 2008 – Sep 2008

Rolo Lamperouge started working as an assassin since he was six years old. As he also was a Geass user, he was quickly put under the orders of the Britannian Secret Intelligence Service, as part of the many agents who kept watch on the amnesiac Lelouch. In this capacity, he has been assigned to pretend to be Lelouch’s younger brother, a role he plays like a professional actor.

Unfortunately for Rolo, what made his fake identity work was Lelouch’s amnesia. Once Lelouch’s memories come back, he realizes that Rolo is not really his brother and here is when the real spy work begins for the young assassin. Although at first he is still loyal to Britannia, soon he changes sides and swears loyalty to Lelouch when he saves his life. And thus, he starts working as a double agent, helping Lelouch to maintain his secret identity as the Rebel leader, Zero.

As a spy and an assassin, Rolo has to make many hard choices, including killing some of his allies in order to protect his mission. He doesn’t blink when he does that, as killing is second nature to him. Also, while he has a very powerful Geas that stops time around his opponent, this has the side effect of stopping his heart for a second, which makes it dangerous to use. Still, he is very dedicated, and good at keeping secrets and that alone, helps him to get the tenth spot on this list.

9. Delilah from Gate (Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul 2015 - Sep 2015

After her kingdom was invaded, the Warrior Bunny Delilah refused to become a slave to the invaders and escaped with her best friends. After running for a long time, she was invited to the Clan Formal and the Kingdom of Italica, where she started working as a maid. And when Japan connected with Italica, she was one of the selected few sent to spy on Japanese people, in order to have enough information of the world, in order to work the treaties between Japan and the Kingdom of Italica.

To be able to do her job, Delilah becomes a waitress in a restaurant near the incident zone and soon is pretty much assimilated into the Japanese culture, always keeping her superiors informed of what is happening. Unfortunately for her, that also meant that she was not completely aware of the power plays in Italica, much less of the advance of spies from her own former Queen.

Despite these shortcomings, Delilah is a fierce warrior and a charismatic woman. This won her the hearts of all her clients at the restaurant, and made her job a lot easier, giving her the ninth place of the list.

8. Loran Cehack from Turn A Gundam

  • Episodes: 50
  • Aired: Apr 1999 - Apr 2000

Loran Cehack is one of the few in this list who didn’t start out wanting to be a spy. When he lived in his native moon, he was a peaceful fisherman who only wanted to live in peace. However, he was chosen by his government as part of a group of scouts who would go to Earth and learn to live with the inhabitants, in preparation for the War.

It took him two years, but Loran managed to make the people of Earth accept him as a native. Without any military training from his home planet, he was allowed to become a Gundam Pilot for Earth. This constantly puts him in direct conflict with his native Moon forces, and as a double agent in the eighth spot.

7. Five from Terror in Resonance (Zankyou no Terror)

  • Episodes: 11
  • Aired: Jul 2014 - Sep 2014

Five is part of a special section of the FBI, charged with an investigation of terrorist attacks in Japan. She is highly intelligent, and very fond of psychological games like chess. This is why she has been considered a very competent anti-terrorist agent, and the best agent to deal with the terrorist attacks in Japan.

However, as with many spies, that is only part of her real story. The truth is that she was raised as part of an Institution with many other talented kids. And so, her trip to Japan is not to help the country with the terrorists, but to face said terrorists on her own terms. This makes her a very special spy, one who is not working really for the government, but for herself, and earns her place seven in the list.

6. Arthur Lynch from Legend of Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu)

  • Episodes: 10
  • Aired: Jan 1988 – Mar 1997

Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch of the Free Planet Alliance didn’t have an easy life. He was stationed in the El Facil star zone when the war broke out and thus ended as a war prisoner of the Galactic Empire. Due to his hard choices during the war, his fellow prisoners shunned him; this led him to survive in solitary for several years, growing more disenchanted with the Alliance. This made him the perfect candidate when Reinhard Von Lonhengarmm, Supreme Fleet Admiral of the Galactic Empire, decided to fake a prisoner exchange to spy on the Alliance..

Lynch was a perfect mole: during the war he had abandoned civilians at El Facil, and he resented the way in which the other Alliance soldiers had abandoned him in the POW camp. So he was willing to betray his former allies as a form of revenge. He was ready to find enough officers in the Alliance army who were ready to create a military coup to keep the Alliance weakened. Due to his cruelty and the perfect way in which he executed Lonhengramm’s orders, Arthur Lynch is sixth in our list.

5. Milia Fallyna Jenius from Macross

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Oct 1982 – Jun 1983

Milia (Mirilla for those who watched Robotech) started her military career as a pilot for the Zentraedi, the giant race that was trying to get the SDF-1 back. She was the best pilot in the force, and had never been defeated until one mysterious human pilot bested her. After that defeat, she decided to volunteer to spy on the humans, by submitting to a process of micronization to be human size.

While we don’t know much about how Milia managed to infiltrate human society, the truth is that she did it much better than the other Zentraedi spies. She managed to be accepted as a human and found her target, Maximilian Jenius. As he beat her again, this time in a videogame, Milia fell in love and became one of the first Zentradi to defect to the humans, becoming an important part of the eventual human victory.

While falling in love with your target is not the best idea for a spy, the fact that Milia managed to successfully infiltrate a completely alien culture is what makes her a perfect candidate for the fifth spot.

4. Taichi Hiraga-Keaton from Master Keaton

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Oct 1998 – Mar 1999

Originally an archeology student, Keaton joined the British Army shortly after his divorce from his first wife and became a member of the SAS. Shortly after the Iranian Embassy incident, he became an insurance investigator with his own firm in London, but that was thanks to the different methods of investigation he developed as an Intelligence agent for the British Army.

As Keaton doesn’t work exclusively for the government, he has some abilities that other spies don’t have. He is an amazing archeologist, and also has an extensive knowledge of botany and zoology thanks to his parents. And thanks to his analytical mind and his personal combat experience, he is an unexpected spy, as he can pass undetected through many places. This gives him spot number four.

3. Mylene Hoffman from 009-1

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2006 – Dec 2006

Mylene was a war orphan taken in by the Western Bloc. After many years of training, and numerous surgeries, she became part of the Nine Number Group of the Zero Zero organization. As a spy and secret agent, Mylene has many weapons within her body that allow her to do her work with more efficiency than a human spy would. Among her weapons, she has communicator earrings, a hidden needle gun in her boots, and bio bullets that shoot from her breasts.

But what makes Mylene stand out from the Nine Number Group is that unlike the others, she was trained from childhood in many martial arts, strategy and tactics. This makes her the best of her group, and earned her both the code name Muse, as well as the third place in this list.

2. Fukumoto from Joker Game

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr 2016 – Jun 2016

Appearances can be deceiving. Fukumoto, at first, seems like a goofy and quiet man but in truth, is one of the most efficient agents under Lt. Colonel Yuuki. He is also the best cook in the unit, and one of the few that handles having more than one identity at the same time.

Completely devoted to the secrecy of his mission, Fukumoto often employs different means to achieve his missions. One of those is to manipulate other agents and policemen with small clues to let them “solve” cases, which are of interest to Japan’s Empire.

Although he chooses to stay in the city of Shangai, seduced by the betrayal and intrigue in the city, he remained faithful to the Lt. Colonel and the Emperor until the end of the war. This makes him one of the most successful spies in this list, and earns him the second place.

What makes Aikuro such a great spy is not only his incredibly ability to meld with the Academy faculty. No, it is his quick thinking and how he manages to hold on to his very flamboyant personality in order to remain hidden from the all-powerful Honnouji Academy Student Council. Not only that, he managed to get enough information on the Life Fibers to rival the discoveries of the original scientist who experimented on the sentient clothing. And for that, and for his impressive control to avoid flashing everyone he meets, he gets the number one spot.

Final Thoughts

Spies live for finding information. Some of them can even die in the name of the mission, without regrets. And this is why they make such interesting characters, because they make us doubt what side they are on, and whom they are working for with every line they say.

Do you agree? If you think we missed one great spy or maybe some of our choices didn’t deserve their spot, please let us know in the comments below.
