Top 10 Strongest Fullmetal Alchemist Characters

“Alchemy is a science where one understands the structure of matter, breaks it down, then rebuilds it. However, it is not an all-powerful technique, as one cannot create something out of nothing. If one wishes to gain something, one must present something of equal value. This is the concept of equivalent exchange, the fundamental basis of alchemy. However, there is a taboo in alchemy. Human transmutation. One must not commit this act.”

Fullmetal Alchemist has been regarded as one of the most favorable anime by many. The characters appeared in the anime doesn’t seem to lack uniqueness as they each have their own appealing traits and characteristics as well as their abilities and powers. So here’s a list of top 10 strongest Fullmetal Alchemist characters


10. Scar

After sustaining heavy injury during the Ishvalan Civil War and survived, Scar was hell-bent on getting revenge by targeting and killing of State Alchemists. His real name was never revealed on the series. In episode 64 “Journey’s End”, Scar claimed to have forsaken his real name when Olivier Armstrong asked of his real name.

Having distinctive trademarks of an Ishvalan; dark skinned and red eyes, Scar wears sunglasses to disguise himself and went on a killing spree targeting State Alchemists. Scar proved his formidable abilities by killing off 10 State Alchemists, one of which happens to be known as a combat specialist and later in the series was able to defeat a severely injured King Bradley (Wrath).


9. Lan Fan

Lan Fan is the loyal female bodyguard of the Xing Empire’s Yao Clan Prince, Ling Yao. Lan Fan, together with her grandfather Fu, was often seen shadowing Ling Yao, guarding him make sure he doesn’t wander off and cause trouble. Being a trusted and loyal bodyguard, Lan Fan have a very particular set of skills, ranging from hand-to-hand combat to explosives.

In episode 23 “Girl on the Battlefield”, Lan Fan together with Ling was able to escape King Bradley by severing her arm to create a decoy and mislead Bradley, this action showcases her resourcefulness on the battlefield. Later in episode 47 “Emissary of Darkness”, Lan Fan returns with a blade-arm automail and severely lacerate Gluttony disabling him before he could even react.


8. Olivier Armstrong

Olivier Mira Armstrong is a family member of the Armstrong family. In charge at the northern border at Fort Briggs, Olivier earned the title as the “Ice Queen” or the “Northern Wall of Briggs” due to her firm sense of command and leadership as well as her cold demeanor towards her enemies. She truly believes in the “survival of the fittest” and will not tolerate anyone who does not live up to her standards, making her a force to be reckoned with.

Despite being a female military, Olivier is considered to be one of the strongest female characters in the Fullmetal Alchemist series. As seen in episode 45 "The Promised Day", Olivier requested that her father retires and leave the country and let her inherit the family instead of her brother, Alex Armstrong. Philip Gargantos Armstrong, the father of the two then proposed a duel between them, and the winner shall become the family heir. Olivier won the duel easily against her brother despite the fact that Alex’s muscular body was immensely bigger than Olivier.


7. Izumi Curtis

Izumi Curtis is a well-skilled hand to hand combat alchemist. As a result of having her internal organs taken as a toll for the human transmutation she did for her baby, Izumi is frequently seen vomiting blood randomly. Despite that, Izumi has proven to be a praise-worthy alchemist, having both the protagonist Edward and Alphonse Elric begged her for apprenticeship.

It is referred throughout the series that Izumi Curtis was the mysterious woman that attacked the Briggs patrol units and stole their flood supply when she was sent to train in the northern region of Briggs Mountain. Izumi Curtis usually introduced herself as only a passing housewife, but on episode 54 “Beyond the Inferno” when Izumi came to Central to participate in the coup d'état, she introduced herself as an alchemist.


6. Greed/Ling Yao

Ling Yao is the twelfth prince of the Yao clan of Xing nation. Ling Yao travelled to Amestris in hopes to obtain the philosopher’s stone and become the emperor of Xing. Ling later obtained the philosopher’s stone and in it he obtained Greed granting the power of the Ultimate Shield, a power which can cover his body in carbon of the highest density, making him indestructible.

Despite his small stature, Ling has incredible strength and expert skills in swordsmanship as he was able to fend off King Bradley himself. In episode 23 “Girl on the Battlefield”, it was seen that Ling was able to single-handedly disable Gluttony and lift him up demonstrating his strength.



5. Roy Mustang

Roy Mustang or Colonel Mustang is a State Alchemist that is also known as the “Flame Alchemist”. After receiving mentorship from Berthold Hawkeye, father of Riza Hawkeye, Roy Mustang mastered the arts of Flame Alchemy. It is seen throughout the series, Mustang uses a special white glove that acts as a flint when he snaps his fingers to create flame making him one of the strongest alchemist in the series.

After the death of his best friend Maes Hughes, Roy became determined to uncover the truth behind Hughes’ death. In episode 19 "Death of the Undying", Roy Mustang was able to kill Lust by burning her to death. On a later occasion of episode 53 “Flame of Vengeance”, Roy Mustang was enraged after learning that Envy had killed Maes Hughes and was able to easily defeat Envy and deplete his philosopher’s stone and revert back to his parasitic form.


4. Pride

Pride is the first and eldest of the Homunculus that was created by Father (The Dwarf in the Flask). Despite his real age, Pride takes a human-child appearance form of Selim Bradley, the son of King Bradley. Pride was granted the power over controlling shadows and able to manipulate them to severely decapitate anyone who crosses his path.

Pride is also able to devour others and gain their physical traits. As seen in episode 48 “The Oath in the Tunnel”, Pride consumes Gluttony to replenish his philosopher’s stone and gain Gluttony’s acute sense of smell. Despite his fearsome abilities, Pride can’t utilize his powers in total darkness since there can be no shadow. This was seen in episode 49 “Filial Affection” where Hohenheim made a dome to trap both Alphonse and Pride inside, rendering Pride’s powers useless.


3. King Bradley - Wrath

King Bradley or Führer of Amestris is a human-based Homunculus that was able to age like a normal human and still able to wield the power of the Homunculus, the Ultimate Eye. Bradley always wears an eye patch to conceal his unique abilities, of which when unleashed can grant him superior eyesight that enables him to dodge any incoming attacks.

Bradley first started out as a potential candidate to be the next Führer. Through extreme and intense training, Bradley was exceptionally skilled when it comes to swordsmanship making him one of the strongest characters in the anime. As seen in episode 56 “The Return of the Fuhrer”, King Bradley was able to easily slice through a cannon shell in half and dodge incoming bullets.


2. Hohenheim

Hohenheim, the mysterious father of both protagonists Edward and Alphonse Elric. Early in his days, Van Hohenheim is a numbered house slave of a renowned alchemist in Xerxes. He was referred to as “Slave no. 23”. After discovering a Homunculus in a flask, the Homunculus gave him a new name, Van Hohenheim and taught him various knowledge regarding alchemy.

After some turn of events, the Homunculus in the flask tricked the King of Xerxes and sacrificed the entire country of Xerxes to create eternal life and a never-aging body for both Hohenheim and the Homunculus himself. This explains why Father (Homunculus in the flask) has an uncanny resemblance of appearance to Hohenheim.


1. Father (Homunculus)

Father or “the Dwarf in the flask” is the main antagonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. After sacrificing the entire country of Xerxes, the Dwarf in the flask was able to escape from his glass prison and was able take in the form of a human that bears a striking resemblance to Hohenheim. Having the powers of more than half a million souls in his body, “the Dwarf in the flask” decides to create 7 more Homunculus; Pride, Wrath, Sloth, Lust, Greed, Envy, Gluttony and takes on a paternal figure known as “Father”.

After the successful experiment in Xerxes, Father wants to recreate the same event and open a nationwide gate of truth and swallow the entity beyond it that grants him the power of God himself. It was shown in the series that he was able to recreate the sun at the palm of his hands with ease.
