2020 was errr… quite an awkward life to everyone. But that wouldn’t disrupt my time to read some manga and light novels during my time as a Honey’s Anime Writer. Don’t get me wrong. Many things were going on in my life that requires my attention. The beauty of manga and light novels is that they can be related to our day-to-day lives we experience and how they can broaden our views on certain issues so that we can solve them and improve ourselves as a person. Remember, these titles are ranked based on my preferences. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
5. Sasayaku You ni Koi wo Utau (Whisper Me a Love Song), Manga
- Authors: Takeshima, Eku
- Genres: Romance, School, Shoujo Ai
- Volumes: 2
- Published: October 2020 - Ongoing
High school student Himari experiences love at first sight for her senpai Yori, who is part of a band for the school. Unexpectedly, Himari confesses to Yori of her romantic feelings, and, to Himari’s surprise, Yori reciprocates her feelings. But the problem between these two lovebirds is that both carry a different view of love.
This manga has the most beautiful artwork I had ever seen in 2020. The art style is overloaded with cuteness and UWU vibes. Takeshima went all out on everything in this manga. Ahem. Back to the topic, the romance aspect of this story focuses on how Himari and Yori reach the definition of love that both would agree without knowing each other’s view. The relationship and the world setting are meant for readers who like to read wholesome and innocent yuri manga.
4. SPY x Family, Manga
- Authors: Endou, Tatsuya
- Genres: Action, Comedy, Shounen
- Volumes: 4
- Published: June 2020 - Ongoing
Twilight is known to be the best spy there is. When he received his next mission: infiltrate an elite private school, he has to start a family of his own. What he didn’t know is that his wife is a famous assassin and the daughter he adopted is an esper.
SPY x Family shows what it feels like to start a family of your own. The story involves how each family member has different agendas of their own and trying to solve their issues with the help of others. The chapters can sometimes drive up your maternal instincts, and the difficulties they face can be related to the social norms in our lives. The main character that tries to keep the family together is Anya, the esper, as she knows the secret identities of her parents. She chose to keep their secrets because she thinks hers and their lives would be interesting this way. Besides, she wants to be part of a loving family.
3. Nanatsu no Maken ga Shihai suru (Reign of the Seven Spellblades), Light Novel
- Authors: Uno, Bokuto (Story) and Ruria, Miyuki, (Art)
- Genres: Action, Fantasy, School
- Volumes: 2
- Published: December 2020 - Ongoing
Kimberly Magic Academy welcomes their new generation of first-year students to nurture them into full-fledged mages. Among the newcomers, Oliver Horn is decently skilled with the wand and the blade, and Nanao Hibiya is a strong-willed samurai girl from the nation of Yamatsu. What kind of future is in store with these two students where they see each other as comrades and rivals in equal measure.
I was surprised by the setting of this series. Primarily because of how the school is designed and how the practical classes operate similarly to Harry Potter. If you are a fan of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, this is like the anime or Japanese light novel version. Do you want to be a mage? You have to discover the dark secrets of this academy and survive the brutal way of life during the nights of the academy. Their curfew is no joke. One mistake can cost your sanity or your life.
2. Saguri-chan Tankentai, Manga
- Authors: Akiyama, Yoco
- Genres: Comedy, Shounen, Slice of Life
- Volumes: 4
- Published: August 2017 - January 2019
After reuniting with his childhood friend, Saguri, he realizes that Saguri has recovered from her weak constitution. She asked Tsumugi to join her for explorations to discover the nature and wonders of Japan. Who would say no to a hyperactive cute female childhood friend?
This manga, to me, is almost perfect for anyone interested in Japan’s nature and tourist destinations. From buildings to living things, the manga presents these elements in an educational manner for readers to learn their histories and how they function. Each chapter has at least one-page illustration that sometimes looked they are done with a paintbrush for readers to enjoy nature. If you want to know more about Japan’s tourist destinations and having trips with Saguri and friends, you might like this one.
1. Necromance, Manga
- Authors: Doumoto, Yuuki
- Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
- Volumes: 5
- Published: August 2019 - November 2020
After defeating the Demon King and killed in the process, Shibuki Raven is filled with regret for not proposing his love to Safina Pastel, the grand saint of their party and country. To his surprise, he got revived from the dead and turned out to be the undead, and he can’t lay a single finger on Safina due to her holy magic. How do these two lovers get together?
Out of all titles listed here, Necromance has resonated with me the most and reminds me of my relationship with my lover. Due to the undead status, Shibuki’s interactions with Safina are in a long-distance relationship even though they remain close to each other. It is painful to see such fate bestowed upon them, but I can’t stop rooting for them to be together. Many funny adventures weren’t what you would expect and make them fun and easygoing. Remember, don’t get yourself hit by God’s Punch. You will know what I meant when you read this manga.
Final Thoughts
Despite the awkward year of 2020, I have a lot of fun reading these titles. Sure, most of them are the ones I read to write articles for Honey’s Anime, but it is not that bad. In terms of genres, I value more on romance, adventures, action, comedy, and educational aspects. That’s just my preference. This is my first year of working with Honey’s Anime, and I hope I can improve my skills in reviewing manga and light novels and time management so that I can provide as many details as possible for readers to make informed decisions.
I tend to read through the stories to know the author’s intentions and know where it is heading and their characters. Think of it as a professional courtesy for all the hard work authors have been through for their works. I hope 2021 and the future will become better for everyone, and I hope everyone has a wonderful and prosperous life.
