10. Donnel from Fire Emblem Awakening

  • System/Platform: Nintendo 3DS
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Publisher: Intelligent Systems, Nintendo SPD
  • Release Date: Apr 19, 2012

In Fire Emblem Awakening, we are greeted by an all-star cast of heroes and heroines. These fighters fly horse with heavy armor on and or have swords with magical properties. Though for our list of the Top 10 Weak Characters in Gaming, we look at none of those warriors. Instead our attention turns to a character gained on Paralogue 1. A young villager wielding a spear named Donnel.

Donnel initially is the weakest character in Fire Emblem Awakening. With stats that seem fitting for his Villager class, Donnel is considered at first to be a joke recruit character. However, Donnel does have one shining theme to him in the form of stats that can be changed to any class and thus, makes him one of the strongest characters in Fire Emblem Awakening. However, if you wish to see Donnel become this strong character, be prepared to endure many battles with him having a high chance of dying as you level him up. That’s why Donnel is the perfect starting point for our list.

9. Baby Mario from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

  • System/Platform: Super NES, GBA
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Publisher: Nintendo EAD
  • Release Date: Aug 5, 1995

9. Baby Mario from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Fans of Mario tend to forget that before Mario was the strong plumber we all know and love, he was like all of us people, a baby. Sure, he might have been cute and laughable with his big red hat but this was when Mario was at his absolute weakest. Though, is Baby Mario really that weak? Trust us, Baby Mario is perfect for our weak characters in gaming list.

Baby Mario can’t do what adult Mario does in any form. This means no ground pounds or jumping attacks. Baby Mario can only ride on Yoshi’s back and pray Yoshi doesn’t get hit. That’s why Baby Mario might be cute but he is far from the strong hero from the Super Mario franchise we’ve always known and adored.

8. Glass Joe from Punch-Out!!

  • System/Platform: Arcade, NES, Famicon, Nintendo E-Shop
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Publisher: Nintendo R&D3
  • Release Date: 1983

Punch-Out!! was a very unique title for fans of Nintendo back in the early 80s. Rather than being a platformer or shooter, Punch-Out!! was a boxing game that put players in the role of Little Mac. Despite being quite small—though on the arcades he was a bit larger—Little Mac had an abominable spirit and players could tell he was the boxer that had something to prove. Though we’re not here to talk about Little Mac, but instead, the first opponent players face.

Known as Glass Joe, the name seems quite fitting for your first match. While Glass Joe can fight—barely, mind you—it only takes a few hits to knock him out. Even on harder difficulties, Glass Joe makes us laugh in comparison to the fighters who come after him and how much tougher they are. We still love Glass Joe for not giving up though his weak nature in Punch-Out!! makes him a perfect choice on our list of the Top 10 Weak Characters in Gaming. Maybe one-day Nintendo will give Glass Joe a moment to shine but seeing as how it’s been nearly a decade since the last Punch-Out!! release, we aren’t holding our breath.

7. King Allant from Demon’s Souls

  • System/Platform: PS3
  • Developer: Sony Computer Entertainment, Atlus USA, Namco Bandai Games
  • Publisher: FromSoftware
  • Release Date: Feb 5, 2009

Before Dark Souls or Bloodborne, there was Demon’s Souls a tough game that acts as the first entry of rage inducing games from developer FromSoftware. Demon’s Souls requires players to endure a brutally tough world with even tougher area bosses. That’s why most figured once you reached the end of Demon’s Souls, you would have to face an extremely tough final boss. That, however, wasn’t the case and we are greeted by King Allant who is laughable easy to defeat.

King Allant, in Demon’s Souls, is a strange crab/slug-like creature who was once a proud leader. While players who get close to King Allant get a nasty surprise as his attacks do a ton of damage, King Allant can only attack with a few moves and from afar, he is left completely open to attack. You could just sit in one spot and shoot arrows non-stop to take down his health as he blabs about various story related concepts. After all the trials and tribulations players enjoyed in Demon’s Souls, King Allant is almost a slap in the face to the players because of his weak nature. Maybe King Allant was strong one time in the past but now, he is easily the easiest boss in Demon’s Souls to face despite being the final battle to end the game.

6. Dan Hibiki from Street Fighter Alpha

  • System/Platform: Arcade, PS1, Saturn, CPS Changer, PSN, Game Boy Color
  • Developer: Capcom, Virgin Interactive (EU)
  • Publisher: Capcom
  • Release Date: Jun 5, 1995

Street Fighter has always produced some of the coolest fighting game characters in the genre. Ryu, Sagat, Chun-Li, the list goes on of iconic fighters from the franchise. Then strangely in 1995, Capcom released Street Fighter Alpha and one of the warriors was named Dan Hibiki. Mirroring the designs of Ken and Ryu, Dan’s pink Gi makes him stand out from the rest of the warriors but we wished that was the only reason he stood out. Dan stands out for another reason; he’s incredibly pathetic as a fighter.

Like Ryu and Ken, Dan can actually harness energy and produce the powerful Hadoken. Unfortunately, Dan’s energy—according to his story—is weak and improperly trained. This means that Dan can barely control energy and it shows as a small and silly looking Hadoken blast. While there are players out there in the world that can use Dan—seeing as how he has showed up in most if not all Street Fighter games since his initial release—Dan is still considered a joke character because of his weak powers and moves. Though at least Dan still smiles widely and acts as if he’s the star of the show. Got to give him props for pretending to be cool.

5. Tingle from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

  • System/Platform: Nintendo 64, Nintendo 3DS
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Publisher: Nintendo EAD
  • Release Date: Apr 27, 2000

Fans of The Legend of Zelda series—including us here at Honey’s Anime—have grown accustomed to meeting weird characters. From annoying fairies to half spider and half human hybrids, nothing can usually phase the fans of Link’s various adventures. Then in 2000, a character named Tingle appeared and fans were left with their jaws to the ground. Not only is Tingle weirder than anything from The Legend of Zelda’s various games, he also happens to be one of the weakest characters.

Tingle dons his green suit, red underwear and small blue backpack and that is about all he wields. In The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and various other titles in the series, Tingle rarely ever attacks or does anything heroic. Instead Tingle just flies away with a load of balloons or other strange device. Luckily, Tingle has some great map making abilities that can help Link on his journey. If Tingle didn’t have that trait, he would be probably even lower on our list of the Top 10 Weak Characters in Gaming.

4. Bob the Killer Goldfish from Earthworm Jim

  • System/Platform: Sega Genesis, SNES, Sega CD, Game Boy, Sega Game Gear, PC, MS-DOS, GBA
  • Developer: Playmates Interactive Entertainment
  • Publisher: Shiny Entertainment
  • Release Date: Aug 2, 1994

Earthworm Jim might seem like a silly game but players of the odd title have known it to be one of the most entertaining platformers/run and gun games around. With some tough enemies and even tougher bosses, Earthworm Jim can be insanely frustrating. That’s why when players met Bob the Killer Goldfish, they prepared for anything from this level boss. However, eventually players would realize that in all of the Earthworm Jim games, Bob the Killer Goldfish is anything but a killer.

In reality, Bob the Killer Goldfish is laughably easy. In the first game, players just have Jim knock over the table Bob is on which causes his fishbowl to shatter and leaves him flopping around for air. The second Earthworm Jim game makes Bob seem more serious but once again, Jim wins as all the player sees is Jim eat Bob and walk away. Needless to say, as far as bosses go in video games, Bob the Killer Goldfish is meant to be a joke. Though that doesn’t stop us from laughing at this incredibly weak boss and that means the developer’s mission of making a silly boss worked quite well at the end of the day.

3. Ashley Graham from Resident Evil 4

  • System/Platform: GameCube, PS2, PC, Nintendo Wii, iOS, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Publisher: Capcom Production
  • Release Date: Jan 11, 2005

In the Resident Evil series—and we’re including the movies here--players have gotten to see some of the stronger female heroes and villains in gaming history. Jill Valentine for example, is a tough ex-police officer who ends up working with BSAA and showing bio-terrorists the meaning of hard justice. Then you even have Ada Wong who is a villain one second and then the next ,helping Leon out of a bind. However, there is one female who we see as being the biggest joke to the female cast in Resident Evil. The girl in question is the president’s daughter—in the world of Resident Evil 4—Ashley Graham.

While Ashley might have a snarky mouth and pretends to be tough—akin to a tsundere in anime—Ashley is far from being a fighter. Unable to use weapons, Ashley ends up usually being protected by Leon Kennedy throughout the entirety of Resident Evil 4 once she makes her appearance. The most Ashley can do is scream for help while being dragged away by the Las Plagas infected enemies. Ashley might scream and cry that she’s so high on our list but we know many will agree she deserves to be on this list.

2. Lester from Lester the Unlikely

  • System/Platform: Super NES
  • Developer: Visual Concepts
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Release Date: 1994

Gamers come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Though when we play games, we hope to embody someone not exactly like us. We want a hero who has large muscles or is cool if we lack those traits. However, in Lester the Unlikely we don’t get a cool hero. Instead what we get as players is Lester…

Lester is quite literally a geeky hero who lacks everything we know and love about heroes. While this wouldn’t be an issue if Lester had something redeemable about him or became strong, he never does get strong within Lester the Unlikely and continues to be weak and timid. Not only is Lester’s run horrible, he has no attacks that help players and the whole game is themed around you finding a guardian to help you survive. Lester is a gaming character that we look at and just wonder why anyone decided he was a good character to create?

1. Magikarp from Pokémon Red/Blue

  • System/Platform: Game Boy
  • Developer: Game Freak
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Release Date: Feb 27. 1996

In the world of Pokémon, a player needs strong Pokémon. However, sometimes the path to getting said strong Pokémon isn’t always easy. The reason for that comes from the fact that some Pokémon start off weak and need to be leveled up. Leveling up said Pokemon usually isn’t too difficult unless you’re one of the weakest of all time. That’s right, folks, we’re talking about Magikarp from Pokémon Red/Blue.

Literally, Magikarp is the weakest creature of thing in all of gaming history. Sure, Magikarp eventually levels up to Gyarados, but to get there, you need to level Magikarp to level 20. Why is this so hard you might ask? Well that’s because Magikarp only has one move called Splash that does nothing and is utterly useless. Be prepared to suffer trying to use Magikarp as he is the weakest Pokémon in any of the franchise and thus takes top spot on our Top 10 Weak Characters in Gaming.

Final Thoughts

While we might consider the above characters weak and sometimes useless, we also realize they are important. A lot of times these characters help their stories work and or become powerful heroes with some time—a lot of times with some—and thus are actually useful. What do you think of our list folks? Do you feel we found the weakest characters around or did we miss some? Comment down below and for similar article keep stuck to our hive here at Honey’s Anime!
