Welcome to the world of mature manga! On this occasion, we are going to visit a mangaka who likes to combine the supernatural with the world of grown up women. We are talking about Ohmi Tomu, who was born in Hokkaido, Japan. Although she does not have a very long career, she has brought attention with her elegant drawing, handsome guys and sexy stories. If this is your thing, we invite you to come to the world of Ohmi Tomu. Let’s go!

7. Kindan no Koi wo Shiyou

  • Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Josei
  • Volumes: 1
  • Release: 2000

As usual, we recommend you to start easy when you do not know a mangaka. Kindan no Koi wo Shiyou is a 1 volume story that will introduce you to Ohmi Tomu’s world, as this was her debut work. The protagonist is Hisako, a woman who is attached by a drunk man. Fortunately, a cute black wolf saves her and she decides to adopt him as a pet. The best part is that the wolf can turn in a handsome man in moonlit nights.

For some otaku, the term “josei” can be synonym with boring, grown up stories. Therefore, they might be surprised when this manga makes them laugh at every page turn. The interactions between Hisako and Yato the wolf are simply hilarious, and the faces in the cute SD form of the wolf are the best. Besides that, the story is romantic and sexy, but not overly heated. Also, the drawing is surprisingly good despite the fact that this is Ohmi Tomu’s first manga.

6. Zoku - Kindan no Koi wo Shiyou

  • Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Josei
  • Volumes: 1
  • Release: 2001

The originality displayed by Ohmi Tomu in her first manga volume let her continue Hisako’s and Yato’s adventures. Her adventures include a possible son of Yato with other woman, and more rivals for Hisako! Things get a bit more dramatic too, as Hisako discovers that Yato is immortal. However, the couple is as in love as always.

We know that sequels can be failures. Fortunately, Ohmi Tomu pulls out this volume without being too repetitive. She definitely is not boring either, as the comedy between our protagonic duo is alive and kicking! Their tender and bonding moments are also some of the cutest ones. If you want to know if these two beings from different worlds will make it, you have to read this manga.

5. Anata ni Hana wo Sasagemashou (I’ll Give You a Flower)

  • Genres: Romance, Supernatural, Josei
  • Volumes: 4
  • Release: 2009

Our protagonist in this manga is Seri Hatanaka, the heir of a rich family without an ancestral history. Her family wants to marry her to Yuzuki Furumidou, who is the son of a prestigious family who ran out of money. Seri opposes this because although they both knew each other when they were young, they currently dislike each other. However, Yuzuki agrees to the rushed wedding. How will this turn out?

This sounds like a romantic comedy, alright, but hold your seats because this is not what it looks like. There is a side of mystery and suspense in this story. Although classy and fit to a rich lifestyle, the characters are not cardboard cuts. While Seri is very assertive, Yuzuki is not the classic jerk, bad guy who turns good thanks to the heroine. That is a subject for manga targeted to younger audiences, not this one. The length of the story is ideal for a mid-sized reading.

4. Mitsuyokon: Tsukumogami no Yomegoryou

  • Genres: Drama, Romance, Supernatural, Josei
  • Volumes: 5
  • Release: Jul 8, 2015 to Present

This is the most recent work by Ohmi Tomu. The protagonist is Midori, a girl who suffers from the same ailment as many other protagonists of supernatural manga: she can see and attract spirits :p Midori keeps a boring, dull life as an office lady and looks longingly at her normal, happy sister. However, her encounter with a mysterious man will turn her world upside down, as she becomes his bride.

If anyone here has ever dreamed of the ideal man simply appearing and being super kind plus a house husband, well, look no more. Here we have the perfect guy for you! Besides all his great qualities, he has supernatural powers. Midori is rather mature and certainly not a doormat, which makes their story interesting. Both characters have their cool and their sweet sides, so they make a balanced couple. Besides that, if you like Japanese traditional imagery and objects, you are in your lucky day, because this story is full with them. Oh, and keep your eyes open for all the cute spirits you will see! If you are into Shintoism, this is the Ohmi Tomu manga you should read.

3. Barairo My Honey

  • Genres: Romance, Supernatural, Josei
  • Volumes: 3
  • Release: Apr 8, 2005 to Apr 8, 2006

Koume looks so cute that she is often compared with a doll, but do not let her appearance fool you. This girl is very independent! When Koume goes in the middle of a tiger-master and a tiger-tamer, which type of adventures will they have together? Will she fall in love with one? With the two? You will have to read Barairo My Honey to find out.

Koume is one of the most charismatic leads created by Ohmi Tomu. Despite her description, she is not one dimensional. All the characters in this story are full fleshed and flawed. If you appreciate intelligence in your comedy romance, you have to read Barairo My Honey. The only bad point we can talk about is that the story is a bit brief. We wanted more!

2. Kindan no koi de ikou

  • Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Josei
  • Volumes: 10
  • Release: 2001 to 2005

This is the third part of the story between Hisako and Yato the wolf. On this occasion, a sinister man wants to get Yato at all costs. The story gets darker and we do not see much of the cute SD wolves that predated the former volumes. However, the comedic scenes where we see him and Hisako “love fighting” are pure gold. If you like suspense and action, this is the part of the story you have to read.

Be warned that a few chapters are slow. The balance between the more active parts and the slice of life ones does not feel forced. The relationship between the protagonists also changes, but not in an unnatural way. These two have always been a balanced couple, so don’t expect much drama here, only romance with a bit of comedy. Despite this is the longer part of the story, it gives us a good ending.

1. Midnight Secretary

  • Genres: Ecchi, Romance, Vampire, Supernatural, Josei
  • Volumes: 7
  • Release: Sep 2006 to Jun 2009

Finally, we have to mention the work which is probably the most known manga by Ohmi Tomu. Midnight Secretary tells us the story of Kaya, a highly efficient secretary who starts working for the successful and workaholic businessman Kyouhei Touma. Kaya does not like the guy, as he apparently is an arrogant womanizer. However, the intelligent woman discovers that he is hiding several secrets. Will Kaya’s duty as secretary prevail over what she discovers? Will Kyouhei use his abilities to silence her?

This manga is hot as hell, so we expect you are already grown up when you read it. The characters have several conflicts and the story escalates to interesting hates, as several members of Kyouhei’s family and the corporation have important roles to play. Rather than fluffy or cute romance,Midnight Secretary deals with ecstasy and duty. Both protagonists have to make difficult choices sometimes, evolving together. If stories that go beyond romance are your thing and well, you love vampires, this is the ideal manga for you.

Final Thoughts

Ohmi Tomu is not very well known in the josei world, which is a pity, because her characters are definitely worth a read. She also has a special touch to add supernatural elements to stories. Tomu also never presents naked love, but rather her characters transform and their feelings grow. Her adult attitude is certainly welcome in the world of manga. Which is your favorite Manga by Ohmi Tomu and why? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon!
