Introduction
What if you could summon the power of your soul? What if that power could be weaponized? What if that power could be used to control the forces of nature? What would you do with that kind of power? Would you fight for justice? Would you fight for power? Would you fight for fame? The characters in Chivalry of a Failed Knight fight for all these things, each overcoming their own obstacles along the way.
Ikki Kurogane is on a personal quest to become a Mage-Knight and unfortunately on a scale that ranks your power from A, very powerful, to F, almost no magical power, he ranks F. He will have to sharpen the skills he does have to perfection if he is to ever prove that despite not having a lot of innate magical power he can beat even the greatest A-ranked mage at Hagun Academy. The story of Ikki’s quest is also an ecchi romantic comedy. A comedy that begins with Ikki accidently coming upon Stella Vermillion, an A-ranked student and princess in the middle of changing her clothes. She is determined to uphold her honor, so she challenges him to a duel. The stakes are high in the duel, the loser becoming the other’s slave. Will the two work out their differences? Will Ikki be able to keep all the distractions at bay and focus on his quest? The story is a fast-paced 12-episode battle anime with a nice slice of ecchi rom-com that will awe you with action and make you envy Ikki every step of the way.
5. Episode 1
Boy meets girl. That is usually how a story begins and in this story since, it’s an ecchi anime, boy meets girl who is in a compromising situation (which tends to be the rule). Ikki and Stella’s cute meet is no different. After a long morning workout, Ikki returns to his dorm room to find a stranger standing there taking off her clothes. Like Ikki, we like what we see: a beautiful young woman in black lace panties with a black garter around her waist. The garter strings act like a lure drawing our attention downward to where they grasp onto the black stockings. The gasps of surprise from her mouth draw our attention up to her face; we get a glance at her ample bosom restrained in a black bra along the way. We even laugh out loud at Ikki’s surprising reaction to the lace-adorned Venus standing in the middle of his room, “I won’t even make an excuse and say I didn’t see what I saw. So how about I take my clothes off and we call it even?” The confidence Ikki has as he pulls off his shirt and the view of Stella’s curves make this a perfect beginning to an ecchi story.
4. Episode 2
The devotion that siblings have is very special. We find that family bonds usually push us to the extreme as we are willing to do things for our siblings that we wouldn’t do for anyone else. We know that comes from the shared experiences and bonds we build as we grow up. Ikki and his sister Shizuku are no different. Ikki had a very hard home life; he was looked down upon, especially by their father, for his lack of innate magical ability. It was a cruel situation that Shizuku isn’t able to forgive. When Ikki relates to Stella that his sister is going to be starting at their school she narrows her eyes with suspicion and says “you’re not going to tell me she’s not blood-related or anything, are you?” and he replies “No. We’re just regular full-blooded siblings,” as if a nod to the sis-con trope. The day goes on and Ikki and Stella are walking through a crowded hallway when a voice chimes in, “Onii-sama!” A girl then pushes Ikki against a wall while planting a full kiss on his lips. Everyone around them stares and tries to cope with the major PDA. Shizuku explains to a shocked, speechless Ikki (and while Stella is loudly freaking out and protesting) that if it’s okay for men and women in shallow relationships to kiss, it should also be okay for siblings with a deep bond. We realize Ikki’s sister is a little different and it’s not until later we see her true motivation for wanting to provide an all-encompassing love for her brother. Sibling love (at least in anime) is always something a little racy that gives most of us a giggle here in the real world, and definitely enough to put this scene on our ecchi list.
3. Episode2
The results of a duel between Ikki and an overconfident Stella in the first episode leaves the princess a slave to her male roommate. We find Stella doesn’t mind this role, despite her verbal protests; she finds it liberating. She can do things to Ikki, not that he’d ever ask her to, that a normal young lady wouldn’t do. She uses her honor and status as his slave as an excuse. When bath time rolls around for Ikki our curvy princess Stella slips on her string bikini and slips into Ikki’s shower. Ikki, ever the gentleman, protests but Stella convinces him she is there to wash her master’s back. The soapy Stella rubs and scrubs the boy, pressing her body up against his until, yes, you probably called it, her bikini top comes undone and falls to the floor. We envy Ikki as he does everything he can to maintain control of his male teenage senses as the sexy girl he lives with presses her flesh against his. We know this is an obligatory scene in most ecchi shows, but it is a scene filled with sultry Stella and is well worth the praise of this list.
2. Episode 9
- Episodes: ___
- Aired: ___
Ikki and Stella have spent the last several weeks competing in the grueling school battle tournament. The school director, who supports Ikki and his quest to rise to the top of the school, offers the couple a trip out to the countryside to stay at the student council retreat. When Ikki and Stella arrive, they are joined by members of the student council and told their mission is to help clean the retreat. The couple don’t really complain about the menial task and pitch in. They know when they’re done they’ll get a chance to spend some time together without the pressures of the battle tournament. With the retreat cleaned the love birds head for a walk on a nature trail. Stella begins to fall ill as they walk and to top it off it begins to rain. The two take shelter in a small lodge as night begins to fall. Stella, who is losing body heat fast, can barely steady her hands and asks Ikki, who’s already shed his wet clothes, to undress her. He starts by helping her with her skirt and stockings, trying to be as professional and cool as possible as he rolls the wet hose off his girlfriend’s legs. Stella’s panting and shivering only arouses him as he unbuttons and removes her blouse and bra before wrapping her in a blanket and moving her near the fire. The red-haired princess even suggests that they could hook up if he wanted. Ikki’s not sure whether it was delirium or a real suggestion, and confesses to her that he couldn’t respect himself if he did that with her now, and he knows that if he doesn’t respect himself he could never hope for her to respect him. The conversation and soft little pants of a cute girl gives this scene a capital “E” for ecchi.
1. Episode Ending Credits
We don’t often include an ending credit scene in an ecchi list, but this one is a little different. The music has an almost operatic gothic march sound lending weight to the slowly scrolling images of young naked girls covered in rose petals. Yes, we said young naked girls covered in rose petals. Whether a tribute to the 90s film American Beauty or just a design choice it works really well. The slow scroll begins with Stella laying on a bed of roses surrounded by thorns and clutching her well-placed sword to do the work of a censor bar. We then move on to Shizuku and most of the other members of the female cast. We watch them slowly move by, seductively stretched out on the roses, until we come back to Stella. Our heroine Stella, still laying on the bed of red rose petals, is making bedroom eyes and beckoning us to join her. It’s enough to give us the perfect reason to place the ending credits at number 1.
Final Thoughts
Chivalry of a Failed Knight is a school battle story more than anything. It does have several ecchi moments in the 12-episode arc but that doesn’t seem to be its main focus, though it seems far more the focus than “Asterisk War” -- a show with a very similar plot, but a lot less in the ecchi category. The relationship that is built between Stella and Ikki is kind of sweet and it’s gratifying that they become a couple well before the finale. The two of them have some great awkward couple conversations through the course of the show as well. You won’t be disappointed if you watch this anime and are expecting some great fight scenes, a good protagonist and one truly sexy leading lady.
