We have lists for both new shows and returning ones, so we’ve got you covered. Here are the new shows!
5. My Home Hero
Okay, who doesn’t like Taken? A loving, badass dad who’s all about bringing a world of pain to those who’d harm his precious daughter, subsequent murder and thrills, and jam-packed action. Well, if you enjoy the complex depth and moral ambiguity of unconditional familial love, a family okay with a little violence to protect their loved ones, and a good old-fashioned murder cover-up, then you’re in luck!
This season’s My Home Hero is exactly that. When Liam Neeson 2.0, aka, Tetsuo Tosu finds out that his daughter has been continuously abused by her boyfriend, he comes to an even more horrifying realisation: she’s the target of said boyfriend’s crime syndicate who plan to extort money from her wealthy grandparents and kill her off like they have previous girlfriends. Thus, Tetsuo does what any concerned parent would do: he kills the boyfriend with the help of his wife Kasen.
However, with people questioning the victim’s (if one can call him that) disappearance, the web of lies only seems to be growing more and more convoluted and Tetsuo and Kasen work together to protect their daughter from the sinister forces in the shadows. With threats of all kinds at every turn, we’re sure this anime is going to keep us on the edge of our seats!
4. Kanojo ga Koushaku-tei ni Itta Riyuu (The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion)
Otome Isekai! Arguably one of the stranger sub-genres but definitely one of the most satisfying. And this Spring, arguably one of the best otome isekai manhwas is being brought to life! Raeliana is one of the anime we’re most looking forward to this season. Mystery, romance, comedy, and suspense, all tied together with some beautifully fleshed-out characters and a magnificently spun plot, we’re sure that this anime is going to be fabulous (provided they stick to the script). When Park Eunha dies in modern Korea, she finds herself transmigrated into the body of Raeliana McMillan, the eldest daughter of a nouveau riche baron in a novel where she, unfortunately, plays a plot device that’s killed off almost immediately.
However, the new Raeliana, who knows how it goes, refuses to go quietly into that good night and plans to cling to this new opportunity of a second life with all of her might. Her might, in this case, being teaming up with (read: blackmailing) the male lead and most powerful figure in the story: Duke Noah Wynknight to survive the story. High-stakes with life, death, and a novel literally scripted around her death specifically, how will Raeliana make it through? And will Noah really be an asset or a one-way ticket to doom? We can’t wait to find out!
3. Ao no Orchestra
Light music, orchestral music, traditional Japanese music, idol music, and classical music, the Music Anime genre is a vast and varied landscape. There’s a corresponding anime for pretty much every existing instrument, koto, piano, guitar, shamisen, you name it and it’s sure to exist. So it’s no surprise that there’s one about one of the most popular classical instruments: the violin. Hajime Aono has been in love with the violin ever since he can remember.
Inspired by his world-renowned violinist grandfather, he too nurtured his talent, however, a bitter family feud ending in his parent’s divorce had him swearing off music for good. Predictably, this changes when he meets Ritsuko Akine (it’s like Bon and Sen 2.0, or Chiaki and Nodame 3.0), a passionate amateur violinist with little musical knowledge who dreams of going to a school with an orchestra. And thus begins a mutually beneficial friendship, where one learns to play and the other learns to want to play.
We’re going, to be honest, we’ve really missed the drama and melody that comes with quality music anime, and Ao No Orchestra seems to be a promising remedy! So if you’re in the mood for some mood music and the struggles of tortured musical artists, then you should be adding this anime to your Spring lineup!
2. Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School)
Two lost souls who find each other in the starlight, the stage is set at an abandoned observatory of a school Astronomy Club, and a meaningful friendship forms as the night crosses the sky. This season’s newest iyashikei anime puts a different twist on the school slice-of-life genre. Grumpy Ganta Nakami and carefree Isaki Magari have a serendipitous meeting in an abandoned observatory. This leads to an unlikely friendship as the two connect over an unlikely commonality: insomnia.
As the story gently unfolds, we’ll get to see a beautiful tale about friendship and mutual support as these two grow closer while dealing with their shared issue and their impact on their school lives. Comforting, poetic, lyrical, and with a beautiful late-night setting, Insomniacs After School is the perfect anime for a change of pace this season!
1. Jigokuraku (Hell’s Paradise)
An apathetic ninja who just won’t die, a ‘decapitator,' a mysterious island said to be a paradise…. Hell’s Paradise has all the makings of a great watch this upcoming season and we’re here for it! Gabimaru the Hollow who is unfairly put on death row has taken all the Ls he can and now no longer wishes to live. However, the fact that he keeps on keeping on in spite of the countless execution methods he’s been sentenced to suggests otherwise because deep, deep, down, he wants to return to his wife and live. When Asaemon the Decapitator, executioner extraordinaire, gives him a chance at a full pardon in exchange for joining an expedition to a mysterious island, Gabimaru’s luck seems to finally be changing for the better. However, nothing is as it seems and we’re willing to bet that an island said to be paradise is pretty much anything but!
