7. Sheets no Sukima
- Genres: Comedy, Romance, Josei
- Volumes: 1
- Published: Apr 25, 2008
If you are a newbie about all things Yoshihara, we can recommend you to start with Sheets no Sukima. It is a collection of short stories that will help you get the idea of the topics our mangaka likes. Beware: some of them are a bit dark. However, all of them will trap your interest.
In Sheherezade, a modern One and a Thousand Nights tale comes true in the life of an office lady. In Sheet no Sukima, a couple gets their marriage paperwork and the divorce paperwork as well. Will they use both?? In Yoru no Bannin, we get the interaction between a workaholic office lady and a security ward. In Blanc, a soon bride-to-be visits her cousin. In Kizuato, a woman who recently was left as a widow abuses her servant. And finally, in Izayoi, a triangle between a doctor, a guy and a suicidal woman will develop.
6. Venus ni Arazu
- Genres: Comedy, Romance, Josei
- Volumes: 2
- Published: Jun 8 to Dec 8, 2009
Miyoshi Yoshiko wishes to have success in her modeling career. However, all she gets are small jobs like being the model for an art school class. Yoshiko does not let that discourage her, so she gives her best effort! Unfortunately, after a modeling season, she is fired. It wasn’t even her fault, but the fault of a sculptor called Chuujou Taro! Even worse, he offers her a new job. Will Yoshiko survive this perverted new boss? We are not telling 🙂
The situation looks difficult but if we take into account that Yoshiko is also a woman who stands up for herself, things get a bit balanced. The interactions between the artist and the model are simply hilarious! The manga is full with tender moments that lead to steamed ones. So, if your thing is art combined with romantic comedy, here you have Venus ni Arazu.
5. Matamata O-bo-re-ta-i
- Genres: Comedy, Ecchi, Romance, Josei
- Volumes: 3
- Published: 1998 to 2001
This collection of stories has a prequel called O-bo-re-ta-i, published in the nineties and containing the very first works by Yoshihara Yuki. Although Matamata O-bo-re-ta-i is from a middle period of Yoshihara as mangaka, it is quite varied. For example, my fair gentleman is about two persons who decide to commit suicide for different reasons and meet for the first time at their chosen place of suicide. Other stories are more in line with romance and fun.
Of course, with the professional women and the office ladies with domineering attitudes abound, the guys are the prey to be caught. Beware: the quality of the illustration is not always superb, but the range of stories compensate this. It is also interesting to see how Yoshihara evolved as a mangaka both in plot and illustration style.
4. Itadakimasu
- Genres: Comedy, Ecchi, Romance, Josei
- Volumes: 4
- Published: 2003 to 2004
If you ever had gone through a divorce, you can understand how painful it is to see the person that once was your husband. This is the case for Naeko who, on top of it all, has to work by her ex-husband’s side. Nevertheless, this is not the whole story. It turns out that Naeko is getting involved with a younger guy. It is one of those things that you don’t go searching but simply happen. And her ex-husband wants to get back with her! Complicated much?
We can see that the stories in Yoshihara’s manga tend to be complex. Itadakimasu is not an exception. In this case, the woman is not the one who is confused or wondering what to do with her feelings. It is the guys who are pursuing her, so she hast to take a cool headed decision. So, if you like this type of heroine, you definitely have to read Itadakimasu!
3. The best selection
- Genres: Comedy, Romance, Josei
- Volumes: 1
- Published: Jun 26, 2008
Here we have another one shot collection of mangas by Yoshihara Yuki. Published a few months after Sheets no Sukima, this volume has some of her best classics. Some of them were collected in other collections or at the end of
Yoshihara’s longer mangas. However, it is good to know you can simply get this volume for a quick read of some of her best works.
In Sekai wa Futari de Dekite Iru, we testify the love story between a succubus and a priest. Ningyo Ouji is about the relationship between an office lady and a merman (yes, like the Little Mermaid but reversed). Oboretai presents us another office lady who falls in love with her supervisor. He’s 100% silk is about the daughter of a women’s apparel maker and her blind date. Finally, Chanel of Whispers tells us the story of a troubled couple that has been dating for six months.
2. Chou yo Hana yo
- Genres: Comedy, Romance, Josei
- Volumes: 8
- Published: 2005 to 2009
Imagine that you were born in a rich family that goes bankrupt. Will you cry and wait for your luck to change? Or will you be proactive like Choko Kuze, who gets a job as an office lady? The twist here is that her boss turns out to once have been one of her servants, when she was a little girl. Their relationship becomes awkward, as he is extremely strict in the office but treats her like if she was a queen in private. Is this love or some sick trick of her boss? Nope, we are not telling. You will have to read the manga to find out :p
This manga by Yoshihara Yuki has a difference compared to most of her work. Her heroines are very proactive in regards to love, but Choko is the one who is pursued in Chou yo Hana yo. Even worse, her boss downright harasses her! So, if you want a rest a bit from the proactive heroine, this is the manga for you.
1. Darling wa Namamono ni Tsuki
- Genres: Comedy, Romance, Josei

The environment is a cross-dressing host bar after all! The owner of the bar has a daughter called Setsuko, who falls in love with Dr. Tanabe during a medical visit and ends up marrying him. This doctor is the most normal guy that we could meet, while Setsuko is the opposite. Most of the manga deals with how they negotiate their differences and their sex life.
So yes, this manga is not for the shy among us. It also has a lot of transgender characters. All in all, the plot is full of romance, eroticism and comedy. If you want to have a good laugh and see how messy and tender love can be between different people, try Darling wa Namamono ni Tsuki.
Final Thoughts
Yoshihara Yuki’s work is not for everyone, especially if you are too keen to read fluffy shoujo manga where a kiss is the maximum intimate moment we can get. They also have desires, aspirations and can fail along the way. However, their struggles make you spend a good time featuring out if they are going to get what they want. Which manga by Yoshihara Yuki is your favorite? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon!
