Uta no☆Prince-sama Maji LOVE Kingdom Introduction and Story
Many of us first got into Uta no Prince-sama either from the 2011 anime, Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 1000%, or the manga that was published between 2009 and 2012. Since then, the fandom has exploded with sequels and movies. The movie we’ll be reviewing today is the newest movie (and arguably the hottest), Uta no☆Prince-sama Maji LOVE Kingdom! Picking up after Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love Legend Star anime, ST☆RISH, QUARTET NIGHT, and HE☆VENS are coming together for a huge, spectacular concert.
This time, they’re shaking things up and mixing the three groups together to give their fans a unique and amazing performance full of their favorite UtaPri songs. After the previous anime season, the members share their feelings about how they worked hard to understand each other better and learned to work together to create some amazing songs. Of course, all of their hard work was to give their fans the most fantastic concert of their lives!
1. It’s Just Like a Live Concert.
If you’ve ever been to a Japanese concert, then you know that idols love to talk between songs. Uta no☆Prince-sama Maji LOVE Kingdom does the same thing with each character talking to the audience or talking amongst themselves about their journey putting on this show. The movie begins with all three groups being introduced and there’s a nice flow from one song to the next with a good variety of the types of songs they perform. It felt very much like a real concert we would’ve attended.
2. The Character Groups Are On Point.
One thing we were curious about was which characters were going to be singing together. With three different idol groups, we weren’t sure if they were going to place only similar vocalists together or mix up the ranges. Surprisingly, it was a little bit of both. It was especially nice to hear a more baritone or tenor voice harmonize with the alto ranges. Personality-wise, everyone stayed in character while also making casual jokes and at times being overly dramatic.
3. The Animation Is Amazing.
This is an anime movie and one point that really struck us was how smooth the animation was in spite of all the dancing and effects going on. The characters were clad in stylish clothing and the special effects were beautiful. Everything from the giant castle to the birdcage and the flying train at the end looked spectacular.
1. You’re Not a Fan of Anime Idols.
While voice actors are the voices behind anime idols, it’s still an anime and therefore some people might not like how cartoon-y the characters sound. The songs are geared more for anime and anime theme songs, so the type of music they sing may not be for everyone despite the famous vocalists singing them.
2. It’s Unrealistic.
It’s an anime, so of course it’s going to be a bit over the top and unrealistic at times. For example, when the group HE☆VENS is hoisted into the air on a platform, normally it would be far too dangerous for seven people to be dancing that high up, but in anime, it’s no problem at all. Apparently, flying hoverboards and trains are also possible. So while it’s incredibly unrealistic, it’s still really beautiful to watch.
3. The Movie Is Just a Concert.
While some may enjoy that the movie is basically a giant concert and lacks the usual anime drama, it can also work in the opposite direction. As the title doesn’t say that the entire movie is a concert, some people might be a bit let down by not seeing all the work and drama the characters had to go through to make the movie possible. Sure, the characters touch on it during the actual movie and some outtakes are shown after the concert ends, but it’s very different from actually watching the making of the concert.
Uta no☆Prince-sama Maji LOVE Kingdom is a movie that’s basically an entire concert featuring the handsome group ST☆RISH, the sexy group QUARTET NIGHT, and the gentlemanly group HE☆VENS. From the very beginning, we’re immediately sucked into the concert and feel like each idol is giving it their all for us specifically. The outfits look great, the vocalist choices for each mixed group song were on point, and the entire movie felt like a genuine concert, just in an anime form. Of course, it helps to know the Uta no☆Prince-sama fandom, so if you haven’t caught up yet on all the previous seasons, we highly recommend binge watching them before watching this movie as it’ll make the heartfelt comments feel all that much sweeter.
We hope you enjoy watching the movie! Check out the showtimes at the link above starting August 23, 2019!
