Now, in case you are indeed new the Maker games of yesteryear let us explain somethings. First, Visual Novel Maker isn’t what most would consider a video game. It does give players the means of playing a visual novel but it has to be either one they create or download. Lastly, if you have no idea how to edit—which don’t feel bad as that’s the case with some of us here at Honey’s Anime—then Visual Novel Maker will be a truly hard title to use. However, that doesn’t mean you can use Visual Novel Maker but be prepared for a lot of time in trial and error.
Alright, with that out of the way, let’s talk about “gameplay”. Visual Novel Maker again isn’t a game but it gives people the tools to make their own games. There are hundreds of things you can do in Visual Novel Maker such as edit scenes, transition between scenes, edit what characters say and how they react based on choices and the list goes on. To say Visual Novel Maker is overwhelming to the complete novice creator is an understatement. However, even here at Honey’s Anime we were able to make some scenes work as most of the harder work of coding is done by Visual Novel Maker’s own internal systems.
Graphically, Visual Novel Maker is impressive—if we’re considering in game assets—and provides a nice amount of detail in its pre-rendered materials. While there are quite a few characters, backgrounds and designs to use compared to RPG Maker, Visual Novel Maker doesn’t have nearly the same level of in game items to use. We presume that Visual Novel Maker really does want creators to use their own designs before just relying solely on theirs but still some more diversity in backgrounds to use would have been better. The same can be said of the in-game music which is bare minimum but pretty strong for what’s offered. Ultimately, be prepared to use your own art, music and voices—which is an option—if you want to really get the most out of Visual Novel Maker.
Lastly, we do wish Visual Novel Maker had a tutorial or even a basic one. While we understand most RPG Maker games—and maker games in general—don’t have a tutorial, that doesn’t make us wish for one any less. Visual Novel Maker isn’t made for those who want an easy drag and drop creation tool. Instead, Visual Novel Maker is for those who take game creating seriously or want to truly test their knowledge so they can craft a game of their own. That’s why if you fit into the latter group, Visual Novel Maker is clearly for you.
