Once again, our favorite gifted detectives faced off against another villain out to destroy Yokohama and the gifted people who live there. This time, they had to outsmart Fyodor and his organization, the Rats in the House of the Dead. Fyodor pitted the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia against one another by infecting their respective leaders, with only one surviving if the other died. Like before, Atsushi, Dazai, and the other members of the Agency were faced with life-changing decisions. Here are just a few of our favorite epic moments from the season!
5. Rebirth of Francis – Episode 32
The Guild was utterly destroyed with the defeat of Francis, but Louisa is determined to find their leader, leading her to the slums of Yokohama. Though Francis is reluctant to go with her at first, he soon regains his wealth and status, as well as a new love for clearance shopping! We were never huge fans of this villain from Bungou Stray Dogs’ 2nd season, but we have to admit, it was pretty satisfying watching Francis easily infiltrate and take over a wealthy, corrupt company for himself, especially with his dramatic courtroom appearance!
4. Ranpo vs. Chuuya? – Episode 35
The Armed Detective Agency members decide to fight on behalf of their leader. Their mastermind, Ranpo, decides to face off against the strongest member of the Port Mafia, Chuuya. This was a surprise twist for sure, as Ranpo has no real powers to fight with except for his amazing deduction abilities. Yet even when it seems as though everything is stacked against him, Ranpo proves that he is the smartest once again! He pulls out the mystery novel given to him by Poe and traps them both inside. Ranpo is able to get out of the novel by the end of the series. Of course, with Chuuya’s temper, his patience for solving the mystery wears thin and he is trapped inside for a bit longer. This was a genius move by Ranpo and we loved every second of it!
3. The Source of Chuuya’s Strength – Episode 28
As with the 2nd season of Bungou Stray Dogs, this next season begins with a look into the past—this time looking into the beginning of when Dazai and Chuuya met. Chuuya was part of a group of young rebels while Dazai was leading the Port Mafia. The two start to work together, and in defeating their enemy, Chuuya’s true nature is revealed. He is actually Arahabaki, a powerful deity-like creature brought into their universe and bonded to Chuuya, giving him immense power to fight with. As one of our favorite characters, we loved learning more about the nature of Chuuya’s past!
2. Atsushi and Akutagawa’s Combined Powers – Episode 37
Teaming up once again, Atsushi and Akutagawa chase down the virus user, though they are quickly hindered by Ivan. Gifted with a powerful ability to control earth, Ivan also has an advantage because Akutagawa is injured. Despite this, Atsushi and Akutagawa work together valiantly, but it seems like it might not be enough. The two get trapped in sinking ground, with no way out. Akutagawa asks Atsushi again about why he fights, and when Atsushi tells him about his mentor from the orphanage, Akutagawa feels differently about the were-cat for the first time. He gifts his cloak and Rashoumon to Atsushi, enhancing his claws to cut through Ivan’s attacks for good. The combined attack easily defeats Ivan. Once again, Atsushi and Akutagawa prove that their teamwork is strong, despite their hatred for one another!
1. Fyodor Escapes – Episode 29
This season starts out with the action quickly, with Fyodor already held captive by the Port Mafia. Though Ace thinks that he has everything under control, Fyodor soon proves that he had planned out his escape far in advance. Ace challenges Fyodor to a game and Fyodor’s unknown ability gets in his head quickly. Fyodor manipulates Ace into thinking he can escape from a “mind prison” and it causes Ace to hang himself to try to get free. He even kills every other servant in the vicinity, managing to free himself with seemingly no effort at all. And to this day, we still don’t even know what his ability truly is! Fyodor is one of the most interesting villains so far, and this introduction was pretty crazy!
Final Thoughts
The latest season of Bungou Stray Dogs was a great balance of character’s back story and interesting main plot! Each of these moments showed us a little more about the characters we love, though there were plenty of other great moments, like Katai’s introduction and the discovery of Gin’s ties to Akutagawa.
