Top 10 Unhealthy Habits Anime Characters Have

By now, many of us anime fans—especially us at Honey’s Anime—have learned a very intriguing thing about anime. There are a multitude of realistic real-world elements that appear in anime. School, for example, can be tough and equally lead to romance or heartbreak. Jobs can be tough to deal with when you love anime or games, something seen in the recently airing anime Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii. Ultimately, anime and real life can correlate in so many ways it’s kind of fascinating.

Unfortunately, while anime does capture a lot of real-world situations, it also captures real-world problems. Case in point, bad habits we humans have. Anime creators and writers often try to make characters that mirror people on the outside world in some shape or form. This also means it mirrors some of our bad habits that we as humans can have. Let us see some of these bad habits in our article the Top 10 Unhealthy Habits Anime Characters Have.

10. Tanaka from Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge (Laziness)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Apr, 2016- Jun, 2016

Here at Honey’s Anime, we understand being lazy and that desire to spend all day doing nothing. Sometimes, we feel we earn the right to be lazy as we work pretty hard! However, we know that being lazy gets nothing accomplished and thus, being lazy needs to be kept to days off or when we’re sick. Tanaka from Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge though isn’t just lazy at home or at school…Tanaka is lazy 24/7!

When we watched Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge when it aired back in 2016, we laughed at Tanaka but also felt bad for his friend Oota. Literally, Oota needed to carry Tanaka because the guy was unable to move around due to his laziness. Don’t be Tanaka, readers out there on the web. Laziness is fine once in a while, but being so lazy that you legit need to be carried around like a bag of rice is a scary thing.

9. Tatsumi Oga from Beelzebub (Constant Brawler)

  • Episodes: 60
  • Air Date: Jan, 2011- Mar, 2012

School can be quite daunting and sometimes scary. Not only do most have to worry about tests, getting a girlfriend or boyfriend and surviving constant morning to late afternoon schedules, but school also has a lot of bullies sometimes. There are many who won’t let bullies have their way and will get into fights left and right to prove their toughness. Sure, this is a good way to be seen as tough—though we aren’t advocating fighting in anyway or form—but it can also be seen as just an unhealthy habit. Look at Tatsumi Oga from Beelzebub, for example. Instead of sometimes letting his fist just relax, Tatsumi tends to almost seek a fight.
Now we do understand that Tatsumi does sometimes have to fight in Beelzebub, after all, he is protecting the devil’s son, but Tatsumi almost enjoys fighting a bit too much. This can be seen as an extremely unhealthy habit no matter how you look at it. Seeking fights in the real world will lead to numerous problems such as getting hurt or possibly in trouble at school or at work. If you want to fight so badly, join boxing and/or some fighting sport. Don’t be like Tatsumi and walk around habitually hoping to test your fighting skills.

8. Brock from Pokémon (Womanizing)

  • Episodes: 276
  • Air Date: Apr, 1997- Nov, 2002

Pokémon is one of those anime we grew up with as kids and still love even as adults. There’s a true love to trying to continue the series and showing that we haven’t stopped loving Ash and his Pokémon companions. Now outside of Ash, Pikachu and Misty was another popular face in the form of the Earth Gym Leader Brock. Who didn’t love Brock and his love for Pokémon and occasional wisdom? Well, maybe the girls Brock would constantly flirt with in the Pokémon series.

While a lot of anime characters can be known for what is called womanizing, Brock was easily one of the earliest examples of how not to act with a girl you like. There’s nothing wrong with trying to smooth talk a girl to hopefully get her number and maybe a date. However, Brock took it to the levels where he would flirt with literally every girl he ran across and be extremely annoying about it. Womanizing is a pretty bad habit to have, readers out there. You’ll tend to mirror Brock and his failures in getting girls if you follow this unhealthy action.

7. Kazuto Kirigaya from Sword Art Online (Gaming Addict)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Air Date: Jul, 2012- Dec, 2012

Kazuto Kirigaya, better known by his gamer name Kirito, is easily one of the coolest dudes in the world of Sword Art Online. Kirito literally saved thousands of lives by using his impressive gaming skills. Those who love games see Kirito as being a hero because he’s someone who used his die-hard love of games as a tool to save the day. Honestly, we don’t disagree as this is what we love about Kirito in Sword Art Online here at Honey’s Anime. Though, don’t you think Kirito might love games a bit too much?

After surviving the terrible Sword Art Online incident and then saving his girlfriend from being trapped in ALFheim Online—the second arc of Sword Art Online—don’t you think Kirito would put down his controller and NerveGear once and for all? No, instead Kazuto Kirigaya continues playing games which involves him in more dangerous situations and just shows an unhealthy habit of being someone a bit too into the gaming world. Gaming is something we do a lot here at Honey’s Anime—we mean a lot—but we also play games in moderation, too. Maybe don’t be too much like Kirito and realize that there are other hobbies to enjoy besides spending your waking life in a video game even when you’re not trapped in it.

6. Gintoki Sakata from Gintama (Nose Picker)

  • Episodes: 201
  • Air Date: Apr, 2006- Mar, 2010

Most kids learn about a very unhealthy habit at an early age, nose picking. Besides just being down right gross, nose picking is unsanitary. Often, we here at Honey’s Anime run into real people picking their nose at a bus stop or in their cars thinking no one can see. Nose picking isn’t a criminal offense—though it should be—but it’s down right nasty and shouldn’t be done once you get past the age of 3 or 4. However, Gintoki Sakata from the legendary Gintama series, seems to have not learned to break this unhealthy habit.

That’s right, readers. If you aren’t a fan of Gintama—which you should check it out—you probably don’t realize that the main man himself is a perpetual nose picker all throughout the series. While we know some of you might find this hard to believe, we have a simple remedy to prove we aren’t fibbing about Gintoki’s annoying unhealthy habit. Go on google right now—well, after reading the rest of our Top 10 Unhealthy Habits Anime Characters Have article—and search Gintoki picking nose. Trust us, you’re going to be amazed at how many images show up. Gintoki…please grab a tissue man, nose picking isn’t a good habit to have.

5. Tsunade from Naruto (Heavy Drinker)

  • Episodes: 220
  • Air Date: Oct, 2002- Feb, 2007

The Naruto series is easily one of the most beloved shounen anime ever made. Not only is Naruto filled with some cool characters, epic battles and insanely cool animation, it is also enjoyable from beginning to end. Naruto also, unfortunately, has characters that have some of the worst habits seen in the anime world. From some who show a bit too much skin too often to those who eat horribly—looking at you, Naruto, and your diet of ramen—the list of bad habits in Naruto could take up our entire article. However, there is one specific unhealthy habit that takes the cake in the world of Naruto and it’s those who partake a bit too much in drinking.

Now you might be wondering who is the heavier drinker in Naruto? Is it perhaps Jiraiya? No, the one who wins hands down—if it wasn’t obvious from the number entry—is Tsunade. There are a multitude of Naruto episodes that have Tsunade and her large oppai self plastered with tons of alcoholic beverages around her. Tsunade might kick butt and take names, but she also knows how to down alcohol just as much as the big boys. Tsunade best be careful that her next big battle doesn’t end up being with liver issues due to her unhealthy habit.

4. Lupin from Lupin III (Thief)

  • Episodes: 23
  • Air Date: Oct, 1971- Mar, 1972

Bad habits, as we’ve displayed so far, can come in many forms. Some honestly are just bad habits that lead to a slap on the wrist from a teacher or maybe a parent. Though there are some bad habits that can lead to criminal consequences. Easily one of these bad habits comes from a famous anime thief known as Lupin the Third. Instead of working for an honest living, Lupin would rather steal and make money quickly.

Theft in any form is a big no-no, everyone! While you might want a quick rich scheme like Lupin and his team, these plans tend to have negative effects. Not only do they make you constantly want to steal to make money fast, but they will most likely land you in the slammer. Lupin the Third might be a guy you root for in anime to escape with the big prize at the end, but let it stay at admiring him as an anime character. Don’t become a habitual thief and you’ll live an honest life free from the cops constantly pursuing you.

3. Umaru Doma from Himouto! Umaru-chan (Poor Diet)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jul, 2015- Sept, 2015

If you love comedy anime then you’ve probably tried out Himouto! Umaru-chan. This loveable comedy/slice of life series stars adorable—but annoying—Umaru Doma as she begs for what she wants and basically is a straight up otaku. Now you might be thinking we’re going to say being an otaku is an unhealthy habit. Well, we promise you we won’t, especially seeing as how most of us here at Honey’s Anime are otaku ourselves. Umaru isn’t here on our Top 10 Unhealthy Habits Anime Characters Have list for her game and anime love. Umaru is here because she has a terrible diet.

Let’s face it, folks. We anime and gamers tend to eat pretty bad from time to time. We want to enjoy a new episode of a series such as the currently airing Hinamatsuri with a bag of chips and a cold soda. However, most of us realize that if we always ate like this, we’d be in some bad shape, unless you’re blessed with a powerful metabolism. Umaru Domo from Himouto! Umaru-chan eats horribly as she devours chips, candies and drinks her precious Cola as if they are going to be sold out soon. Needless to say, don’t be like Umaru and eat snacks in moderation folks.

2. Katsuragi from Senran Kagura (Molester)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jan, 2013- Mar, 2013

Everyone here has what is known as personal space. We as humans like people to not always invade our personal bubbles as it sometimes can come across as annoying or harassing. Anime characters like Katsuragi from Senran Kagura however, don’t realize that personal space is an important thing. Katsuragi, instead, is all about violating women’s personal space by doing something very lewd. This big chested ninja girl loves to grope out women.

Imagine this for a moment, ladies out there. Here you are trying to walk to your next class and out comes your best friend—Katsuragi in this case—ready to pounce. Katsuragi isn’t going to just give you a nice hello or hug, but instead, she’s going to grab your oppai and shake them around. While many readers will get nosebleeds from the thought of this—we won’t say we did or didn’t personally as well—being a gropper, or molester, like Katsuragi is just a bad habit to have. Respect your friends and or loved ones, don’t grab them inappropriately as that might have some law breaking effects.

1. Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop (Heavy Smoker)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Air Date: Apr, 1998- Apr, 1999

Cowboy Bebop is easily one of the most popular anime known in the anime world. Space bounty hunters who look for targets to capture. Revenge plots that lead people to devoting their lives to one goal. Space battles with ships dodging and blasting missiles and bullets! These are some of the obscenest things found in Cowboy Bebop and as cool as they are, they are pretty far from anything even remotely possible in the real world.

Spike Spiegel, however, keeps things grounded in Cowboy Bebop because he does easily one of the worst habits someone can do. Spike, despite his wicked martial arts moves and space piloting abilities, is a heavy smoker. While we here at Honey’s Anime won’t condemn smokers—even though you shouldn’t—it’s a very unhealthy habit and one that almost counters his cooler elements. There isn’t a single episode of Cowboy Bebop that doesn’t have Spike smoking at some point or another and that shows he’s pretty much addicted to that unhealthy habit. Spike Spiegel might be a cool character we all admire, but we hope people realize not to mimic his affection for tobacco.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it, folks. While anime can be outlandish with its characters sometimes—we don’t think there are many real ninja who can summon giant frogs—it can also echo some of the worst traits we as human beings have. Yet, maybe this isn’t such a bad thing as this connection allows us to feel even closer to some of our favorite anime characters from the anime world. Are any of the characters above just like you?
