What to Expect
Now Touhou games of yesteryear come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most are usually shoot ‘em ups mixed with a fighting theme and Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle isn’t an exception to this. Players will choose from nine overly cute magical girls and battle in out in small arenas within a 3D plane. However, the question most will be concerned about is how does Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle play? Well we can honestly say pretty dang well.
Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle has players using the various girls in a fusion of long distance fighting and in your face melee. Players can utilize the circle, square and triangle buttons to unleash a fury of different powers and spells on their opponents. Players can also dash around on the ground and even in the air—depending on the girl chosen—to evade or launch attacks when the situation arises. Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle might be a simple game—which is a great thing because there really isn’t a tutorial to tell you how to play—but the simplicity also has a surprising amount of depth thanks to the metagame of having to figure out when to utilize range over trying to get in close for a melee onslaught. Seriously folks, you’ll quickly learn that Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle isn’t a game where you can just spam buttons and win on harder difficulties.
In terms of modes to play, Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle offers up several. Players can expect to find a story mode—which is over pretty fast—score attack, arcade, vs mode and online vs. Though for most, arcade and score attack will probably get the most use seeing as how we don’t know many who would want to play Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle with us and the online services were not available as of this review. This is usually the typical theme for most Touhou titles. However, for the low price of admission Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle gives players a nice bang for their hard-earned buck and we here at Honey’s Anime are sure fans will appreciate that.
Graphically, Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle is a mixed bag. While the art and girls of Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle look great outside of battle, when the actual battle begins don’t expect to see something that impressive. Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle follows the very simple traits of past titles which means characters are shrunken down to chibi form and the game overall looks like a title from ages ago. We here at Honey’s Anime have played our fair share of Touhou games—at least the ones released stateside—and while we’re use to this style of graphics, it still isn’t our favorite thing of Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle. Luckily, while the graphics aren’t great the music is stellar providing players will a slew of excellent tracks to listen to.
Honey's Gameplay Consensus:
- Fun gameplay
- Impressive Art and character design
- Great soundtrack
- Quirky story with laugh out loud banter
- Moe girls
- Graphics during gameplay are weak
- For a very niche fan base
- A tutorial mode would have been nice
